That 2004-05 season under Davis is still a little perplexing to me. Yes, we finished 15-14. Yes, we lost to Iowa. But ...

We finished tied for fourth in the B1G, three -- yes, three -- games ahead of Iowa. Yet Stevie and the boys went dancing while went NIT-ing.

To me, that's like the Cubs (yes, I'm a Cubs fan) winning the NL Central and the Dredbirds finishing 10 games back, yet because St. Louie might have gone 6-0 against Chicago, they make the playoffs instead.

But 15 years later we're still having some of the same problems. How many times do fans tweet a player after a loss telling them how bad they are, or go after a recruit when they pick another school? IMO we as fans don't do a very good job supporting the players and coaches of the team we supposedly love.

While I understand that this happens, I think it's overrated and that it happens in all big time programs.

However...think of the dynamic as (careful, I'm gonna get all Purdoo-ey equation now):

Bad results X Fan Interest = Total Negative Social Media Content

We have top ten fan interest and mediocre results--that results in far more negative noise than other major programs. I promise that UK families are feeling the social media dark side this year in a way they haven't usually.

first, off it will be a cold day in hell when the Cardinals finish 10 games behind the Cubs. So you can take your baseball hypothetical and put it in your pipe and smoke it. :-)

Anecdotal evidence of people that didn't like Davis purely from a basketball standpoint doesn't make the other sad reality less true.

I'm sure that's true.  I just don't want all of us that wanted him fired lumped together into one group.  It's important to remember that he truly did need to go.

Our non-conference slate killed us that year. I'm convinced that season is what eventually got us on the cupcake diet that we see most years now.

But yeah, that season was weird. Illinois, MSU and Wisconsin all went to the Elite 8 or further. We finished fourth and missed the tourney. Minnesota was fifth and got a bid after they kicked our butts in the BTT. Ohio State was the 6 seed and was banned from the postseason. Iowa was the 7 seed, went 7-9 in the Big Ten, and got a bid. I think they only lost one non-conference game. Just a really bizarre season all around.

And it's not like we weren't good enough. We beat MSU and Wisconsin at home that year and took Wisconsin down to the final play in Madison (after getting homered beyond belief all game). Our clock operator cost us a win in the Charlotte game, too.

I wasn't disagreeing with your point at all. I was just saying that it was THAT and all the other factors that made the job very difficult for him.

It's never easy to follow a legend.  Especially one as polarizing as Coach Knight.
