Fire Coach Woodson Thread

His style of play isn’t going to bring in top end talent? What? Now we are just making things up.

IMO no it won't. 2.5 years of play and taking the most long 2's, dumping it in and playing through the 4/5 is a negative for top end guards. If I'm wrong, why does 2024 2025 recruiting back up my point. Where's the top guards? I will say I could've worded it better, Woodson and IU do get top end PF/C. I meant guards exclusively.

Then you don’t know this fanbase. Not even a question how they would react. that pressure would be massive. You already had one reply above say. 1 bad year, year 2 tourney, never look back of get out
I would be fine with that but 90% of the fans would not be. They would be losing it after every game, tweeting at players, the staff, etc. saying it was a fluke. Who loses to Bryant? That isn’t IU level of good. Mid major coach showing his true colors.

Most of us would agree to hire Elmo if we got back to the final four and then had a few less successful but still tourney years. We all desperately want to reset our relevance clock however possible, give me a final four and early tourney flameouts for the next THREE years and I will laugh all the way to homefield apparel as I buy more Final Four memorabilia. I think you are the one misreading the room lol

If it takes him 4 years, yes, he'd be chastised. Teams can literally bring in 8-10 news guys a year now and if that doesn't work year 1, teams can do it all again year 3. I believe if May, who I sincerely hope is hired in the next 60 days, had a lackluster first year the minimum expectation for year 2 is the tournament and every year beyond that is competing nationally. It just comes with the job, if coaches don't want expectations and fan pressure, they should go to a place that doesn't value and have history of being successful - it's a part of the IU job just as it is w/ UK, Louisville, Duke, UNC, Kansas. IU will provide a coach w/ top notch facilities, astronomical pay, NIL funds that are hard to match, and brand recognition. IU and fans make a coaches life easy to recruit and vehemently support a winner. Win or be replaced.

"It's Indiana, It's Indiana"

If he doesn't want pressure then he doesn't want to go to places like UK etc. If they had our last 20 years it'd make us look mild.

Once again anything is possible but I'm not sure Woodson would be willing to go for it. Keady-painter already had a relationship.

I would love it.

That way Woody could sleep in every morning before having a cup of coffee at noon to decide what he is going to do for the day…:maybe contact the rest of his staff to see who is up for a round of golf.

And no one is saying down years can't or don't happen, just that down years at IU should still be a tournament appearance; that was even stated in that video posted a few pages back.

Down years at IU should look like Woody’s past two seasons. For all the talk about him snapping the long streak missing the tournament, Archie would’ve made it in 2020 sans a once in a century global pandemic. So, it was a long streak in name only.

The appetite for rebuilding is almost nonexistent for IU fans. We sat through the first three Crean years. We sat through four years of Archie. We’ve sat through three years of Woody. People are tired of it. That’s why IU better hire a proven winner with this next hire. The fanbase isn’t interested in another 3-4 year rebuild. It seems like we’ve been rebuilding for 15 years with a few good years sprinkled in.

Fans are going to Fan no matter what fan base you are talking about.   When the team is winning it’s fine when the team is losing they are going to be upset.   It is what it is.   Some fans just have more noise.  College basketball fans would know that bad games happen.   It’s why the sport is the best on the planet.   I can watch Chicago St at Northwestern and think no chance northwestern loses and all of a sudden with 5 min to go in watching an actual ball game where northwestern could lose.   Fans just expressing noise over losses like that is just that noise.   Even the best IU coach ever lost games like these.  Before junk  social media but still.   I can only imagine a message board in 86-88.    Lose to Cleveland St in 86 and the place is probably burning down but follow that up with a National Title run and the place is rainbows and sunshine but follow that up with a lose to Richmond in the first round the next year and the place is on fire.     lol.

regardless of the next coach the fan base is always going to loud and produce a bunch of noise

I noticed after the Purdue game he mentioned X injury several times and that were very young a few times. He did say we're so young we're still trying to get to know each other.

Is he held accountable in any way for anything he says? Winning coaches don't say things like this in February.

You’re right, if they lose to Memphis we likely aren’t having this conversation. On the flip side, if the FF game doesn’t end in similar fashion, he coaches for a National Championship. They still beat some really solid teams along the way. And I’d imagine if you remove the biggest accomplishment from each candidate’s resume, many will be less appealing and some would no longer be considered. And the Johnell Davis thing seems like quite a feather in May’s cap, no? Every single high major missed on this kid, he develops into an all-American under May and comes back to play another year for him at FAU when he could have hit the portal and had his pick among the who’s who of college basketball.

Not to mention that (1) he is an Indiana kid from a region (the region) where IU has historically lost recruits to Purdue, Michigan, and MSU (2) If we hired May this off-season, Johnell would be IU's starting guard next season.

