General Coach Candidate News

****, my dog is too.  No reason to talk about my dog though.

I still think we're focusing on the wrong things in this search.  Find the best candidate regardless of Midwest ties.  And eliminate Cronin

I don’t care about his Midwest ties, look at his coaching record.

I’m not saying he should be our top candidate, or even top 3, but we’d be silly to not be happy with him as our coach if he can replicate what he’s done at UCLA.

Please just throw a massive bag at Dusty:

proven winner and program builder

grinder who loves the game and the hustle
loves IU and is a a coach knight product

plays modern, fun basketball

openly gushes about IU and has had the opportunity to remove himself from the discussion and did not

Unless he no longer has interest in the job, I agree, I know we can pay him more than Michigan, but I have no idea how the big money boosters feel about him?

They really wanted Woody to prove himself this year so they could jam it in our faces. However he failed again, as most True fans projected. So now it’s Adam Howard, Clif Marshall, Hoosier Hysterics, Rabjohns, and the fans fault.

I don't think its some conspiracy of those for Woodson wanted to stick it to anyone.  It was noticing last years roster had its deficiencies at guard, give him the ability to bring in talent so they're not canning an IU legend without giving him talent and a legit chance to succeed.  He got his players and it would either work or it didn't and it obviously didn't.

Fair enough.  Sell me on what he's done at ucla

This is not directed at Alford Bailey, as he is a longtime and respected poster.  But this would be a good test.  Do we think AH, the ghost, and some of the other newer guys would be able to stay out of a Brad Stevens discussion only post?

No shot, considering as soon as this thread starts talking about other coaches they all disappear.

That said I think I am now:

1. May

2. McDermott

3. Mcasland

4. Field

1 team championship level in 6 years is not impressive at UCLA.

True to every other coach search we have:

- Infighting about our resident insiders.

- An influx of new posters with hostile attitudes

- Lines drawn, PRO & CON, about a dozen or so possibilities

- Radio Silence from the AD

- Disappointment, woe, and smugness

After weeks of this, a new coach will be announced.  There will be jubilation from many, angst from others.  Then acceptance.  Then the portal lottery will be the attention grabber.  We will win the portal and spend months predicting our success.

Then season begins, hopefully with positive results for a change.

:farting_smiley:

Exactly this. I’m a long time lurker and very rare poster.  i’m a huge IU fan that lives out of state so I have no information to contribute. This thread has jumped the shark though. I will be moving on until we actually hire a coach.  I trust the A.D. and we should let him do his job and support him.

For my parting advice, if there are posters that you don’t like, block them and don’t reply to them as tempting as it is. They tend to go away when they don’t get the attention they want. Go Hoosiers!

I don’t think May leaves UM after 1 year, so I’m going with McDermott or McCollum!  Let’s get a winner and never look back!

TBH i think if may was going to leave Michigan for us it doesn’t matter if it’s one year or ten years. If he wants to coach his Alma mater and bring them back to greatness the timeline doesn’t really matter

This is what happens when the coach is so bad he needs “retired” midseason but you don’t want to put an interim in place.

Then there is a large gap of time for a coaching search that must be filled with excitement and anticipation because a top 10 paid roster isn’t good enough to make the 68 team field to keep the fans distracted from said coaching search.

And the AD has to wait until the season is over to actually formally do anything. That’s the mess we are in because Woody and crew held the position captive for an extra year to prove to himself he’s a failure.

Sums it up?

Yea,  still think it was smart to not throw an interim guy in the mix who you could get stuck with if they have some success.

Cronin is a very good coach.  Imo he is a high floor, low ceiling guy.  Which might be what IU needs.  I think he would consistently make the tournament here which is something we have lacked since the middle of Tom Crean's tenure.  He's just not very likeable.  We can do much worse than Mick Cronin.  I'm just hoping we can still do better.

He did make the final four and lost on a half court shot at the buzzer. There is not much higher of a ceiling than that
