IU Candidate: Tony Bennett (University of Virginia)

Recommended Posts

I just want to be like (results) Kansas, UK, Duke, NC, Arzona etc. whoever can take us there.

I think Bennett could win big but not sure he can recruit well enough to be at the tippity top.

I could be wrong. Wouldn't be upset with Bennett though, at all. Just think we would stay behind those others listed.

It might be easier to recruit to Indiana than Virginia, especially when he has Duke and UNC and Louisville and Syracuse and even Notre Dame in the same conference.

It's either been mentioned here or in another thread, but I'd be interested to see what Bennett could do in recruiting with a little lower academic standards needed to get guys enrolled. IU is far from a community college, but I believe UVA is very difficult to get into. (Someone correct me off I'm off base there)

Idk what the admission requirements for athletes at either school are, but here are the overall numbers.

UVA: 28.9% acceptance rate

Middle 50% rate for SAT scores:

      620-720 Critical Reading

      630-740 Math

      620-720 Writing

IU: 78% acceptance rate

      Middle 50% rate

SAT Scores (Critical Reading and                          Math 1110–1300

Allegedly, UNC-Chapel Hill is tough for out of state students to get into as well. As far as UVA goes, a couple friends of my brother's got into UVA as athletes and I know their grades or SAT/ACT's weren't amazing.

Yep. Good stuff.

Give Bennett a wider range of guys to target and see how much better he could do. I want to see it.

I would like to see it as well. #1 on my list. I think he is the next super star in coaching. I would love to see what he could do with the resources at IU. If he doesn't come here he will be at another blue blood down the road in my opinion

I think the wider net would help fix some of the problems that people have with his offense.

If Billy doesn't want to come here I hope we make a strong push for him. Played basketball at a high level, relatively young, great defense, recruits well, runs a clean program, postseason success. I don't see much to dislike.

Every argument I've heard against Bennett is "BORRRRRRRRIIIIIINGGGGG" which is one of the top-5 worst arguments I've ever heard against anything. If Crean had his own best seasons and Bennett's worst seasons, he would still be here with a large chunk of the fanbase still behind him. Bennett's best seasons are better than Crean's too.

That boring offense is 112-30 in the last 4 years with back to back ACC titles (against 4 hall of fame coaches) and 1 conference tournament championship. Conference finish(1,1,2,5), sweet 16 and elite 8 appearance. Not bad for a head coach with less then 12 years head coaching experience

I don't get it man. Brad Stevens teams were defensive juggernauts and had decent offenses. Bennett has had a top 5 offense and defense in the same season. He won the ACC 2 years in a row.....AT VIRGINIA!!! He's won an ACC tournament... he's made it past the sweet 16..... his teams are smart and consistently in position to make a run. Imagine him getting the kids in Indiana that we let get away (Guy, McIntosh, Neese, etc.). Now if he's able to sprinkle in the zeller, yogi, Wilkes-types, that WILL come around again, then we are a perennial contender. I prefer Donovan but I'd be overjoyed with Bennett. He checks all of my boxes.

Edit: not saying he's Brad Stevens by any means but he has many of his qualities.

Yup, Bennett is my 1B no question.

I think the Donovan talk is (rightfully) pulling the shade over everyone's eyes on most other candidates. The Florida beatdown didn't help either, but if a down year means a top 5 conference finish and getting beat by an on fire 4 seed, I'm cool with that.

If Donovan wasn't a thing in this coaching search, I think this would be a much different narrative with some. (It seems like a majority would be on board with Bennett, though)
