Why is the portal open right now? I understand the “need” for it to be open during the CFB playoff because of academic calendars, but that’s not the case for CBB. There seems to be no good reason why the portal is open during the NCAA Tournament.

Maybe there’s a good reason but the cynic in me thinks it’s good because it keeps fan bases who don’t have teams still in the tourney engaged with college basketball.

Another FWIW.

Notre Dame guard JR Konieczny has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, @JamieShaw5 reports.   Nothing to get overly excited about him.

What maybe makes this announcement mildly intriguing is the fact he has a brother '25 Chase Konieczny who I don't think has made a commitment and has a pretty good high school career stat line.  He is just a 3-star and not an overly impressive offer list although DePaul, Minnesota and Iowa have offered.  37% 4-year career 3-point shooter.

Purely FWIW -

Miami’s Jalen Blackmon has entered the transfer portal. The 6’2” guard appeared in 20 games, averaging 6.9 PPG, 1.2 RPG, and 1.4 APG per game. Blackmon averaged 21.3 PPG, and shot 38% from 3 with Stetson in 2023-24.

Borzello has since tweeted he's applying for a medical redshirt so I'm presuming he's only available if he gets a redshirt approved.

Davin Cosby, Wake Forest guard.  Two years of eligibility left.  4 start out of high school, played at Alabama as a freshman.  Has not played that well in college compared to his rating.  90% of his shots have been from three and he has made 48 of 147 over two years (33%).

Elijah Moore, Syracuse guard.  Freshman 4 star, still three years of eligibility left.  Started 16 games for Syracuse.  Averaged 15.7 minutes, 5.2 points, 1.5 reb, 1.0 assists.  Shot 39/31/75.

I live in the area and actually my wife knew the mother in hs.  He really never materialized at ND.  He did have a great high school career but never really played at ND.  I know (wife follows mother on fb) they were torn whether to stay last year but I think they thought he may get a better shake for playing time with Shrews.  I dont know if the brother Chase is any better than JR was.  I think JR may have had better hs stats.  Good kids and good family by all accounts.

They are also supposed to make the NIL more compensation for name, image and likeness starting this year… instead of purely a “pay for play” free-for-all.

Whether or not that actually happens remains to be seen.

I wonder if that can be legally enforced.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that it will end up like everything else the NCAA does... it's a rule... and enforcement will end up being selective... it's been that way since before John Wooden...

Yea.  I cannot imagine the Clearinghouse telling some kid, especially one that is less well off, he can't get $1M NIL, only $500K.  The player and schools will hit the courts, and I think state legislatures will get involved too if they don't already have labor laws on the books to cover this situation.  I can't see this Clearinghouse having any teeth.

I’m guessing this will be the Clearinghouse NIL approval process:

That's when we will lose our advantage.

I mean actual law legally, not if it's within the NCAA rules.

Doryan Onwucheka, 6'11" Center, Georgia Tech.  Ranked 112th in class of 24.  Likely will have 4 years eligibility as he only played the first 10 games.  Averaged 3.5 points and 4.9 rebounds in 18.2 minutes.

Mgbako is in the portal and testing the NBA draft (ha!).

I'm glad he will be gone.

I definitely don't wish ill of him.

But I don't have to wish him success either.
