Someone who lives in Bloomington and has  the time . Should go submit a foia request on the body cam footage . Prob have it back within 21 days should be on about page 75 then .

Don't necessarily think you have to live in Bloomington to make a FOIA request.

I was referring  to someone close to Bloomington .Your correct you can submit a foia anywhere in the country .

Is there a charge for it? I was looking at the police website and it said they could charge up to $150 for it. Plus here in Bloomington, you have to print off the form, take it to the police station, and pay for it. You have to know the police car #, the officer's name and someone else who was there

I'm sure Bloomington makes it difficult and expensive . I thought it was 15 bucks where I'm from for handling time . But that was quite awhile back .

I was told it was MCSD, not BPD because BPD was helping IUPD with looking for an armed robbery suspect loose on campus.

My understanding was he did finally leave but moved to another spot in a lot close by because he was waiting for his dad to get there.

Hopefully, we will see the camera footage and hear from someone from the basketball team soon.

Wait wait wait, so if all of one eye Willy and his mates were trapped and killed, how did the story or this map get out?

in all seriousness, if they asked him to leave on numerous occasions, why did he come back and park and wait for his dad to come? He could have left, period. He could have driven to his dad as he was being told to leave. Not sure I understand how this makes sense.

I've been questioning some aspects, but let me state this in strong favor of the officers:

If it's true that he wouldn't get out of the car because he wanted his dad to arrive, there would be no way for the officers to know if that was BS or not, and they shouldn't wait to find out. Can you imagine a standard where officers confronted with a suspect in a locked vehicle were required to wait because the suspect wanted to have his purported dad there? Yikes!

Now, the devil is in the details. How the officers and Mgbako interacted and what warnings they gave before breaking the window is relevant.

So, as I said, body cameras are the best way to know what happened.

Don't mean to take this thread off the rails into a discussion of appropriate policing etc., but man there are so many incidents of police over-escalation, violence, etc. and this is an 18 year old kid.

I hear you on the officers not being hamstrung by someone who says he needs to call someone -- but honestly,

1) how often does this even happen (almost never), and

2) police often don't have their body cams active (in at least many states there is no legal requirement for body cams as far as I know), and

3) this is an 18 year old sitting in a car at a Taco Bell, how dangerous is that?, and

4) imagine just what this completely non-violent incident could have turned into when they broke his glass and pulled him out of the car?? This could have turned into a horrible incident, it was entirely unnecessary. Really, really glad his arrest and release is all we're talking about.

Sigh. It's indiana. I should have expected things to go off the rails before it even started. Probably wouldn't have been in trouble at duke, Kansas, or Kentucky. Woodson needs to get a handle on the police down there

To #3.....it could potentially be very dangerous. Remember police don't know the intentions of individuals. They also don't have the privilege to hindsight like we do right now. Police, at the end of the day, just want to go home after work like everyone else. So when you have a person not cooperating and then locking themselves inside of a car where you can't clearly see their hands you're probably doing whatever you need to do to enhance your chance of going home alive. Like I said I've heard stories that really opened my eyes to their perspective.

Points 3 and 4 - couldn't agree more. My thing is... pretty sure you can simply issue someone a misdemeanor as a ticket/citation without booking them in (speaking from personal experience in Bloomington). They could've mailed the darn thing if they didn't want to wait, presumably 15 more minutes for his father to show up (of course, the cops are not obligated to wait around, I get that...). But not like they didn't know who he is or where to find him...

Just depends what kind of cop you draw in any given situation. MCPD is not inclined to do an IU student any favors, generally speaking.

Don't mistake what I'm saying - Mackenzie 100% made a series of dumb decisions and this all could have been avoided. He was in the wrong and things escalated. At the same time, he did not need to have his window smashed in and to be dragged out of the car, cuffed up. Mug shot circulated. Both things can be true at the same time.

I'm probably going to abstain from this thread/part of the conversation after this post so we don't spiral way off topic.

I wonder if/when the punishment will be announced. Sucks his bone-headed behavior is likely going to cost the team the chance to get more reps under their belt playing together in the exhibitions.

I highly doubt that the punishment will be announced.  Woodson's MO isn't to publicly state what a punishment is.

Completely agree with #4, absent info to the contrary.

Where I live body cams are almost universally required. Not sure whether they are in Btown. If they are and were deactivated, the officers would get an automatic IA investigation around here.

And FWIW, this type of incident is exactly why body cameras are required by many law enforcement agencies. As I’ve said before, they are the best friend of professional law enforcement, and the enemy of law enforcement that isn’t the best.
