I'm not saying you can't criticize Tom Crean. He deserves some and should be criticized.

However, I don't think it's right to discuss firing someone just one year removed from the best two-year span in a while. Criticize, but don't talk firing - at least not right now.

Exactly, and thank you! I criticize Crean a lot, but he doesn't need to be fired. Plus, I don't feel the need to boast my opinions in every post. Just getting old and annoying. Maybe, just condense all the Crean hate threads into one.

I feel coach Crean does not have the knowledge to teach fundamentals or a structured offense. I also feel he is too arrogant to admit any weakness on his part. Because he came here when others shied away I would give him another year. But if he does not make significant changes in philosophy buy him out after 2015. How can this coach not realize what an opportunity he has here. Simply ask for help or study successful coaches. If he does not he will lose the best job he ever had. Pride is an affliction that can blind one to reality. It is not too late coach. But it is your choice to make.

Last years collapse and this years debacle would seem to me that our incoming freshman next year might rethink stepping on a potential IU Titanic. Come on Coach Crean..... Find the root cause of the systemic Team issue, fix it and move forward!

I keep seeing this all over the place on IU forums. Do any of you guys have inside info about this, or are you just speculating based on your own beliefs? I get that winning plays into these guys decisions, but you guys are acting like it is the only actual reason a kid chooses to go to a school. There are a ton of reasons kids go to a school, if winning was the only actual reason a kid went to a school then Boehim, coach K, Izzo would be getting nothing but top 20 recruits every year. There are many factors that determine whether a kid goes to a specific school

Posted

Also, find it kind of funny that people keep talking about kids jumping ship and decommitting, or transferring away if Crean stays on coach. Then suggest firing Crean, because firing the guy that they committed to come and play for, or are already playing for is going to encourage them to stay here.

I think it would be up to the individual recruit. Truth is, if that logic were really true, no one would ever be able to rebuild a team. Personally, I think that way of thinking is a somewhat emotional over-reaction. CTC has done some pretty fine recruiting for a school that was pretty near death penalty. CKW has done some pretty good recruiting for a perennial doorstop. Recruits see the Sweet 16's, Final Fours, lottery picks, etc., a whole lot more than they see one years failure. Will it make a difference with any one recruit? Very possibly. But the snow we've had this year may have the same effect on some.

King, I agree. There are other reasons. But a program currently in total disarray is sure to give pause. I have always loved IU basketball and pains me to speak ill of our current situation. Coach Crean is a man of excellent character IMO. However, the current state of affairs I think are totally inexcusable. Put the wheels back on this thing and Beat Iowa!

We don't have anybody who could decommit at the moment, because we have no commits. Transfers will happen, regardless of who the coach is. The logic of fans is often far from reasonable.

My thing is the program being in "disarray" might only be seen by us. The kids who are looking at schools and being highly recruited might not be looking at it that way. Fans of programs generally seem to overstate how bad things actually are, though I am definitely not ecstatic about how things are going right now

And there is no doubt on that. I don't like how this season has went. I don't think CTC is the right long-term coach for IU. BUT, I don't expect this year to get him fired. I expect that as this team moves into next year, fans are going to see a lot of improvement, and I would not be surprised to see IU as a B1G conference contender next year. If we reach that point, there are many fans who are questioning now, who will be happy to keep him as a coach. There are two groups questioning CTC's future at IU at this point:

A: Those who have looked at the body of his work, see schematic and systematic problems with his coaching. They see him, generally, as a good coach, but not as a top level coach that can hang another banner. They see continually unaddressed flaws in his coaching. This group is less vocal during the good years, but their opinions are not really swayed by the successes.

B: This group may have some of the above, but they are largely moving in a different direction based on the last year. They are less ideological, and when IU shows improvement, they will be less inclined to change coaches.

Its a microcosm of any dissent movement in any area of human endeavor.

This topic is silly. This guy resurrected are program from the ashes. Has he forgotten how to coach after the departure of 5 pro players? Is he without fault? No, is he on the floor? No. I know you are tired of hearing it, but this season is a by product of youth. If these freshmen stay four years, you will be building a statue for CTC. Go HOOSIERS!

We can't keep bringing up how he resurrected the program does that give him a free pass? You really isn't much of an excuse anymore 25 games into the season. We should have seen signs of improvement by now right? I haven't seen any improvement from game 1 to game 25 just the same group of guys that turns the ball over 20 times a game with no purpose on offense.

He doesn't get a pass, but to suggest firing just one year after what he's done is absurd.

And I don't think it's fair to say the team hasn't improved. It's easy to look good against a Chicago State, but appearance against the Big Ten is different. It's like when people confuse athleticism for "talent." People confuse the team looking amazing against Cupcake U and not so amazing against a top 25 team as "not improving."

I'm not saying the team has made leaps and bounds, but you can't sit there and honestly believe they've gotten worse.

The team has played well in a few games but seem to take 10 steps back after those games. Who would have thought at the beginning of the year we would lose at Nebraska, at home to northwestern, at home to penn state, and get taken to the woodshed at purdue? Maybe they have improved like you said but I just haven't seen any signs.

I've been waiting for someone to bring this up (your first sentence Reb). I keep seeing comments that the current recruits will jump ship. Have those suggesting that forgotten that the 3 recruits we have are all signed? They can't just decommit. I'm not a rules expert, but I think if they decided to go elsewhere at this point they would lose a year of eligibility. So I'll go out on a limb and say it's pretty unlikely any of the 3 are actually considering jumping ship at this point.
