General Coach Candidate News

On Chris Beard's reluctance to move away from kids. In 2016 he accepted the job at UNLV before he then took the job in Lubbock. Vegas to Lubbock is 13 1/2 hr drive. Lubbock to Bloomington is 16 1/2 hrs. Not saying this would be an apples to apples comparison because it clearly is not but the fact that he was willing to be away from them at one time could suggest given the right circumstances he may again be willing. Also I don't know exactly where they live but it is a 'few' hours from Lubbock.

I had wondered if this had been the case when Crean was fired. It would make sense.

I remember Elston staying for sure but not sure who else if anyone.

All we are trying to do is win. Beilein wins. There is talent on the roster now and room to make some a move for another player. Beilein can win in year 1. 4-6 winning years sounds like exactly what we are trying to do.

Stevens is the target IMO. But if he says no, screw going the mid major route. Get someone who has won at the Power 5 level. Beilein, Pitino, Oats, Musselman, etc.. The coach needs to have experience at the highest level of college basketball because the league is too tough to bleed in a new head coach to the Power 5.
He wins. That is what we want. I don't care if he is 68. As I posted before, there are quite a few coaches older than him. I'm not saying he is my number 1 or even in top 4, but man. I'd rather have a 68 year old Bielien winning than someone like Pearl, Sampson, Self are anyone else who plays loose with rules

I stormed Kirkwood and celebrated with fellow Hoosiers.  One of the most fun nights of all time.  And I’ve had some good ones. Haha.

It was spring break it was with a girl and her family that I've known for years unreal how Moye blocked that.

Is Dolson willing to wait until the NBA season ends if Stevens is undecided before that time? If Dolson waits that long, do we risk losing Beard, Drew, and other top candidates? Thanks for the insights!

I have no insight; I need bifocals!   Glad to have you join us and hope you like what you see.

As to your question,  IMO Stevens will either crap or get off the pot.  I don't think Stevens would play the let me think about this until the season is over game anymore than I think Dolson would allow that no matter how much he/we might want to land Stevens.  The regular NBA season ends May 16 and then there's playoffs with no idea how long Boston could advance.  That's missing too much recruiting time plus no idea how long Roberts and Hunter may be willing to stick around with no assurance they have jobs next fall.  Then you have the issue of will our returning players want to deal with that kind of uncertainty and the same for Logan Duncomb.

Yes I think that's right. I just thought it would be odd to keep two assistants and a strength coach unless he was expecting an extended wait.

Agreed here. I DO think it’s possible this drags out three weeks or so, if other candidates are coaching to the final 4. That even gives you some nice cover. Some point thereafter gets to be too long, and if it’s Stevens you probably need to make an announcement that he’s coming after the Celtics are eliminated (if he isn’t coming immediately).

Seems it would be sorta cruel if Stevens continued to wax poetic about Indiana yet had no intention whatsoever to listen to an offer. Makes no sense. He very well may not leave Boston, but if you love the school and it's fanbase, it unlikely you lead them on if you aren't at least a bit intrigued by the possibility.

Right and I don't think the Celtics would be ok with that. If it came out that he took the IU job and wanted to finish the season with Boston then Ainge would tell him not to let the door hit him on the way out. No chance they say go ahead and coach our franchise in the playoffs while not giving a rat's @$$ what happens.

I've tried to get on board with Beard but am having trouble. Can someone please explain the love for him without using the phrase "up-and-comer" bc we've tried that and it got us here. This hire needs to be a sure thing. Stop taking chances and throw everything at your guy. Dakich said it best - it's been 20 years since we've been truly relevant. 20 freaking years.

To me, Beard looks like a gamble. Granted, maybe a better gamble than Archie but looking at his stats - not really get 10M to buy out Archie impressive.

Yes, I know the Knight connection and don't give two shits.

If Brad says no how many guys do you have between Him and Beard?

Okay, now this logic works for me.  If Beilein is your fall back solution if all the big fish aren't biting, then sure I'm for it.  I simply hope he's not considered "the guy".  JMHO.  And yes, his comments about thugs will probably hurt him in some recruiting situations.  Curious if any other schools have expressed interest in JB??

He's had great success at a place that is very tough to have that kind of success. I get your hesitancy because to look at his last couple of seasons it doesn't seem great. He did go to back-back elite 8's and was the runner up in one. I think he has the right personality and coaching acumen to succeed at IU but everyone is a gamble of some sort.

I want a proven winner. Don't care about his age as long as there's some sort of succession plan (no, I don't know what that looks like).

Beilein, Donovan, Bennett, Matta, Altman, Drew, Pitino

I know we aren't getting BD or Bennett but guess what - we're not getting Brad either. Why not throw everything at all of them after Brad says no? From what Dakich said, BD had serious interest 4 years ago and Glass wasn't willing to open the checkbook. That seems to be different this time around with Dolson. He better at least reach out.

He had two fantastic back-to-back seasons - absolutely. Almost won a NC at Texas Tech - impressive. Last couple seasons, however, not mind blowing. Better than what we had but still - is this really our guy?

The problem with Bieleins age is that if he really is only here for 5-6 years, that’s only a few recruiting classes he would  even see reach their senior year. Recruiting could drop off after a few years if that’s the case.

Not an up and comer he is 48.    He took a Little Rock team and won 30 games and beat the crap out of Purdue in his first tournament game.   Took over a Texas Tech program thats basketball tradition was next to nothing and in his short time there have made them into a national talking point.   nothing has been handed to him and he has grinded for everything he has gotten.  Basketball lifer though and through.   Probably most important around these parts is that he is the closest or will be the closest thing to Bobby Knight there will ever be.   He coached under him and Pat knight so a little nostalgia around these parts are not going to hurt.   His personality is what I would love to have here.  Always going to promote the brand in a positive sometimes funny way(watch his campfire talks on YouTube).   Defense is the calling card and he still runs a motion offense.  Now those wanting Beard and thinking it will be modern basketball are in for a rude awaking.   Most Tech games I watch are rock fights. I’m guessing his use of the 3 pt line and percentages are less then what people would want but if you are winning it won’t matter
