General Coach Candidate News

Very bad hire imo.  But he'll get a chance.  Definitely needs to win a lot in year 1 after we saw what Dusty, Pope, and Kelsey did or he'd be finished.

That’s going to be the case for any coach. DeVries at least can bring a roster stable enough to make the tournament at minimum next year. McCollum trying to mesh 11-12 new faces next year could be a disaster.

I also think it's worth noting that Goodman did his podcast (Goodman and Hummel) live stream on YouTube right after he sent the DeVries tweet and brushed right past the topic on the show. They were talking about WVU being snubbed from the tournament and he said something to the effect of "and DeVries could be on the move to Iowa or Indiana but we won't talk about that right now".

If he really had something, he'd want to talk about it for at least 5 minutes so they can pull the clip and post it separately on YouTube with an Indiana specific title "DeVries on his way to INDIANA????" for clicks.

Feels like just the next leverage play being pushed through Goodman.

I have a very strong inclination that Goodman knows something. He is the person who is pushing a “mystery candidate” and he has been very coy about discussing the Indiana job on his shows. I think he is aware there is something bigger going on but is not going to break it until it’s time.

Not to be conspiratorial but I actually wonder if he knows more about the “mystery candidate” he’s mentioned but is honoring a request for secrecy.

I think he'd only sit on it if he got assurances that he could be the one to break it.

And to get very conspiratorial, his relationship with Stevens would play into that.

Not convinced of this, but you could even make the case there was some sort of horse trade involved with his info/reporting at a couple different spots.

At the very least this speaks pretty highly of the ath dept staff’s ability to convince them to wait and see.

Wasn’t it noted earlier in the thread that it typically takes two business days from the players request for them to officially be in the portal? So we’d find out if anyone is hitting the portal tomorrow in all likelihood, unless they choose to announce it themselves sooner

I wouldn’t either. I think he was their immediate second right after Dusty bailed.

He also had a mid major resume equal to Devries and mcCollum combined.

Similarly, people keep forgetting Mark Pope was a P5 coach in one of the top 3 basketball conferences when Kentucky hired him. Kentucky pulls a P5 coach almost every cycle except the year they got Calipari. I’m not sure how far down their list they got, but they aim high.

Kentucky made a really good hire. Got an offensive coach that can get some excitement back to Kentucky. And more excitement than just "here is a freshman." Calipari was just a completely different hire. He was killing it in recruiting at Memphis in the CUSA. Pretty sure he had Wall and Cousins going there before taking the UK job.

Nope, just that we should get off our high horse before we turn our noses up at potentially beating out Iowa for a coach.

Or... others could have done research on DeVries and come up with their own conclusions. Why didn't he play more P5 teams in the regular season?

His record against P5 teams was 2-7 in his last 5 years.

B- hire, leadoff single

maybe that is the best we can do

This, or going from “hire Otz” to “he’s not a candidate” without getting anything on the record
