We've missed the NIT twice in the last 5 years, and 5 times in the last 10 years. Still kind of astounding to think our program has fallen that far.

That's what happens when you hire a guy

With no HC experience

then hire a guy

already on probation

then follow it up with

A Crean. a Crean is a coach that just doesn't understand basketball at all btw

Like I've been saying for awhile: ESPN's next 30 for 30 needs to be about how a group of men inadvertently worked together to bring down what was once one of college basketball's best programs, and a powerful asset for the school, the community and the state. It took nearly 20 years of stupidity and repeated mistakes, but they pulled it off.

It is amazing yet said. I love March madness but did not even see the brackets til 9pm. I never would miss the selection show when iu was good. Hopefully archie gets her done but I will hold judgement. Something always seems to come up to screw us with hires.

It seems IU has a governance problem. It starts with the Board of Trustees. They are mainly just political hacks with no real talent for running a multi-billion dollar business. They make bad decisions in hiring presidents and ADs. This results in bad coaching hires. Look at universities with great athletic programs and the difference is in governance.

Recruiting.

I don't know how much longer recruiting will do it after the way their home crowd booed them off the floor at halftime of their game with Michigan late in the year. And it was resounding booing.

Well he's got a top 10/15 recruiting class coming in next year. There's a lot of folks in the state of Maryland calling for his head, but the Athletic Director situation at MD is up in the air (Kevin Anderson, the current AD is on a 6 month sabbatical). I think he's got at least one more season.

A university's success is not defined by athletic performance, it's defined by academic performance.  IU has a $3.5 billion budget and just $100 million of that is devoted to athletics.  The athletic department is a very small part of the president and board's responsibility, and while they should strive to make it as competitive as possible, at the end of the day the school's mission and it's financial priority is to focus on academics (as it should be).  It would be impractical to judge the president and board based on a department that makes up less than 3% of their financial responsibility.

I still don't miss it. College Basketball is great. It is even better when IU is great. We will be great again.

A successful athletics program has a positive effect on the rest of the university. More students try to enroll, more donations come in, there are no negatives. There are plenty of excellent academic schools with top notch athletics programs. Duke, Stanford, Notre Dame and Michigan come to mind.

Positive? Yes. People don’t go to Stanford due to athletics. People don’t go to Duke for athletics. People don’t go to Notre Dame due to football. Same as Michigan. If people went to schools for athletics they could/would go to different schools within each of these states. We are fans. We are a truly small portion of the fan base. How many here truly went to IU? How many went there due to basketball? I bet an even smaller number. I have never understood this argument. Athletics may account for less than 1% of a university. The purpose of athletics to try and make money from donors. Not draw kids to the school.

Then we need to elect better governors since they appoint most of the university trustees.

Two of the most recent appointees were Quinn Buckner and Harry Gonso, so  I hope that is a step in the right direction. I'm not saying the BoT needs to be all ex-jocks, but members that view athletics in a positive light has not been a trait of the board for about 20 years.

If we'd quit re-electing Shoulders to the board, it would be a major step in the right direction imo. But he just won election again so I'm stuck with him for at least 2 1/2 more years.

I don't understand it. Maryland had a couple dominant years in the ACC and like one good B1G season but haven't REALLY done much since the early 2000's.

I live in Harford County, MD about 2 miles from John Carroll, where Immanuel Quickly played HS ball (Kentucky recruit), and got to see him and Jalen Smith (MD recruit) play a couple times during the Baltimore Catholic League season. Smith is a big man with skills and will probably be one of the best freshmen in the B1G next season. If he pans out, Turgeon may be around for several more years.

IU should be a public Ivy, but our trustees are more interested in quantity of students than they are in the quality of students. What is it now, 41,000?  and I suspect they would like to see it reach 50,000. IU is not a selective school. About 70% of applicants get in. Compare that to Michigan, UNC, UVA, Notre Dame, Cal, etc. You'll see what I mean. Academically IU is rated very close to the bottom of the B10. Maybe ahead of Nebraska and Rutgers. It doesn't have to be that way. Tighten admissions. If Indiana kids can't get into IU they can get into  ISU, BSU, USI, or Vincennes. The problem is the trustees are appointed based on their connections to the Republican party and then we have people with dubious qualifications running the show. IU is a good school that should be so much better.
