Fire Coach Woodson Thread

So Cronin or TJ Otz, I guess.

TJ Otzelberger is intriguing.  Currently, Iowa State is 3rd in adjusted defense and 45th in adjusted offense.  I think Cronin is a good coach.  He recruits length and his teams play good defense.  This year with a young team they are currently ranked 28th in adjusted defense. UCLA's adjusted offense is 175th. Not good.  In comparison, IU's adjusted offense is 108th.

I'm intrigued by Otz as well, but admittedly have not watched enough ISU to have a strong opinion. I'm concerned we would have to put the "must shoot more 3's" contingent of the fanbase on suicide watch though. His teams are marginally better scoring from 3 than IU has been the last 3 years and currently trending downwards (296th in 3's as % of points this year).

I didn't realize that. I thought it was a carryover from last season. Wow, only 9 days. everyone gives themselves a pat on the back.

The only problem with him is he looks like a body builder and his polo shirt looks like two sizes to little

Thoughts on the following coach?

-Only coached at a mid-major..

-Coached 6 seasons, never made NCAA tourney

-Losing record in year 6

Don't like him? Well he is RMK right before we hired him at age 31..

Now compare what May has done...

-Became FAU's all-time wins leader in 5 years

-Most wins in school history last season (35 wins) (1992 was IU's last 30 win season)

-Year 4 got FAU to its highest ever KenPom rating

-Year 5 took them to final 4

-Moved up a conference and has been #1 / #2 this season

- 52-8 record over the last 2 seasons

- Bob Knight said he was the only manager he ever had to yell at for taking too many notes on things he would say during practice

-Has won a conference coach of the year and a national coach of the year award

- Most conference wins in a single season (18) for C-USA

- Has coached under Mike White, RMK, and Mike Davis

- While some might say it took him 4 years to really get there.. in year 1 he took FAU to their first winning record in 8 seasons and was a finalist for the Joe Hall award which is given to the best first year D1 coach. Year 2 was another winning record, set the school record for points per game. Year 3 first time in school history for 3 winning seasons in a row.

Every fan should have to read the following article before deciding that they don't want Dusty. I am not saying he is a 100% guarantee, but I think if FAU makes a run in the tourney then the fanbase is going to get really loud.

I tried to read the article, but a paywall popped up. I’m open to being convinced!

IU hired a mid major coach who happened to become literally one of the two or three best coaches in modern college basketball history. It was a stroke of luck, honestly.

Anyway, Bob Knight coached at Army when college basketball was entirely different. 22 teams made the tournament his first year, and they were only up to 25 in his last season. He won 67% of his games and had fourth place, fourth place, and third place finishes in the NIT back when it meant something. Dusty May has had two good seasons. The other four were all very mediocre. I don’t want IU to take the risk at a time where we really aren’t in a position to take such a risk.

Curious, what type of run this post-season, if any, would it take for you to be on the May Train?

I think they should be considered better than mediocre. FAU has had no success and those were really solid years. He's won 64% of his games at FAU in 6 years, the 6 years prior to him they'd won 34%.

You do realize that Bob Knight was 11-13 his last year at Army.  IU wanted a coach whose teams played good defense and with discipline so they hired Bob Knight.  You should hire for fit, not always the record.  Dusty (like Shertz) has built a program from the ground up.  Archie was not a good fit for IU.  He was never comfortable at IU.  Don't pass on a mid-major coach because Archie was a bad fit.

They are the biggest homers and they have to be to get the access that they do. If Woodson committed Murder HH would defend him to the end of time.

I think you are a little low for the NBA assistant range. They start in 6 figures from what I read and that was an article from 2019. Money is not an issue with Woodson. He has homes in NY, LA, ATL, and here in Bloomington. He's owned a few apartment buildings here in town since the mid 80's.

Depends what organization. The staffs are growing each year now, most assistants are indeed 100K+. Support staff range from 50K-100K+. But titles are also changing so it depends how you define who are assistants and who are assistant assistants.

Archie was also VERY qualified.
