If I'm Dolson I wouldn't even make the call this time.  He can pound sand.  I would kick the tires on Donovan once more.  After that it's a coin flip between Schertz and May unless the administration is willing to hire Pearl or Drew.  I'm guessing no on that.

I think I'd take Schertz over May but not overly excited about either one. I'd probably call TJ Otzelberger before them, winning 68% of his games at Iowa State.

Another name to add to the "up and comer" list is Paris Lamont.  Lamont Paris named South Carolina men’s basketball coach | WBTW.  Made some noise with Chattanooga and now has South Carolina ranked #15 with recent wins of UK and at Tennessee.  Midwest fella (OH), former assistant at Wisconsin.  If you are watching games this spring he might be one to keep an eye out for as another wildcard.

Which makes another point: May is natural because he's been to a Final Four and has strong IU ties. But there are many, many very successful coaches that fans in Indiana might not be as familiar with because they aren't featured in local media.

I'd be curious who @Uspshoosier thinks are the super-hot coaching prospects from out of IU's immediate region.

BTW, these are the ages of some of the names being bandied about ...

Dusty May -- 47

T.J. Otzelberger -- 46

Josh Schertz -- 48

Micah Shrewsberry -- 47

Didn't list Pearl and Beard because let's face it -- they aren't realistic options.

I only list these because I keep reading about these "young coaches." These guys aren't exactly young. Of course, they are to me. LOL. And compared with Woody, they are. When I think of a "young" coach, I think of someone in his mid- to upper-30s -- or of course, younger. That said, there's absolutely nothing wrong with hiring a guy in his upper 40s. Or even in his 50s. Or 60s. As long as he wins.

Just for reference, here are the ages of coaches when we hired them: Davis (40 -- when he got the "permanent" gig) Sampson (50), Crean (42), Miller (38), Woody (63).

(BTW, Detroit Mercy is 0-24 this season under Davis. Ouch!)

They were 11-21 last season. He did some serious portaling in the offseason. I think three starters are transfers.

I've heard he has let people know that he would be interested in Ohio St if that job opens. If they lose to us tonight, that job might be open tomorrow.

I'm surpised by this analysis.

Shrews is by far the least proven of the 3 that were mentioned: a losing record in 3 years at IU Southbend, barely above .500 in 2 years at PSU and currently has a 7-15 record at ND. That's a poor resume.

May has a better resume.

Schertz has an amazing resume.

I think they are all good, but I don't necessarily agree. Shrews' relative success at the worst B1G program was impressive to me.

It's probably not fair to hold this year at ND against Shrews, no one here is talking about Shertz's 11-20 first year at ISU (nor should they be). Shrews hasn't even gotten a year three yet, but in year two he got PSU their first All-American in 80 years and won a tourney game. Record can't always tell the full story, 10 months ago Shrews was the hottest name in coaching for a reason.

For the record I think all three of them would succeed at IU but I am most confident in Shrew's ability to succeed at the P5 level because he's done it.

But didn't Pat Chambers have them playing pretty well before being let go for saying some crazy things? Then Shrews just took over those guys.

Yeah Chambers is a good coach, too, though.

But-- pretty sure Shrews pulled in multiple transfers.

Chambers is a good coach too, he got screwed. Tbf though, PSU was 206th in minutes continuity in Shrews' first year. Lundy, Dread and Harrar were the man returners, but it's not like they kept the whole Lamar Stevens team together.

I'd rather keep Woody for a few more years.

So what happens if Mack and Malik stays and we get Newton back and add McNeely. If we make a splash in the portal with SOME shooters do we have the talent to get over the Hump (No Pun Intended) lol. I'm assuming Trey comes back as well?

Do we get Queen too?  If so, we'll have a talented squad that plays two posts and doesn't run anything for shooters.  Woodson can win with talent, he just doesn't maximize the talent.  We will underperform against good teams again.
