LOCATED! The Holy Grail of IUBB Photos

Recommended Posts

I thought the story was that he wasn't even at IU for a month, and left long before practice started. Not sure they did a lot of preseason stuff back then -- so I would guess it's unlikely any such photo exists.

He was in Assembly Hall running with Hoosier teammates for 23 days. Practice photo? Preseason arrival pictures? Gotta be something somewhere.

In Larry’s early days under Knight, the future Celtic scrimmaged against older players. Bird thought some of those Hoosier veterans mistreated him — Benson being the worst offender.

Checked IU’s photo database (unbelievable resource) and got this result.

This is why it’s the holy grail. Someone has a hard copy photo in an album. Somebody must.

Jim Wisman was his roommate at IU. He’d be the most likely person. I’ve heard Wisman interviewed about his experience with Bird. He said they got along but he was from an established, wealthy family and Bird was dirt poor, so they had little in common. You’d think Wisman had a camera.

Larry Bird was an Indiana University men’s basketball player for one month.

Does a genuine, not photoshopped picture of Larry Bird in a Hoosier uniform exist?

Years ago, was in French Lick at a sports bar which had Larry Bird memorabilia. Fantastic!

The owner, I understand, was a friend and neighbor of Larry Bird.  Bird stored tons of trophies etc. in his garage.  Owner allegedly asked if he could display them and did in his bar.  Might just ask the owner if you know him.  Has some old photo albums...apparently.  33 Brick Street Larry Bird Memorabilia | French Lick, IN

By far the best lead yet - thanks Dave! I reached out to the owner of Brick Street.

The search for the Holy Grail IU Basketball photo continues.

Being honest, Bird would've become Larry Legend wherever he went. Transcendent player.

Apologies to Tom Abernathy, but that 1976 team would have likely started:

  1. Quinn Buckner
  2. Bobby Wilkerson
  3. Scott May
  4. Larry Bird
  5. Kent Benson

unfathomable
