General Coach Candidate News

He 100% got fired. Anyone who believes otherwise is naive. This was to help create as soft a landing as possible for him. Woodson was so pissed about it when he was told that he threatened to quit at the next practice.

That's whats so funny. He totally retired but was so hurt he had to have his buddies show up at practice. Most people are super happy to retire. But I bet he thinks in his mind we believe he retired.

"I quit, I'm done" was the exact quote when he was pouting at practice.

and he should have been.. ridiculous he was allowed to come back.. most people would be shown the door after a comment like that...

Agree.. but could this go in Woodson's thread? You're getting in the way of my 5th Beard discussion this week.

Cronin isn't a Top 15 coach lolololol

How is Cronin not a top 15 coach? I'd argue he's closer to top 10 than he is 15. He's made 12/13 tournaments, been to the 2nd weekend 3/4 years and his team is currently playing their best basketball of the season right now.

That's honestly wild to me.... to each their own.

Pretty much every poll says otherwise.

19. Mick Cronin, UCLA

Cronin led UCLA to three straight Sweet 16s and the 2021 national title game before a 16-17 season in 2023-24. Don't count on the former longtime Cincinnati coach having back-to-back down years. Even amid the transition to the Big Ten, Cronin appears to have the right mix of returning talent and transfers required to get the Bruins dancing again. (11)

11. Mick Cronin, UCLA

Cronin enjoyed excellent roster continuity during his first four years at UCLA as he improved the Bruins' win total each season, culminating with a dominant run to the Pac-12 regular season title last season. Now comes a retooling season that will put his freshman-oriented roster strategy to the test. But given his excellent 21-year track record across Murray State, Cincinnati and UCLA, there is little doubt Cronin will make it work. His teams have qualified for 12 straight NCAA Tournaments. (9)

16. Mick Cronin, UCLA

Speaking about not being used to losing seasons, Mick Cronin is in the same boat as Miller. Cronin had a few of them at Cincinnati, but last year was his first since 2007-08. It’s been a long time. I’d also argue that Cronin’s done a very respectable job as the head coach of the Bruins. It’s a position that comes with a lot of pressure and scrutiny, but he’s handled it well and been a very good tournament coach with the Bruins.

I could definitely see us ending up with Cronin when it's all said and done. And let's face, anything is better than the incompetent coach and entire coaching staff we've had for the last 4 years.

What's wild about it? He's won 70% of his conference games at UCLA. He's been to the second weekend of the tournament in three out of the last four seasons....one less time than IU has the last 30 seasons. Astounding that people think IU is too good for Mick Cronin. He's too good for us honestly but I believe he's ready for a change of scenery.

His buyout is definitely a detriment but if we have the money that Stevens is supposedly commanding, we'll have enough for Cronin.

But.... sitting here today, taking out off-the-court stuff.... you're saying with a straight face Cronin is a better basketball coach than Beard?

Certainly not the gap between the two where you scoff at one and then call the other a no-brainer. Cronin is an entirely better fit at IU than Beard which is more than half the battle.

Coyle said this morning that both Buzz and Cronin have massive buyouts and won’t be considered.

If they're willing to throw bags at Brad, I don't see where any buyouts would be prohibitive on the surface... the question becomes about the value... are Williams and Cronin worth their buyouts to get them here? Not convinced that they are, but it's not my money, either...
