Jeff_Boy_Ardee Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 I am willing to give Alford a pass on the iowa situation because i dont know for sure what he knew and i dont know what control iowa officials told him to do. His first big time coaching gig also. It isn't like people dont make up rape cases all the time for stupid reasons so i cant judge him for taking a kids side he may have felt he trusted. I dont think his coaching record is up to par but that one serious incident i dont hate him for. Given iu past it should be considered a major liability and exclude him from being a option imoSent from my SM-G920V using BtownBanners mobile appYea, the rape incident aside, I just don't think he makes IU that much better. Like I've said before, if he didn't play at IU I don't think he would ever be mentioned. coonhounds, Yogi'sBicep, Btownclouds and 2 others 5 Quote

In particular, individuals affiliated with Athletes in Action, a religious organization, contacted the victim to seek an informal resolution of the matter by asking the victim to meet informally for prayer with the perpetrator. One of those individuals had a longstanding relationship with the basketball program and its coach, which included traveling with the basketball team and conducting voluntary chapel and Bible study activities for the team and staff." "Coach Steve Alford was asked for comments by the press numerous times in the Pierce matter. He was advised by Bob Bowlsby that he should show support for his player but indicate that he was awaiting the resolution of the legal matter. The distinctions required in the direction he received were difficult to draw, however, and on at least one occasion, the Big Ten media day, he stated with regard to Pierce that "I totally believe he's innocent. I believed it from Day 1 and I still believe it." No pass for Alford. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app Class of '66 Old Fart, Kepner, sirhoosierlot and 2 others 5 Quote

There is a truth to what he says, but not for the reasons why. It is true that Indiana has never hired a coach that was already at the top of his respective field. But Knight was hired somewhere between the and Byzantine Empire era. By the time Knight was hired, our legacy of weak kneed and bumpkin athletic directors bit us hard. Our facilities were still Byzantine....our rivals were out there building everything needed to recruit and compete in the modern era. Indiana now has everything they need to compete. Top 10 salary offer, Top 5 facilities, Top 1 passionate, national and supportive fanbase. What more can a coach who wants to hang banners want. Plus, if they pull it off, there will be a Mt Rushmore-esque statue carved in their likeness, immortalized for eternity. Quote

Tell the press you love coaching at IU, tell the Missouri AD that you will "give him an ear, but that a move is unlikely." Either that or he flat out said something that wasn't true because he was deer in headlights and wanted to protect the players. thebigweave 1 Quote

Double Down Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 Crean and Glass are both doing the right things in terms of managing the rumors, leaks and gossip. While someone is in your employ, you don't do anything that that public could get wind of that would point to any loss of confidence in them. I agree that a coaching move should be made after Indiana plays it's last game. The Mizz job isn't going anywhere. If Crean wants it, he'll get it whether it is tomorrow or a few weeks from now. In the meantime, in fairness to his players, it is smart to keep things quelled. theriverpilot, Maynard, thebigweave and 3 others 6 Quote
