  1. It sucks because I really want to like Archie. I didn’t like Crean because he was goofy and kind of weird and was also really inconsistent as a coach. But I wanted to like Archie. I wanted him to be the guy to succeed at IU. I just don’t see any realistic scenario where that happens. We aren’t good this year, and next year will be even worse unless TJD miraculously returns. No real point in waiting another year for the inevitable.

  7. There’s a reason I don’t watch IU basketball anymore...... not a fair weather fan, just can’t stand the product that been given to us in year 4. This was the season I would judge Archie Miller and it’s a major fail. Unfortunately we are probably stuck with this for another couple of years. Just don’t enjoy wasting 2+ hours of my life watching uninspired game play and terrible game plans. On to the next..... coach! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

  8. If Dakich is right, and that’s a big if. I’m new to the Forum, and a young IU fan. I don’t hold a grudge against anyone, but Dakich is one of my least favorite people. I think he makes brash statements just for attention. Especially when I listen to his radio show. Again I don’t hate the guy but I just take everything he says with a grain of salt. And he could be right. I’m not sure.

  9. The problem I have with firing Archie (I'm an Archie guy obviously) is that there is no clear right answer out there that is realistic. Yes, people can reply with anyone is better than Archie, but we can't settle and or make a lateral move. Do we really want to return to the Indiana we expect (Final Four's) or do we just want to settle with winning and sometimes being ranked in the Top 25? Indiana needs a hire that is going to lead us to another banner. Anything else is just waisting our time. Of course I'd like to see us win game and be in the top of the B1G, but only if it's a coach that can get us to a title game and not just the elite eight. Brad Stevens is my only answer sadly.

  10. This thread is going to be 100% relevant and I feel like fans are lying to themselves if they think different. We all see the slow death coming. Beard is #1 for me but honestly I just want something different at this point. Can it really get any worse?

  11. They couldn’t get juiced enough to beat Purdue at home last year on the day Bob Knight made his return to the Hall. I don’t think there’s any bulletin board material out there that would get them fired up to play. For several years we’ve blamed it on a few players, if player X and Player Y just leave our problems will be fixed. Yet those guys are gone and our issues still exist. We just stink.

  12. Fair enough. Most do. Just don't expect Championships. Expect Sweet 16 rings and participation trophies. Those who win Championships and Titles consistently aren't squeaky clean. That's a fact. At this point in my fandom I care more about wins than how their attained.

  13. I keep hearing this and keep reiterating I don’t know what this really means. We spend (spent) more on recruiting than any program in the conference. We just invested tens of millions into renovating our arena. What is the university doing to prohibit our basketball team from being good? So we’re not writing checks for $9m/year? So what? The four coaches even worth that much aren’t leaving their current positions. It’s not a money issue. Should we be letting what happened at Louisville occur here? Should we have fake classes set up? Going to class isn’t a problem for our players, and it isn’t preventing our team from making free throws. Do we need to operate in the “gray area” more? Other successful programs are fine without going full bagman. Or do we just keep bad coaches an extra year or two too long? We haven’t landed the right coach. That’s it. Recruit well enough, develop your players, get some shooters and preach the fundamentals. For as difficult of a time this program has had the last 20 years, it’s not that complicated. You only need a handful of kids to make a program work. This isn’t football. I don’t care if the university administration isn’t as focused on basketball as Alabama’s is on football. They’re not actively working to sabotage the program. So RMK was the most powerful man on campus during his heyday? All that did was prevent him from getting fired earlier for abusing his players. “Yea but I heard they took some of our program’s money to build a new window in the Kelley school!” So what?! So our team had to eat chicken fingers for lunch a few days because of it instead of cordon bleu...all of a sudden to be successful we need five star meals and a private day spa in Cook Hall? This is still basketball, we still have more than enough to offer recruits, and still prioritize basketball more than the overwhelming majority of schools in the country. Get the right coach in the door and this goes away very quickly.

  14. I know my opinion doesn't mean a thing, but to me, it's going to have to be someone that still runs a clean(-er) program. I know that there is grey area, but I don't want to be associated with the ramifications of dirty play. I know some are totally fine with the pay for play, but personally, I prefer to keep it compliant.

