At this point in IU's season we all have opinions on how the Hoosiers are doing/playing.  I saw a post (not sure if it was here or HSN) where a poster stated that he hated Wisconsin, but was envious of their program.  I'm just curious to hear what teams/programs, if any, folks here wish IU could be more like in how they play the game of basketball.  I usually enjoy how Villanova plays because they normally shoot well along with having good ball handling skills.  They play what I see as smart basketball.  But I do agree with the guy who mentioned Wisconsin also.

Wiscy is what IU was for decades except IU had better starting talent. Culture wise - Villanova is definitely up there, Wiscy is up there, purdoodoo is up there, Texas Tech and Gonzaga too.

What I see with Villanova, Wiscy, purdoodoo, Texas Tech, and a few others is a consistency of hard work and development. They might not get the highest rated recruits but they put in the work on/off the court. They have systems that win and are less dirty than others.

I'm not concerned about "teams" that impress me, but rather the "style of ball" that a team plays in part, or whole.

I like Wisky's toughness, I love the hustle of Rutgers, I like the rebounding effort of MSU, I like seeing a team move the ball with pace. I don't see any of these traits consistently...with our current team.

I don't watch a lot of BBall outside of the B1G. A little KY, because they play so fast, but that's about it.

I agree with you regarding IU's lack of consistency.  For me, the answer is that we need a big upgrade in talent.  Woodson has done, in my opinion, about as good as can be expected from this group.  And I like who we are recruiting for the future.

I like who he's going after for the future as well. I just think if he'd use the bench as a motivator we might see some faster pace, and better ball movement. We got it in the NW game, but ran out of gas with 6 players.

Gallo doesn't know how to dial it down. He's "all ahead frantic" all the time. And I love that about him

Wisconsin - Fundamentals

Michigan St. - Teams are always mentally tough (hard out during tournaments)

Duke - Top talent (always)

Purdue - Player development (Painter does more with lesser talent)

'Nova - Ball movement and basketball IQ

UCLA - Plays with heart and passion

Now for the IU comparison (looking at next season):

  • We are going to love Galloway the next two years!
    • He will bring IQ, passion, and toughness.
  • JHS will bring IQ, top talent, and toughness
  • Xavier (if he returns) can harness his passion into IQ and toughness (Leadership!)
  • Bates will need to mature
    • I believe though he can bring high talent but needs to be mentally tough
  • Geronimo has to believe in himself that he can bring his talent to another level.  I think he could be the defensive player of the year in the next couple of years.
  • Lander has the basketball anatomy to be good.  He's still a year out.
  • Our front court will give me the most worries next year (Durr and Duncomb???)
  • We need to hit the portal big time for a versatile big.
  • Praying that Race and Trayce come back but very low probability.
  • I don't know enough about Kaleb Banks or Gunn.

A line up X/Lander, JHS/Stewart, Galloway/Bates, Geronimo/Banks, and Durr/Duncomb wouldn't be bad.

Indiana University Women's basketball!

  • Extraordinary toughness
  • Score the ball inside and out
  • Genuinely enjoy playing together
  • Incredibly smart
  • They defend from 1-5 and each sub is as good a defender as the starters
  • Play for the university
  • Win (well duh -- with all of the qualities above winning is a given).
  • A culture that is a gold standard

If Wisconsin is going to continue getting/developing players like Johnny Davis then sign me up to be like them.  Wisconsin teams are typically missing high-level athleticism and a guy who can take over a game and score like a pro, and they have that right now which makes them really dangerous.

They also have a style of play and toughness that travels and wins big games on the road in the Big Ten, which we know are at a premium.  I love Greg Gard’s quote after Wisconsin beat MSU on the road: “The court here is 94x50 just like it is in Madison.”  It’s no secret they occasionally have three whistles in Madison in addition to the playing surface space, but there is also a lot of truth to Gard’s statement and I like that mentality for playing in someone else's arena.

We.need.development.

Those players listed all bring nice attributes to the game, I'm happy we have them. Those first 5 players you listed need to become all around players not one tool players. Gallo needs the shot doctor. JHS needs to arrive in Btown to a team that is ready to show him what e and development look like while finding a shot. X needs to work on consistency. Bates needs an environment that will push him. Geronimo will be as good as Geronimo wants to be. It actually takes them putting in the e and e to do it. I'm sure we'll hear about it but actually seeing it will prove it.

IMO, I'll be amazed if EITHER Durr on Duncomb are back next year. But we need either a wide body 747 in the middle or 3 more 6'-8" guys like Race or Trayce that can shoot from outside.

I think Race is back, Trayce is a toss up.

I like the guards that are coming in to compliment Bates, Gallo, KL.
