I get your point but there’s plenty of successful coaches that were never play callers. Here’s a few.

College Coaches

Urban Meyer

Jim Harbaugh

Jim Tressel

Dabo Swinney

Pat Fitzgerald

PJ Fleck

Kirk Ferentz

NFL Coaches

Zac Taylor

Nick Sirianni

John Harbaugh. The "need" for having been a playcaller is dumb.

Starting today would be a good time to track flights. Not just arrivals but also departures. Speaking to you @Trish

I may have some time this afternoon to check some things out. It doesn’t help I’m in a different time zone these days ;)

It's not a requirement, but it certainly helps, especially when you've never been tasked with evaluating and subsequently hiring a support staff, something Hart nor Frye have ever done either.

sure that makes sense but did Dolson make a comment about having this done this weekend or is this just a logical time to try and get it done.  The right guy seems more important than the right time to me - hopefully we can do both

I know a few of the journalists have alluded to this being done by the weekend. I don't get the sense that they're guessing on that, but it could just be them looking at the logical timeline, I'm not sure.

An associate HC didn't help hire support staff? Like what do you think these coaches do? I truly don't understand what advantages people think a coordinator has over someone like Mike Hart.

You have no clue what Hart and Frye have and haven't done behind closed doors.

Don't disagree, but I'd prefer my head football coach have some semblance of prior play-calling duties before taking a head coaching job for the first time, among many other things.

Siriani went to the Eagles after being OC for the Colts. Siriani never called plays for the Colts. Just like the Colts hired Reich who never called plays as a OC

Play caller isn't as important as sign stealer. Get that one right and everything else falls into place. :)

Sign stealing coordinator and get back coach are the two most important positions in football.

We shouldn’t be hiring a coordinator either. This isn’t a job where you learn on the fly, but I get it though, you’re going to call whoever Dolson hires a home run and say he deserves a raise.

"we shouldn't be hiring a coordinator" my god, talk about just limiting yourself right off the bat, for no reason at all. I truly try to stay away from personal comments, I know that is your M.O., but it is fairly obvious you have never hired anyone. You don't cut out 85% of the field for no reason.

Galen Clavio of Crimsoncast made a great point of this topic. We all know this is the hardest job in FBS, and we need to treat it as such. This is not a job you need to be learning on the fly. Our best coaches and at other programs like ours, have all had HC experience elsewhere before taking the job here. It needs to be a head coach, period.

Lol, I used to hire people all the time at various levels. I would never interview a stock boy for an executive sales position, but that’s just me.

Random note, if you ever head to Civilian Brewery in Spencer I think their Moz Sticks are the best I have ever had.

I live in Ellettsville and was always told if you cross the river into Spencer it will make you dumber but I will go check this out because of my love of Moz sticks

I will say this on the matter. The last two hires were coordinators and they didn't work out. Maybe try the head coach route. My two favorite IU FB coaches were Mallory and Hep both former HC's

We used to live in Elletsville too. Drove through the other day and was surprised how the traffic through town had changed. Agree with you on Spencer but we did win a macker 3v3 tournament there once so it isn’t all bad.

Not even close to the same thing lol

Hiring a position coach with ZERO prior head coaching experience, ZERO prior play-calling experience, ZERO experience hiring an entire support staff at a school like Indiana is a recipe for disaster. We will be sitting here 3 years from now doing it all over again if that’s your thing.

Right, that's your opinion. That is great Galen Clavio said that I have absolutely no clue who he is or what Crimsoncast is.
