Soon to RETIRE Coach Woodson Thread

I truly cannot understand how anyone can be pissed at Ballo last night. He played hard. He still misses way too many free throws, but that’s who he is.  People have been screaming at the guys all season and then when we do, we get mad at them, because they’re getting on a teammate for a terrible play. My biggest criticism all along has been why can’t everybody bring that fire every night?  If you’re going to get mad at Paula, that’s what you should be mad about not for yelling at Rice. I would have been yelling at him too.  There is a reason Rice didn’t play virtually the entire second half.

I agree!  Ballo showed some fire and it was directed at the correct guy.  Rice is a selfish player and took and ill-advised shot with the game on the line.  He had a hot Mgbako open in the corner, or at least drive it all the way to basket.

Other than those 20 turnovers that killed us, this was the best and hardest played game they have played all year.  I honestly that tonight we were the better team, personnel wise, but we weren’t better coached.  Too many miscues, especially down the stretch cost us this game and that comes down to coaching.

I still don't understand how an organization can have so many data points to make a decision to move on from someone but just doesn't do it. I don't think it would be too far-fetched for a large company to move on from a top executive or administrator on a project if they were showing signs of not producing or damaging the brand. I can't imagine that company waiting until the end of the project to let the person go. If it's moving in the wrong direction, why let it go downstream even more?

All true, but I will say, personnel wise, at least from athletic ability stand point, IU has been the better team in all but maybe 1 or 2 games this season. As basketball players( smarts, discipline, effort, attitude) they have not been and this falls wholly on the coaches.

That has always been the best scenario, but I doubt CMW's ego would ever agree to that as it would be a transparent firing and  that ego is much more important than any player or fanbase to the trigger man in that case.

That is exactly what gets in the way on all of this, his ego!  If he truly cared about IU and the basketball program, he would do the right thing, but Mike Woodson is about Mike Woodson!

I believe there was some discussion yesterday about NBA team executive salaries in relationship to Stevens’ potential personal pro/con list. Front Office Sports doesn’t cite its sources here but is generally reputable: https://frontofficesports.com/highest-paid-nba-general-managers/

Stevens’ salary isn’t listed but when this was updated in the fall, only 5 reported salaries exceeded Woody’s coaching salary.

A couple notes: 1. As mentioned, doesn’t cite sources, 2. Not every GM’s salary is listed, 3. Stevens is Boston’s president of basketball ops, technically, which might mean he’s closer to the top of the list, 4. Danny Ainge preceded Brad in that role and is listed at $3M in Utah; I wouldn’t be surprised if Danny took a haircut to be with the Jazz but did he take a 50% cut? Did Boston immediately pay Brad more than one of the best execs in bball when he had no front office experience? 5. As I think @Home Jersey mentioned yesterday, the money goes farther in So. IN than Boston, and finally, 6. If IU offered $70M over seven years in ‘21 they will almost surely be able to make this at least a lateral financial move once taxes, cost of living, etc. are factored in.

Look, I get the skepticism that IU can make it work. But the timing to leave Boston makes some sense for a variety of reasons. We don’t know the Stevens but the family arguments are weaker this time around, you’d think. The financial circumstances can probs may be roughly equivalent, based on what we can glean. And I also just really think that as good as he’s been as an exec, Brad Stevens wants to be a basketball coach. He’s not just going to take any job, but we can reasonably expect that Dolson will make a compelling case against this time.

Spot on!  The are the best team athletic ability wise that money can buy, but all those other things they lack in, bring them back to the pack and don’t forget about poor coaching, it definitely played a role in this

The point of moving on from that executive would be to put in placer a better option, as such there are none at IU. Other than satisfying the seething fan base there is no reason to fire CMW. I was for firing him earlier, just for fear he might eek out enough wins to be retained. That ship has all but sailed barring Jesus transferring in late season, and he may even struggle in Woodson's offense.

And realize the forces that led to retaining CMW last off season are still in place. Woodson's failure and Dolsons fb accomplishments have shifted the power balance, but with no real benefit to firing him this late into this failure of a season, it seems for Dolson to use up the political capital he has amassed to merely pants Woodson seems unwise.  Let Woodson lay in the bed he made and then fade into the annuls of IU failed coaching.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I provide this evidence: “Couldn’t get his attention, and about the time he got where he was going – I thought he got fouled on the play, but they didn’t make the call."

You're up one and Purdue calls timeout.  You set your defense in the huddle. Wouldn't you also be telling the team what we are going to do if they score?  The decision may be different based on the amount of time left, but it seems to me a good coach should be one or two plays ahead in their thinking.  The fact a timeout or no timeout wasn't discussed in the previous timeout is damning evidence against Woodson.

It like playing chess, you have to at be thinking 3 moves ahead, but Woodson isn’t even playing checkers, maybe marbles.

That again highlighted the dysfunction in coaching and control. For the guys still putting in effort, it's sad. That Rice, Carlyle,Reneau and Tucker have become near unplayable liabilities is mind blowingly bad coaching

Those 4 are big liabilities.  They are selfish players, that only care about themselves and their numbers.  Yes it comes down to coaching or lack there of

I have no problem with the players. They all seem like good teammates. Ballo standing up for his teammate when he got shoved ( forgot which game ) and the energy the others  try to bring is something I commend especially when they know the eventual outcome of their coach.  It’s too bad though, you can see the potential in this roster but just don’t have the proper coaching.

At least Woodson continues to leave no doubt about being a terrible coach. That whole last 2-3 sequences were all about who has the better head coach. I feel for the guys because most of them probably deserved to pull the game out. But alas…

You could have put the ball in about 3-4 different player’s hands and I wouldn’t have said a word. But Rice? Come on. I can’t be the only one thinking Woody didn’t use 1 of the timeouts left because he saw how using a timeout at the end of the Maryland game went.

The last two games were winnable for us, which basically came down to one possession to execute with a one point deficit but poor coaching again reared its ugly head!

I can understand your points, and they are all valid. However, I feel that by not moving on from him, every time he shows mediocrity and/or poor performance, and nothing about his future is addressed, it is communicating that it is acceptable. This is what I feel continues to damage the brand. When IU hires the next coach, it will be interesting if high expectations are talked about in the press conference....because right now, those high expectations are not being showing in the lack of communication with how this will end. I think they need to announce that he will be done at seasons end regardless of his feelings on it. If he doesn't like it and walks away before that, so be it....

The player doesn't need to call the timeout. What a ******* liar. Once again it's the player's fault, not his.

Just when I think I couldn't like him even less, he finds a way.

It was the Illinois game.

The potential in this team is why I would have liked to have seen them fire Woodson after the Illinois game but here we are talking about potential

Have to make the BTT first, could you imagine being left off that? Not making the NCAAs is one thing but miss the BTT and Woody may actually fire himself

I was with you until the "Woody may actually fire himself" part. He's made it apparent his ego is too big for that, regardless of outcome. Afterall, the failures aren't his failures, they're the players' failures.

What's the point of an in season firing at this point. This team is well outside the tourney bubble, there is no even moderately competent replacement on the bench, and there would be only a handful of games left after Wisc.
I expect IU shot their shot last night, that was the best effort you will see the remainder of the season, maybe they show up for IU/OU part 2, the rest of the games that they are expected to lose in they will give meager efforts, folding early and often.
My selfish satisfaction and more time to find the right guy. Maybe calm the fanbase down some
