Long story short...it's not even over yet, and I feel for the kid. All these opinions about what he should or shouldn't do. It's just nonsense. It's his and his family's decision. It will have 0 impact on your life. Does it stink? Sure. But I have a feeling this year's results and "offensive schemes" will be different from the past 3 years. There are some people who would ***** if we went undefeated and won it all. Could have been worse...what if we were eliminated instead of Michigan?

UConn is attractive, especially to a 17 year old. Back to back national champs want me? like really bad? Who could possibly turn that opportunity down? Especially if its what HE and HIS FAMILY think is best. They might be right, might be wrong. It's part of making choices and seeing the results.

You mean it's not because Mike Woodson didn't show up at one of his sectional games....that can't be.

Haha no, that would be people who want the optics to fit their narrative. Someone wondered where he was because others were there, threw it out there, and people who wanted to, ran with it.

Well, it boils down to personalities and trust to win basketball games.  And recruiting messaging. And whatever Woody is doing in the high school ranks isn’t reverberating.

If he’s being too honest and trying to sell reserve spots to top level kids that might be the disconnect. And I like honesty so long as you end up fielding a team good enough to be near elite.  Gotta figure it out, wherever the disconnect is, and fix it.

Woodson's high school recruiting has been just fine. Back to back B10 FOY, Reneau poised for another big year after making a big freshman to sophomore leap, and by all accounts Tucker is going to be a stud. Had he been a little more aggressive in the portal last year trying to upgrade the backcourt we likely aren't having these discussions.

He’s gotten what, 4 high school commitments since November 2021? 3 of those 4 commitments were spring ‘throw money at the player’ recruitments.

The evidence is crystal clear that he is flat out terrible when it comes to long-term high school recruitments. I’m pretty sure Sisley is the only one of those he’s landed since Cupps committed in November 2021.

Let’s not forget Mgbako’s mother freakin initiated his IU recruitment. And Tucker basically fell into Woody’s lap after Ignite folded their operation. HS recruiting has hardly been “fine” … it’s been different strokes of luck (like Reneau flipping from UF after they fired their coach, he decided to follow his MVA PG JHS). The staff is building the track while the train is riding on it, always reactive and on the back foot.

The emphasis on long, drawn out recruitments is no longer a thing. Hurley recruited Mullins for what 3-4 months? The portal allows you to improve your roster every single offseason with proven players rather than relying on 18-10 year old freshman. I'm sorry this doesn't fit your narrative. Staff missed out on Fland and Queen last Fall and ended up with Rice and Ballo instead. Want to wager the latter outperforms the former? I'll let you know how they do as you said you weren't watching this year.

You’re real hung up on me saying I’m not watching this year. And considering you think Woodson’s high school recruiting has been “just fine”, I don’t think you’d be the most reliable source on the team’s performance this season.

Neglecting high school recruiting and bringing in 6-7 transfers every year simply isn’t a sustainable practice. But it does give Woodson a built in excuse each year, I.e., “we’re still getting to know each other.” You can’t have it both ways. Either Woodson put in a lot of effort into the Mullins recruitment and whiffed, or he didn’t because “long, drawn-out recruitments is no longer a thing.” Either way, it’s a bad look for Woodson.

Given how the roster is expected to shake out, I would expect 3-4 transfers with only two needing to make an immediate impact. But fear-monger some more, you don't even watch.

I can’t help but see that the HS elites see this and shun Woodson like the plague.

I wish we could move this convo to the FMW thread. I think IU with Woodson is just an appealing destination for talented players who, for whatever reason, find themselves without a home late in the cycle.

It’s got plenty of dough, national brand recognition (still, somehow, despite the last 30 years), a coach who… technically… has NBA credentials (and a very real NBA network to his credit), and usually plenty of playing time to offer since we struck out earlier in the cycle / prefer to wait and see what free agents are on the market in the offseason, then plan around who we can get. Not exactly a sustainable system. Probably sounds like a great plan to a lazy and arrogant coach who somehow believes he’s better at his profession than all the cats who have kicked his tail for 3 years.
