General Coach Candidate News

In a contract like that, I would speculate that it is because Michigan chose Dusty May.  Once a person has been selected and negotiation begins, that is the most advantageous time for the prospective hire.

That clause is in there probably because Dusty May insisted on it.  The only alternative would be if Michigan insisted on it and that does not make sense.

My thoughts are he's "only" paid 3.6milish/year ranking 12th in the conference which caused a low buyout.  Higher the salary the more they believe the more they want to hold on to.

Last thing we need is for another coach to come in and tell us we aren’t true fans…..

Jaybob, I love your posts, so my response is not meant to be combative… just an attempt to talk about a different topic.

Like many here I was turned off by the true fan comments. I think Woody has been horrible to the fanbase because he is insecure and has a big ego.

Cronin’s team yesterday led for 37 minutes and blew it at the end. Fans were booing the team as they were fighting through adversity rather than rallying around them to win… at home. Most coaches would be annoyed with that IMO. Obviously college is a completely different level than HS ball, but fans would probably not do that to a HS team for a few reasons. One of the big ones is the idea that you are “in community” with the players and staff who represent your HS team. Yes they are paid big in D1/P5, but the same concept exists in college - that this is a team you support because you’re in community with them.

A good leader knows how to build rapport with fans and get the best out of them. Pagoda made a great post about the coach having to be a coach for the fans too… Doesn’t seem Cronin has done that at UCLA, but my point is basically that fans are not above accountability either, as much as we call for it. Fans need to do our part and uphold their part of the pact with their program. That means cheering through good times and bad in the stadium.

I was okay with Woody being booed relentlessly because he earned it. Hopefully in the same situation as UCLA last night, with a new coach in their first season or two, IU fans wouldn’t be booing. If they were, I’d hope they’d be receptive to constructive criticism if the coach thinks it’s necessary for the health of the program. There are better ways to do it than Cronin yesterday but I don’t think it’s comparable to Woody’s behavior.

Apparently Bill Self isn’t either even if he had interest.  Some of our fans are nuts.

He’s 62 and his last two years are well below his historical standard, the chance he’s washed or retiring is wayyyyyyyyyy greater than the chance he’s gonna move to Bloomington and reestablish what he’s got at KU

Cronin is about to be the youngest active coach to 500 career wins but he’s not good enough for IU lmfao

Maybe he tanked the MIN game so he could be in the spotlight a little longer. He plays a better opponent in OSU Sunday so maybe he goes for it then, but still only on streaming networks, so maybe he waits until cable tv game against Purdue.

19 FFs for UCLA

5 FFs for Oklahoma

A large portion of UCLA's appearances are the direct results of Sam Gilbert's illegal NIL long before NIL was a thing. Wooden cheated and should have an asterisk next to every NCAA title he "won".

But I digress...

No, there are two buyouts, one if he leaves on his own, and one if they fire him. The school would still want the buyout if he leaves on his own to be as high as possible.

Woody traumatized so many IU fans with the “true fans” senior day comments a good portion of the fan base wants a coach who will “just do whatever it takes to win” and kiss fans butts even when it’s not warranted. Good luck finding a winner willing to do that. It’s like fans think they are the coach’s boss or something lol

You mean to say that Saint Cig might not be as kind or intuitively perfect if people started booing during a two game losing streak?

Yessir. That is flat out true.

So, if May walks into the UM president's office and take a big #2 on their desk, we could get him cheaper?  Could be a good plan if Dolson plays his cards right.

That's absolutely fine.

More impressed with taking UCLA to a final four or more impressed with taking Oklahoma? Or is it all the same to you?

I will be more impressed if anyone can come here and take IU back to the FF, LOL.

If Miller won, no one would give a crap about his “fit”. It’s laughable that a program as bad as ours has been that some are so focused on that. Let’s make winning our culture

“If Miller won” is the whole point.  He didn’t.  And there are good reasons why he didn’t even though he came from a winning culture.

Another issue was that the NCAA only had 16 spots, only included conference champions , and the teams were geographicalLy seeded. Many years they just needed to beat a Weber State to make the final four.

I was okay with Woody being booed relentlessly because he earned it. Hopefully in the same situation as UCLA last night, with a new coach in their first season or tow, IU fans wouldn’t be booing. If they were, I’d hope they’d be receptive to constructive criticism if the coach thinks it’s necessary for the health of the program. There are better ways to do it than Cronin yesterday but I don’t think it’s comparable to Woody’s behavior.

The first 3 years of Crean is a perfect example. The program was gutted, there was no NIL and we were largely playing scrubs and castoffs... but the fans understood that and appreciated the effort... the results weren't the true measure at that point...

I believe and hope that a new coach would get a bit of a honeymoon period, regardless of who it is.
