People say that because it makes intuitive sense to us normies who value things like job security. But has a program really ever been harmed by firing people too quickly?  
 

Coaching at this level, by its nature, attracts people with self confidence and low preference for things like job security. 
 

If anything, I could see it affecting contract negotiations more than the actual attraction of talent.  
 

What’s the opportunity cost of keeping coaches too long and running your program into the gutter?

Wonder how everything would have played out had Archie been fired under President Whitten's administration and not under a president that didn't know the difference between a basketball and a cucumber.

Also wonder what the dynamics are between President Whitten and the BOT regarding athletics in particular.

But at least we have Armond Hill, Woody's right hand man, who was 2-25 and 0-14 in conference play as a HC at Columbia.

Him too and Wittman who was a .400 nba coach.

Woodson was obviously not qualified for this position and the red flags should’ve been apparent from the day he was hired.
 

Scott Dolson brings in Fife and Matta to “help” Woodson adjust to the college level, sounds like a dream come true with that experience. Woodson ends up running both those guys off after one season. Woodson hired within Archie’s staff, why? Maybe he knew them prior, I doubt it. But he knew no one that could come and help win the college game and instead hired his buddy Armond Hill, who is 70 years old. He consults with other former NBA scouts on gameplay and lets the assistants recruit. 
 

Shouldn’t have Woodson hired some elite recruiters? Promoting the former DOBO from Archie’s staff and keeping Kenya seems like a backwards @$$ move. New head coaches never retain former staff members, neither on the men nor women’s side. That was a major red flag from day one. 
 

Dolson put himself into this mess by hiring an unqualified coach who is stuck on the days when he was a former coach of the Atlanta Hawks. No NBA organizations hired him as a head coach after his stint with the Knicks, there’s a reason why I’m sure which explains why he spent almost a decade as an assistant coach.
 

This was a horrible hire. It’s not going to work out. He’ll get another year unfortunately but he’s not the guy for the job.

He's not getting another year if he doesn't correct this mess. Not sure why people keep trying to push that narrative. Things are bad and worse yet the games aren't entertaining. The people in charge will not risk having another year of this.

Hey I hope you’re right. I mean most of us thought Tom Allen would be here another year. 
 

But I don’t see Dolson having the balls to fire an Indiana guy after he just made the tournament two years in a row* 

 

If they lose out, which is possible, then I could see a world where Woodson is gone this spring.

I see where people say the administration wants to devalue the basketball program.

I see people saying the BOT runs everything and the president runs everything (Buckner)

My question is why would Buckner want to devalue the basketball program that he helped built. Yes he made a huge mistake of hiring Woodson but it wasn't due to him wanting to devalue basketball.

We have two home games in a week.  One v Northwestern who is going to need that win.  And Nebraska who has already kicked our butt and took IL to OT.  If we lose those two, does the chit hit the fan?

I asked that same question a day or two ago... my understanding is that Buckner controls the BOT who controls everything... that's how it was explained to me... but, like you, I cannot understand why Buckner would damage the basketball program which was his claim to fame, and the basis for who and what he is... it's puzzling...

Hasn't it already hit the fan? Every additional loss at this point is another nail in Woodson's coffin as IU coach...

Power/control/own legacy. I used to be in the athletics departments at Duke and UNC and now work as independent advisor to Duke and UNC. I get usually called when departments need issues that have to be addressed.  Power/control/ legacy are powerful reasons to harm a department you helped build. It's hard to let go of that and tough to accept that maybe your (in this case Buckner I guess) the reason the program is failing.

I suppose that I get that up to a point... but surely Buckner can see that the wheels are coming off... I mean, the rest of us can, how could he miss it? #enquiringminds
