Something to be said about a coach that failed early, went and worked under Majerus and changed his whole coaching outlook.  People want coaches to adapt and here is an example of a coach doing that.   If IU hired him they would be hiring the new version and not the fired Illinois St coach.   Not saying he is the top choice but I would be willing to give him a chance.  He definitely wouldn’t win the press conference I’m guessing but then again that might be a good thing in the long run

He worked for Majerus from 2007 to 2011. He took the Loyola job in 2011 and then posted six straight losing conference seasons. Whatever he did to change his coaching outlook, it took quite a while for it to show in in the win column...

Bringing in a guy who has made 2 tournaments in 17 years to fix a program that has made 4 tournaments in the past 13 years would be a disaster. We need a major hire. Our program looks like a joke to outsiders. The only way to change that is to make a serious hire. Hire Chris Beard or Scott Drew? Ok, they have things figured out. Hire Calbert Cheaney or Porter Moser? Not so much.

Fwiw, there are MAJOR differences between Porter Moser and Calbert Cheaney. They aren't in the same category from a coaching resume and, thus, candidate perspective.

Oh for sure, I don’t mean to equate the two as candidates. Cheaney, honestly imo, shouldn’t even be in consideration. Moser at least is a current head coach who is having success at his school. I just think both guys are examples of coaches who wouldn’t change the current outside perception of the program. Hiring Moser would just make it look like we swapped one mid major flavor of the month for another. Hiring Cheaney would definitely look way worse, though.

Hopefully Dolson is going to pick whoever he feels is the best candidate and won’t give a crap about outside perception of the program.   We got enough posters on message boards that worry enough about what outside people think of the team they follow

With like half our team in the transfer portal though, whoever we hire is probably going to need to remake the roster for next season. Poor outside perception of the program could make the new guy’s job harder in that regard.

I'm seeing 2 different train of thought in this thread.
1 we need a home run
2 we need to hire now because 4 players are in the transfer portal

If #1 the names mentioned are still coaching in the Tournament. If #2 we are not getting the homerun hires. We would be getting either a retired coach or a coach whose team is done for the season.

What do you want

Good news is there is a lot of fish out there. I'm not meaning to bash any of the guys in the portal, but we kind of knew Al was gone. Parker never even suited up for IU. Geronimo doesn't surprise me at all. Hope Armaan and Race come back.

Well, what I fear is the worst of both worlds: we wait to hire someone and they aren’t a home run. So we miss out on transfers but don’t even get a good coach out of it.

Exactly. Everyone forgets that the offseason is going to be wild with player movement. Who says the new coach, hope it's a home run hire, can't bring in transfers?

Transfer portal is no big deal. I’m not convinced they’ll all actually leave. Good idea to explore your options right now If you’re a player

Franklin and Thompson are the only two I care about. Both should get interest from legit programs. Especially Franklin. I doubt either are back next year.

Geronimo is the only one who sounds like he is gone outside of Al.

He is most likely going to Marquette

Nah.  He'll stay put before he goes to Marquette.  No reason to uproot the family and his Chicago ties for freaking Milwaukee.  He's got a good thing -- Chicago basketball generally sux and he's the hottest name in town.  I'm not even sure he'd move up the road a few blocks to DePaul.  I'll bet he stays at Loyola, unless a real program calls.
