TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

What if BS never comes?

Sure it is hard to find the next coach K but how hard is it to find the next Tom Crean? IF replacing Crean is not a big hurdle, then at some point if BS does not come Glass will either roll the dice on a replacement or stay the course.

Rolling the dice shows you at least care about national championships whereas staying the course could
Lead to apathy.

The big question is who do we realistically get if you fire Crean? You can't just act reckless with no plan in place. One name that hasn't been mentioned in awhile and could be an option would be Fred Hoiberg. He is likely to get fired from the Bulls and had some college success. Thoughts anyone??

Fixed.  Apathy has already started.

Didn't show up for me, what did it say?

I believe it was a quote from Crean, citing that Wisconsin was ranked by pomeroy as a top 10 team, in regards to experience, while also citing that IU is ranked in the 300's.

He posted the exact Crean quote then posted "#LosersLimp"

Hard pass. Even though he was set to fail in Chicago, it's honestly a lateral move for the most part.

If it's not Stevens, I'm really only interested in Dane Fife or the dude at Northwestern. Collins?

Is there really a chance Glass fires Crean after wins over UNC and Kansas? IU has played ONE conference game, albeit an ugly loss.. I'd say the seat gets hot if Crean misses the tournament or has an early exit. At this point, his job is safe I would think.

I think you accurately answered your own question:

Yes - there is really a chance, but because of the clean program, past few years of conference success, and quality wins this year, only under the conditions you described.

The buyout at $4 mil which soon drops to $1 mil has become an enabling factor that allows IU to move on if they so desire. After this season, CTC's contract has three years remaining. For a future four year recruit, that is relevant. Methinks that after this season, it will start to become "extend or not" decision territory.

If he's extended, it will probably be the first time in my life that I stop caring about IU basketball. I'm so sick of seeing the university I love settle for mediocrity and less of what they're capable of just because they're receiving a solid revenue stream. We as fans deserve so much more than what we're getting. But hey, let's load up on noncon cupcakes, win 20 games a year, and then blame it all on youth because we recruit like chickens with our heads cut off.

If it is true that a team takes on the personality of its coach, well... enough said.
What frustrates me is all the little things that Crean has let slide since he has been here. The times that bigs are bringing the ball down and it gets stolen, the times that the ball is passed to a person in a terrible spot and it gets stolen, our lack of ability to consistently feed the post, lack of a real plan on defense... all these things add up at the end of a game to be the tipping point when you aren't playing a team ranked in the 300's.

I have my #1 choice (BS) but for petes sake if he is not available you still make a change. Lets not be the definition of insanity.

Id argue that hiring another coach outside of maybe a three person dream hire short list would be the definition of insanity. Change for the sake of change isn't always good. At least with Crean we can be fairly confident of a few things:

1) Recruiting will be above average
2) We will have success in the B1G
3) We will make the tournament
4) We will win really big games on national television
5) We will have a high character team and a clean program

I don't see anyone out there currently worth the risk, but I also don't have all the resources and information available to find the right hire. Crean has the program operating at a very respectable level, and biding our time for the right hire could result in 30 plus years of positive return, instead of another 10 year coaching hire that leaves fans restless.

There's just nothing to discuss until March. Who was the last coach of a team with this much potential to be fired for a volatile non-conference performance that included two top-three wins and two sub-100 loses?

I have no connections, so I would never hear this, but would not be surprised to find out that Fred has started sending out feelers again. I disagree with the rampant accusations and hate towards Glass. I think he's navigated a extremely treacherous path driving this program and all of the other athletic programs forward. It can't be argued that both the basketball and football programs are experiencing far greater success than when he arrived.

I think this is a really good take in the situation

Is IUBB where we want it? Clearly not.

That being said, it's not a dumpster . Respectable is right. Granted we don't want respectable, we want to be competing for championships. Some could argue that respectable is mediocre and I couldn't argue with them but I think your right, changing just to change isn't the right thing to do. When the dream hire comes, go get them.

Thanks for the dose of reality.
