In keeping with his strict criteria, Rico would like to enter Arkansas St HC Bryan Hodgson's name into the discussion....

Just so I follow we have to get a mid-major coach because we are a middle-of-the-pack Big Ten team or do we have to go that route because we aren't allowed to skip steps and get a big-time coach?

If a big-time coach will turn down doubling their salary because we aren't where were at as a program right now then we should probably take their name off the list.

IU can get whoever they want if they say yes.    You don’t see many teams that have been down 30 years get the white whale.   Plenty of big time coaches will say yes however you don’t see the Stevens, Donavans coming in on a white horse to save a program

IU still plays in the B1G conference.  That alone will get coaches outside the SEC and B1G wanting a chance at a step up.   IU has lots of positives that should bring in a really good coach.   I’m worried about a lot of things but IU getting a coach that can turn this thing around isn’t one of them if the AD is allowed to go his job

From an optics point of view yeah probably however IU as  a program is a middle of the pack B1G team. Not many middle of the pack programs for 30 years plus gets a white whale.   IU might have to grind a little bit before jumping into the top of the sport.  Can’t skip steps and if the steps are lower coaches that what people want then that’s where the IU program is

Not many middle of the pack programs have 5 million dollars for roster construction and the largest recruiting budget in their conference.

OK I get what your saying. And that makes total sense. I just feel like this time you can't be cheap, you have to throw a ton of money at whoever you think can do the job. Your losing fans already, and it's going to take a big hit to get some back.

Winning will bring in the fans, no matter the coach.

IU is kind of running out of runway with some fans though, I think. I can kind of feel it with the group of people that I text and talk to regularly. So rolling the dice on another up and comer and it coming up snake eyes again is risky.

Whoever the coach is the bar is so low from what fans have expected the last 8 years it wouldn’t take much to gain those fans back.   Make it to the second weekend in your first couple years and he would give IU fans something they haven’t experienced in a while.   Crazy the lack of tourney success this program has had

Replace "have to" with "might" and you've hit the nail on the head.

To illustrate just how bad it's gotten, I think I can sum up IU's current status using only three words:

  1. Vanderbilt
  2. Is
  3. Better

And they’ve got their HC in place. Funny how that works.

Guys IU is a top 5 job in the current landscape. That’s just reality. There will be lots of interest.

Not anywhere close.

Kentucky is an actual top 5 job and just got Mark Pope after being turned down by the some of the biggest names in college basketball.

Yes I agree that we are still a big time job, whether it's top 5 or top something. So AH is right - UK got turned down by all the white whales with a top 5 job and while it's probably inaccurate when he says we're "not anywhere close" the point remains that white whales tend to already be where they want to be.

Yep. I kinda poke at the younger fans for their more favorable opinion on Crean. But I can’t really blame them. I don’t know what any fans under 40 would even expect out of this program. Fans under 30 haven’t seen us do a thing unless they remember Davis’s one run when they were a little kid.

Even a B+ coach that put together something like  a S16 and E8 in his first four years would have the fans riled up.

Idk if it's Top 5, but it's certainly not lower than 10, and absolutely could be Top 5 quickly.

Maybe since you said it this time it won't fall on deaf ears. I doubt it though.

No man, we get it. We know you think IU is a mediocre job, you’ve made that abundantly clear.

Some of us aren’t ready to jump that shark. If we end up 5+ guys down the list, feel free to dance on the grave of IU basketball being an elite program. And you can laugh at all of us for daring to believe there is still something special about IU. You don’t believe the job is still special, I get it and even understand the view in some respects. I’ve been an IU fan for 25 years, I’ve seen more bad basketball than good. But I still believe the job is special.

I think a lot of people on here last year would have taken Mark Pope in a heartbeat. Fun style of play. The only negative I saw was he played at UK. So a top 5 program got a really good coach and their still a top 5 program. Hopefully we go that route this time
