IPFW Post Game Thread

I was furious for the full 48 hours following this loss. It sucked all the texts I got from my non-Hoosier friends and my UK-alum younger brother. I went through every emotion including the typical "fire Crean" thoughts. Now with a clear mind, I am over the loss.

We have a talented team. I hate the saying "we will be fine." We might not be. However, I like our team. This loss represents a huge opportunity. Are we going to use this loss as a learning experience that every single game needs to be treated like it's a tournament game? Or will it be business as usual? I am excited to see how this team responds.

If the team does not respond and is poorly coached/prepared/motivated, we will take care of that after the season, whether that justifies the need for a coaching change or not. But until then, this team can be as good as it wants, or as bad as it wants. Many coaches have won with a lot less talent, is coaching the problem? Or is it our guys that do not have the right internal fire to win and are too distracted with that next step to the NBA? With UNC, L'Ville and Butler coming up, we will know very soon what this team is made of.

As far as these in-state games. I love them. They draw big IU crowds while giving us the opportunity to put road/neutral wins on our résumé. It supports in-state institutions.

I think we should schedule as many games against IUPUI, IPFW, Valparaiso, Butler, ND, ISU, and Ball State as we can. Honestly, our players and coaches need to be ready to play against teams who treat playing against us as their Super Bowl. We are Indiana. We should expect every team to be gunning to knock us off, to be circling the game against us on their calendar. I don't care if it's November/December, these games are great practice for how the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament are as a top seed (which is the expectation at IU), as well as games against lower tier B1G schools.

This loss in the big picture is probably a good thing. That doesn't mean we should be happy about it. And I'm not, it took me two days to get over it and actually write an opinionated post on here. But I guarantee you we'll come to play on November 30th at home against top-5 UNC. I agree with many of those who have said before, we need to schedule these games. Indiana State, Valpo, Fort Wayne, Evansville, we should play one or two of these games, (home or away, away could be a good thing) a year on top of the Crossroads. Add in a couple marquee matchups like the Armed Forces Classic, or do something like the Battle for Atlantis or the 2k Classic or something like that each year and I'd be happy. Part of the reason I think MSU is so good come the new year is that they suffer losses in the Non-Con season, against good teams and the occasional slip up, which prevents slip ups and lack of effort come January, February, and March. That being said, we must take care of MVS easily and then compete our asses off and get revenge against the stupid Tar Heels.

yeah, Bryant could be a guy that is great in college but bad in the NBA. I think he will just be eaten alive on the defensive end. Not sure I've ever seen a 6'10 255 kid with a 7'5 wingspan affect so little shots at the rim.

He has zero "short space quickness" at all either. He's good in the open floor but stopping and starting doesn't work well for him. Imagining him trying to guard a Boogie or Ant Davis or KAT is nightmare-inducing.

Because he was getting bodied in the paint by a bunch of scrubs whenever he did get the ball. Feeding him doesn't do any good when they keep throwing the ball back into his face when he goes up.

But yes, his lower body agility is a major detriment.

exactly, and he gives up deep post position all the time. Pick and roll is so prevalent in the NBA, slow centers just don't work these days.

Hey I agree! Not bc of this one game. Been saying this all along. Still too weak, Too uncoordinated and as my son calls him "goofy". Also while on topic, OG while improved. Not a locked either. Still a long way to go here

I realize that this is in the wrong thread so please move if need be. I like and can see Davis having a more successful career. Much better footwork! It's truly a shame he had to miss all of summer workouts

Haven't gotten around to this and hope no one cares at this point, but....

My two biggest fears coming into this game were revealed here. I already voiced the PG issue. I'm not sold. 

The second has less to do with Yogi the PG than it does Yogi the player. This team doesn't have a guy who can get their own shot when they need to. When teams slow down Indiana and they get into their half court set, it results in a lot of short shot clock offense. By that I mean under 10 sec. Now, I don't have a percentage on this- and you aren't going to get an accurate perspective tomorrow- but I'll see what I can come up with in more meaningful games. Also, someone will say "what about a play that develops late" and they're right, fail or success that needs to be taken into the equation. I'll cut those out, too. Still, there are tons of situations where exactly what I'm talking about occur and they are important especially in late-game situations...So that is the PROBLEM

Anyways, Yogi was that guy. The offense stalls in the half court (as they do in Crean's half-court system) and having a guy who can beat his man and create for himself becomes imperative. Yogi was that guy. Who is it now? What is the SOLUTION?

I know this...it isn't Rojo, JBJ, or OG. It just isn't who they are.

Maybe Newkirk if he takes a some steps, and quickly. Honestly, I don't see it.

Juwan...so versatile, but that just isn't him.

Cujo and Green...freshman and just not there yet. Green, in my mind, will be that guy but he isn't now and doesn't have that role...so no.

 

Who am I missing? Who can be that guy?

Crean hopes it was Blackmon. It can be against finesse defenders but definitely not against pit bulls.

Green or CuJo eventually. Need much better ball movement to find an open shooter.

We don't have great slashers on this team either. Our guards (except CuJo) are average speed. Newkirk is fairly fast but often out of control. Newkirk jumper is not likely to be consistent. He jumps 2 feet forward on his three point shot.

We are offensively challenged in the half court with this team in particular. Gotta move the ball quickly and get open looks for Roj, JB, CuJo. Need Bryant in post much more. Need Bryant to recognize the double much quicker. I like DDavis but he is green.

I think Crean keeps going to Blackmon in must shoot situations but he can't find space on his own.

It's a legitimate worry.

Honestly OG and TB are not the players we had hoped. If they had been this would be a lot less concerning.
