The Hulls - Leal comparison is apples and oranges.
Hulls was a lead guard, recruited as a tough point with a tight handle, great court vision. His shooting was a plus, but he was recruited to run point.

Leal’s a 2. Both were 3 to 4 stars, fwiw, Hulls was ranked higher both nationally and in state, though we’re talking difference between low 100’s and around 150.
Hulls was more ready than AL — and I like AL, absolutely has a spot on the team. It’ wasn’t just who else was on the team it was Hull’s floor vision, sure it took him some time to adjust like most HS - frosh points, but man that kid could could direct play.
AL has toughness, he moves the ball, and he is a strong shooter, i think his role will grow as he gets stronger, he wasn’t really ready physically imo, but he is a guy i see heloing the guys around him and he brings energy.

But do you agree a guy like Leal who is willing to work for it could easily improve that shot and be an asset? And he has more physical ability to develop and be serviceable defensively if you’re going to compare him to Roth.

He’s been here two years on teams begging for guard play. Not gonna get much better.

Hulls was a 2 guard on a team ranked #1 for a good part of the season.

I know that. Neither of those #s change that AL is a better all around player then Hulls... outside of Hulls incredible trait.

AL is 6-7in taller, longer, way more athletic. He has just as good basketball IQ, shocker with both playing under JR Holmes.... he rebounds better. Absolutely better defensively, holy cow.

I absolutely love Hulls, but don't allow his 3pt shooting to cloud your memory of the rest of his game.

Leal is a perfect 12-13 guy. Its honesty irrelevant, he isn't leaving.

You got the last sentence right. He isn’t leaving. Probably here 5 years.

Hulls was a 2, I agree. You are letting his 3pt shooting to cloud the rest of his game though. Hulls isn't D1 if he shoots 30%. AL still would be. Not that 30% should be any sort of a goal lol

Idk what to tell you man. Have you ever coached before? I'm not implying anything I'm asking.

Hey all—

A good discussion but please remember the topic.

If someone wants to start a player comparison thread? Go for it.

Thought we were in the roster protection thread. I think it would fit under there. Honest mistake on my part, I apologize

I agree that Leal has a role on the team.

I find it interesting that you didn't include ball handling nor passing in your all around player comparison. The bottom line is the trait Hulls had in spades is the exact trait this team needs which is probably the reason the comparison started (?). The all around player Leal is couldn't get him in the rotation with older players that really lacked all around games this past season. If he can become a sniper he'll find minutes on just about any college team.

Completely disagree.

Leal will continue to get better and improve because he’s a gym rat and he will put the work in.  He greatly improved from last season to this season.  Make no mistake, kid loves IU and loves being here but he sees himself as more than an end of the bench guy.  He wants playing time and I think he will earn it.

Anthony Leal is as sure a bet to not enter the transfer portal as Jordan Hulls would be to be the best 3pt shooter even with his eyes closed if he were on this team this season.  There you go back on topic. You're welcome.:farting_smiley:
