Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Reading the tea leaves on here - I think he just made a comment about who IU's #1 target would be IF they were to fire Woodson.

And that person currently coaches at Auburn.

Hit send to quick.  Were we ok with his personal issues since he was winning!  Isn't that the same thing.

Knight was a stickler for playing by the NCAA rules.  Knight suspended Alford for the Kentucky game because Alford took part in charity calendar in violation of NCAA rules. It was always reported that Knight had "issues" with anger and outbursts.  There were a few instances where it was said that he physically assaulted people.  I think it was reported that he threw an opposing fan into a trash can and there was an issue with a security guard in Puerto Rico.  He could also be demanding of his players, but nothing as bad as a recruit would go through at boot camp. No social media then, so you had to rely on what you heard.  Most of his players spoke highly of him.  But ultimately, we wanted to believe the good over the bad because he was a winner.

I'd put it more like:

  • 1 Final Four (lost by 1pt on a controversial ending)
  • 1 Elite 8 (lost by 1pt)
  • 4 Sweet 16s (another 1pt loss, and took a mid major 12 seed)
  • Division 2 National Championship
  • It's his dream job

Young Brucie would take us on one helluva ride for 8-10 years.

Great points. I will also say-- I think it was the E8 or the FF4 loss.... they were CLEARLY the best team left/playing the best and their 1st or 2nd best player blew his knee out. It's very, very possible AU wins a title that year. Can't remember the year though.

Bruce Pearl would be an absolute grand slam hire and anyone saying otherwise is lying to themselves.

Hes my #1. Get Pearl and we’ll all be happy with the results on the court

To be clear-- respectfully-- no he wasn't, by any means, always inside the rules.

I think JF87 hit the nail on the head.  We only got what was told in stories back then.  Ultimately, we wanted to believe he was all good but winning has a way of doing that.

Sampson is one of the best basketball coaches in the entire country. I'm guessing you & others just don't like how he wins. I wish he would have stayed at IU, kicked a few guys off the team, and hung a few more banners. He probably would have by now, truth be told, but not at our prideful school!

Serious question - What exactly do you and half of the IU fanbase want? You want to win with no risk and no sacrifice. Good luck with that. It's like this vision of an acolyte on the sidelines of Assembly Hall, petting puppies and winning basketball championships all while wearing candy stripes. I think we have this vision of our "squeaky clean" program, and it's actually a huge detriment to our success. The NCAA does NOT care about our pride. They don't give a flying ***k. There's a path to winning, and we're not on it. It doesn't mean IU has to be dirty, but good lord we all need to get over this concept.

The NCAA knows: Bill Self breaks all the rules. Tom Izzo...don't even get me started. John Calipari...gross. Kelvin Samson, you over-texting jerk! Mike Schzzlakizkzizaouinveoinveski - super dirty. UNC, super dirty and cheaters on record. Sean Miller, dirty. The list goes on and on and on. All of them got away with it and still get away with it. They know the system. I am not saying I agree with it, but the NCAA makes money on high-profile, winning teams. And with that, they allow certain things.

Guess who is the envy of IU basketball? All of those programs and their continued success. They have what we want. When Knight was here, we all overlooked many of his glaring flaws because we won. We were winners. We hung banners.

We need to look in the mirror and leave the self-righteous stuff behind. We need to get out of our own way.

Sampson is a fantastic coach.  No doubt about it.  If I was running a pro team and winning is all that matters, I would hire Sampson.  However, IU is an academic institution first and foremost. IU should have standards required by the coaches beyond simply winning.  I care more about the university than just the basketball team.  I want to win but win the right way.

It's just really hard to call someone that was willing to choke a player--- "some who was a stickler for the rules."

He won big here and you guys overlooked his deficiencies as a result. Which is fine, but call it what it is.

I've already admitted I would have GLADLY done that for Bill Self the last 25 years.

Knight would tell players where to go in town to get free food, and free gas, work done on their cars for no cost, and where to find cheap housing. Where to get summer jobs that paid more money to players than regular workers. He got players' families jobs at Cook and other places. Did they go to class? Yes Did they graduate? Yes But he had ways around rules just like everyone else.

I can remember listing to the senior night speeches and several of the guys mentioned free food and haircuts back then but never thought anything of it.

IU is a money-hungry entity that operates in our state, but I don't think operates FOR our state.

Just win.

Knight was put on zero tolerance when that was revealed.  Not sure I would call that being overlooked.

Great point. Are you ok winning the right way if it's the way Duke does it? Break all the rules with a 4.0 GPA while the NCAA looks teh other way?

Every single one of them thanked Newt Chitwood. He owned a gas station and garage. No player ever had to pay for anything there