I'm just speculating--I'm not advocating.

@Chris007 - Do you think Dolson would try to work a coach-in-waiting situation for May? Kind of like a one year deal that smooths the transition? Gives Woodson one more season to get thngs back on track but also secures the future. (Again, in Dolson's mind.) Similar to the Keady, Painter situation? Obviously, Painter had just one year at SIU and then made the jump. May is much more advanced in his career. Curious to get your thoughts. Is this something you think Dolson would pursue? Isbit something either coach would be amenable to?

Dolson would be open to it. Woody probably wouldn't. You'd be more likely to get Woody to accept the head of basketball operations gig.

Coaching search by year and candidates mentioned on the board:

2000 - Mike Davis?

2006 - John Beilin, Rick Pitino, Kelvin Sampson

2008 - Tom Crean?

2017 - Archie Miller, Chris Holtmann, Chris Mack

2021 - Chris Beard, Eric Musselman, Nate Oates, Brad Stevens, Woodson

2023 - John Shertz, Dusty May, Micah Schrewsberry

____________________________________

Interesting that our pick in 2006 no matter who would have been solid.

Interesting that a lot of experts said out of the 3 realistic candidates in 2017 Archie was the worst fit of the bunch, with a lot saying Mack would be the best fit at IU given his relationship with the media. Yet all 3 ended up flaming out.

Interesting that out of the coaching candidates in 2021, Beard is still by far the best one, with Oates being second

From a macro level, it seems that IU's issue is we didn't make a move in 2011 to grab Stevens from Butler... And ironically, we find our selves in the same predicament today... Both coaches in 3rd season, do we retain for a fourth? Dusty May coming off a FF, potentially could go back? If we don't make a bold move, I'm afraid history will repeat itself. I can live with taking a chance on May... I can't live with taking a chance on woodson for year 4...

If you add Drew, Beard, and Pearl to this year - I think it's the deepest pool we've had to choose from.

2006 - JB had a verbal agreement and staff picked out to coach IU. Then the president stepped in and said they wanted a minority instead which led to Sampson.

This ain’t as hard as fans make it.

They do not have the guards to do it. That is it. That simple. There is plenty opportunities to shoot. They choose not to shoot them.  Like Cupps the other night. Terrible. Wide open to shoot a crap shot. To that you say, bench him then, he did. Not a ton of options.

There are opportunities to play out of the post, Malik doesn’t trust the guards and rightfully so, his PPP efficiency is higher. This “system” would look way different with 2 quality guards.

I am all for saying he needs to own that. However, very good chance the next guy has some bad years too and makes some mistakes.

Yeah, yeah, beating a dead horse with my thoughts. I know. Not like every other post here isn’t saying the same thing over and over.

We haven't landed a commit from a guard in 27 months.

Woody yells at players for taking 3's at times, but then doesn't care how many long 2's they take. The reason they are hesitant to take them is because they are afraid of making Woody mad. When you are hesitant to shoot, it makes you a worse shooter.

Especially if they didn't mention the reason for the absence.  Did they?

And if we hired a 63 year old with no college experience for the kind of long rebuild some are mentioning, then we've got issues beyond the basketball program.

The absence of information leaves so many possibilities:

  • Out recruiting
  • Has the flu
  • Team/player/staff needs attention
  • Family emergency
  • Special guest in town

and so many, many other possibilities.

So absent information, the best conclusion is "no information so nothing to take from it."

Rabby mentioned he was told it was because Woody had other obligations on his schedule.

So yeah..

Unfortunately it would be a real easy notification.  Fischer just says "Mike is sick;"  "Mike is taking time to see his grandkids;"  Mike is recruiting;" Etc.  Nobody would care.  No announcement leaves a lot of speculation.

I would argue he is barely hanging on this year. If he went to a final four at IU and then returned that roster, only to turn around and lose to all the teams he has this year, yeah, he would be in hot water. I also fully expect them to flame out early in the tourney this year. Then what will guys say? Give him a pass?

FAU has 1 quad 4 loss and 1 quad 3 loss this year.  The quad 4 loss is bad.  So, Dusty doesn't walk on water.  However, FAU moved to a better conference this year and are currently 4-3 on the road.  FAU is 6-1 in neutral site games.  They are also 3-1 in quad 1 games. That's a solid record, especially for a team that has moved from being the hunter, to being the hunted.  The Final Four run was magical last year and will most likely not be duplicated.  Losing earlier in the NCAA Tournament would not diminish what FAU or Dusty May have accomplished. Teams playing the 8-9 games or 7-10 games are typically a coin flip.  You know this.  That's why you are trying to set a higher bar.
