bleedhoosier Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 Used to be hardcore about this but I dunno anymore. When I look across cbb and see so many guys playing their guts out, with their name on the back...I just think we overreact to the whole thing. I'm not sure it's THAT big of a deal. I get it though, let's keep tradition.Sent from my SCH-I545 using BtownBanners mobile app IUsafety, AKHoosier and Dalton26 3 Quote

At this point it's part of IU basketball to me, and it helps make us different. I don't want to be like every other team out there, and no names helps us stand out. OliviaPope40 Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 You play for the name that is on the front of your jersey and for the one on the back. ALASKA HOOSIER 1 Quote
Popular Post jmsgws Posted March 29, 2017 Popular Post Posted March 29, 2017 I bet you could ask 100 fans of other programs, and the vast majority would not even know or even care if IU had the names of players on the Jerseys. When I think of all things that makes Indiana Basketball, Indiana Basketball the names on the jerseys wouldn't even make the list. There are so many things more important to the program, that I don't care one way or the other. Now the Candy Stripes, don't even think about getting rid of those! akinnaird24, VO5, Dalton26 and 5 others 8 Quote

Popular Post LockdownD Posted March 30, 2017 Popular Post Posted March 30, 2017 We have these traditions for a reason. The name on the front of the jersey is what's most important. It's not a destination, it's who we are. I think it's great that we don't retire numbers. When a player puts on that number, they are assuming a responsibility to be worthy. Be worthy of the number that belonged to player previous and those yet to come. To me the number is more important than the name as it can continue to be relevant and connects generations. But, for heavens sake, don't get rid of the candy striped pants. Those striped warmups "scream" Indiana basketball. It is so cool to see fans in their candy stripes filing in to AH. They are apparently popular with high schools as I've seen several teams wear striped warmups in their school colors. Candy striped pants and Indiana basketball, it's Hoosier tradition. Then I would venture to say that likely many former players, majority of long time fans, former coaches, managers and the boosters have "lost touch with reality".... walk around SSAH and Cook. Look at the walls of Nick's. Reality is that TRADITION is a huge part of IU. Its part of the mystique that makes us unique. It's why IU has the resources for basketball that it does. It's an important reason why the top young coach in the country came here. It's a reason why former players have such a strong attachment and opinions. IU has one of the largest alumni bases in the country- I bet I can guess what most of them think. Start messing with the traditions, then we become Every Other Place U. No thanks. I'm not sure how many division 1 teams there are without names on the back of the jerseys, but obviously IU is one without them as they claim to play for the name on the front. Do you think this affects recruits at all? Also, do you think we should add names to the back of the jerseys? Absolutely not. When you think of the tradition of Indiana basketball is names on jerseys the first thing you think of? Top 10? Top 20? My point of it's so insignificant, especially today where college basketball is an interview for the NBA. jmsgws 1 Quote

Um.. no, top 5; along with the candy stripes, under 7 time out, 5 banners and Martha.. If it's insignificant, then why not leave it alone? I'm sure a lot of kids have dreams of going to the League; but few make it and I'm sure most of the top don't care about traditions, they just want the easiest, quickest path there.. I get that. But for the majority of players at a place like IU, those that don't make the NBA, those that play and earn their degree, the traditions become part of who they are. We'll just agree to disagree. Jeff_Boy_Ardee Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 Another thing for me personally. I remember watching the game when they had "Courage" on the back and I just thought our jerseys looked ugly with a "name" on the back thebigweave, ALASKA HOOSIER and hoosierbannerd 3 Quote
