Class of '66 Old Fart

IUBB @ Florida State in ACC - Big 10 Challenge - 12/9/20

Fair point.

I’m sort of baffled by it really. Jerome has the length, athleticism, and scoring talent to play with an FSU squad. If nothing else, I totally get that he is somewhat inconsistent with the 3, but MY GOD, if that be the case, don’t you have to ride the wave when the wind is blowing? Hunter should have eaten Trey’s minutes on the perimeter tonight.

Mixed feelings. Proud they competed harder and stayed closer than I thought but also feeling like I look for a lot of moral victories these days. Despite the Debbie Downers, there was a lot of good tonight. It’s a hard team to defend and rebound against and I thought we held our own a big part of the night. FSU is good at home and just a solid program in general. There’s no denying that. But as is so often the case, the truth is somewhere in between the downers and all sunshine. The offense is so often offensive. Where are we without TJD? Man, I just want the excitement back around IUBB like we’ve had for IUFB this year.

Yeah I wasn’t quite sold on Trey being out there. I mean he has the ability to get to the rim and kick.

Interesting move for sure but it didn’t cost us the game. We shot 75% from the line and missed countless layups and of course wide open 3’s.

Turnovers were an issue but their length and ability to clog the paint effected some of our drives and shot attempts for sure.

We didn’t lose to a bad team guys. We lost by two on the road to a team that could do some damage come March. All without shooting the ball well. I’d say that’s pretty impressive considering the factors.

We would be title contenders if two of our guys were 38% shooters

So, what you’re saying is Indiana is a title contender? I don’t think so, but based on your post...

Rob - 44%
Hunter - 44%

Al misses the mark at 37%, but I’m guessing you already knew that.
Race is still shooting 50%, but he won’t be shooting many.

Isn't Leal supposed to be a shooter? If we're crapping the bed from the perimeter like we were tonight, why not put him in and let him chuck a couple from the cheap  seats. If he misses 2-3, sit him back down. He didn't play a second tonight.

I hope he doesn't end up another Damezi.

Also, the refs sucked. I’m sorry and I’m not blaming the loss on them, but it has honestly become the worst part of CBB for me. The stoppage was ridiculous, as was the lack of traveling and amount of fouls called.

If the lack of shooting wasn’t a consistent and Uncorrected problem for 4 years people would care less about this loss.

That’s what everybody said. His stats never backed it up.

After seeing that blonde-haired dude from Stanford abuse him on a fast break last week, I'm convinced that he and Lander simply aren't ready for college basketball.

Maybe they'll be good players for us someday, but recruiting misses are keeping us from reaching our potential as a program. You simply can't have guys leaving early and not have their replacements lined up, which is a cycle we've been stuck in for about 6 or 7 years now.

I prefer wins but close losses on the road are better than how we played vs TX. Still amazed that we cannot shoot but very impressed with our on ball D.

Hope Franklin keeps improving. Hope Al can understand better when to drive and when to work the ball. Hope we can develop an identity on offense - well a positive identity. Right now it seems to have flashes of a set play mixed with the kids from Hoosiers trying to understand Gene Hackmans four passes strategy.

I can have hope after a game like this.

I’m hearing shooters? Right? Shooters needed? Didn’t we have one sitting on the bench most of the 2nd half? Telling me Jerome wasn’t a better option than Galloway this evening?

I have to strongly disagree with this take.  He hasn’t shown he is deserving of those minutes.  He will hit from deep a couple times but that’s about it.  The game just seems too fast for him to me.  He struggles to hold onto the ball much of the time.   Forget about defending or rebounding.  I cringe each time I see him get isolated against an opposing wing on the other side of the floor.  Obviously, Galloway has a lot to work on but you can see he ‘gets it’ and knows how to play.  I would be happy if we are talking about minutes between the two of them they all go to Galloway.  I think CAM sees that too.  I have noticed quite a few times when Hunter turns it over or is not tough with the ball CAM just throws both arms up in the air.  One seems like a player at this level and the other doesn’t but that’s just my opinion.  To each his own.

3 point shooting. Something I am sure you understood. But your having to dig deep to justify the failings of this team.

I love seeing the tweets from IU Twitter about Crean had this shooter and that shooter!

what happened vs that 2-3 zone vs Cuse? Aren’t we suppose to out shoot a zone? (Don’t answer, I’m trying to be an armchair coach ;) )

Our dead eye shooter went 0-6 because his elbow was jacked up.  Do you even watch games?  Or do you just defend bad offenses and criticize good offenses. That Crean team wasn’t even his best and it shot the ball 11% percentage points better than us.

In modern day college basketball if you can’t consistently hit the three you are severely putting pressure on all other aspects of the game.

Regardless of how well you play on defense in that game more pressure is going to be applied.   It’s not just threes.  When you miss Little runners and 5 foot bunnies to extend leads and you are putting more pressure on your defense and on the mental part.   Teams can overcome lack of shooting from game to game but to consistently rely on winning without the three in college basketball is playing with fire.

People want Hunter in the game for his shooting but from my viewpoint he handed the ball to FSU multiple times and didn’t look locked in on defensive end.    FSU had their stud step up in OT and hit a deep three after being like 2-7 from the field and made the big shot at the end.   IU has a stud freshman that is clearly in college a year too early and wasn’t in the game

FSU has a 19 game home winning streak for a reason: they are good, and with every team with a home court advantage they get a little help.   IU isn’t the first team to get a questionable whistle and they won’t be the last

Coaches change their recruiting philosophies after getting burned a couple cycles.   Might be time for Archie to pull a Jay Wright and tell his assistants I don’t care what they are ranked I want you to recruit me dudes who can (....ing) shoot the ball.

Do you consider Tom Crean adding 42 sets (literally 42 sets) the week of the Cuse game good preparation and good offense vs the 2-3 Zone ;)

And no, we can’t hit shots.

Hit enough to make it interesting and hit some shots in some pressure situations just can’t hit enough to gain some separation.  I will have to go back a watch again but they missed every shot that could of extended the lead

No. But your moving the goal posts. Your trying to claim that Crean didn’t have better shooters. Whatever Creans failings he had shooting.

And on the rare times we hit a big 3. FSU seemed to always match it.

You think I had to dig deep? Nah, not at all. There are only 12 players on the roster and several of them haven’t shot a three. It wasn’t too tough to dig up 3pt stats.

Rob 44%
Jerome 44%

I’m not trying to justify any failings of the team. I was merely saying I disagree with your post that if we had two players who shoot better than 38% we would be title contenders...because we do...and I certainly don’t think we’re considered a legitimate national title contender.
