I don't think UCLA is going to voluntarily lower his buyout without pushback, no. But Cronin, via his agent and lawyer, has a legitimate case to sue UCLA because nothing in his current contract when he signed his extension says anything about UCLA switching conferences and flying 2000 miles and being on the road for a week at a time every other week. Rather than going to court, UCLA could ultimately agree to a reduced buyout.

This is ridiculous, unless the contract explicitly states the conference the team plays in to have any relationship to the rest of the terms outlined - which is incredibly unlikely. The university made a unilateral change in athletic conferences based its perception of perceived value and benefit. Almost certainly it didn’t  change the terms of his contract to coach the team. He can’t just say ‘well, let’s renegotiate my $4M annual and $15M buy out b/c the B1G is much more competitive and will require a lot more travel.  How about we just lower the buyout to $5M and call it even!’

There's written language in his contract that states bonuses for accomplishments and results in the PAC 12, a now defunct conference lol. So what, he's now no longer entitles to any bonuses because he's not coaching in the PAC 12? Cronin has absolutely every grounds to renegotiate his contract. And if UCLA doesn't want too....he has more than a leg to stand on and challenge it in court.

It likely has a separability clause

Iowa State AD also got a five year extension.  So Olt extended and the AD extended.....really doubt the AD is getting an extension and have his prize basketball coach slip away.

I hear you... but the buyout dropped from something over $18M to $4M ($2M if the AD leaves). Serious question: Can you tell me why that would happen?

If Brad Stevens was actually hired... I don't even know what this board would do.

... I don't think you should give legal advice based on this.

Based on what? That UCLA wouldn't agree to a reduced buyout in the event he'd take them to court to challenge the language in his contract that was presented to him when he signed it?

He would lose on summary judgment on a suit.

I'm sure UCLA would revise the bonus language if needed (it probably says "conference championship" and not "Pac 12") but there's no legal grounds for a suit.