  20. I haven’t beaten the drum on public forums. I believe there’s little benefit. However, when we continue to play uninspired ball against an in conference rival.. Archie has never defeated purdoodoo.. getting out recruited by them.. going to have to make a serious run to crack the top half of the Big Ten.. The biggest problem still isn’t the coach though. The biggest problem is the admin. What percentage of Btown Banners believes they’ll get fed up with this and actually make a home run hire? Yeah, there’s your problem Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

  21. I always find it interesting to throw out hopes and prayers in times likes these. I have been an Archie supporter, I have wanted him to be good and succeed here, it’s getting difficult, but my stance has mainly alwasy been you can’t fire him without a slam dunk lined up, so stay put and keep the faith. That being said, my list is pretty short on who I think is actual realistic and why. 1. Chris Beard - I think he’s the homerun hire. He is younger, runs an exciting system, he has shown some big time success, and the cherry on the top, he has ties to Bob knight. I do not think the last part is a requirement, but there’s a huge chunk of the fan base they still get excited in the pants when the name Bob Knight comes up or a coach that had ties to Bob Knight 2. John Belein - I believe the job was his originally but we went with Sampson. Which I think sampson would have us rolling right now but I digress. Belein is older but still has a good few years left. If we can get him for 4-5 years I think it’s a great get. He has proven he can do it in the big ten. He left basketball on a sour note, and I think he can bridge the gap and make IU a desirable place to coach again after he leaves, assuming he brings us success Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

In all seriousness if anyone mentions Chris Collins i personally move for an instant ban from the board. I’ll stick to who I think is realistic. Beard. If he says no, as questionable as it might be, Dane Fife.

  24. Honestly, it’s just me recognizing that I’m just an ordinary fan at the end of the day who can’t really do anything about it. I’m not a former player or a big donor so I don’t have any juice to squeeze. Getting mad about the games just puts me in a bad mood and doesn’t do anything to fix things, so what’s the point. I was big on the tank train during Crean’s last year because I thought we could land a home run hire to bring IU back. I thought Archie was going to be that guy. But it hasn’t worked out, and we’re 4 more years away from our past. Maybe we get things turned around. I hope that we do because I love IU and I loved my time at IU. Wouldn’t trade it for anything. But if we don’t, it is what it is.

  25. That's the big thing: you can't be run of the mill and boring. Armaan IMO has been the single good story this year. TJD is good. Rob and Al.....shrink. Galloway is a nice role player on a team that has shortcomings so much that it's hard to field a role player.

  37. I believe Dakich's assertion is correct in that IU wanted de-emphasize the basketball program so that it would not overshadow the university. There have been a number of stories, articles and books over the last 20 years that have chronicled the end of the Bob Knight era that have pointed to this assertion. I believe Myles Brand (IU's president at the time) was even quoted saying as much. Coach Knight had so much success at IU that allowed him to do pretty much whatever he desired. When IU was winning and the headlines were positive this was okay. But when the wins were fewer and the controversies were more frequent it was apparent the university didn't want such negative attention, especially over non-academic endeavors. Thus, they wanted to "de-emphasize" Indiana Basketball so that IU's academics and research would be the focus of the public when they thought about IU. How that has fared for IU is debated to this day. Of course, this was 20 years ago and most of the administrators have since moved on. Is it different now? I don't know. But I believe it was like this for sure in 2000. Dakich is most certainly brash and he clearly enjoys attention. But I have no doubts that he's correct in that IU (at least 20 years ago) chose to de-emphasize basketball and hiring big-name coaches. It's clear they wouldn't want someone who could have so much power that Bob Knight possessed. The thing is... I don't believe there's a coach out there who EVEN COULD command as much attention as Knight did. So the point is moot as far as I am concerned.

  40. Do they like him? My sons trainer worked out Armaan and Rob last summer. I asked him about them in general when I found out he was working with them. He said the usual(good kids, hard working, etc) and ended by saying " I can tell you they don't like Archie, they both said he's a d*ck!" I didn't ask he offered it.

  41. I honestly watched maybe 8 minutes of the entire game, glad I didn't waste more of my time. When I turned it on in the first half, Purdue hit three 3s and maintained a 5 pt lead, and was discouraged they were having a hot start. In the 2nd half, I stopped at about the 10 minute mark when they went back up by 8. You could just tell it was over by then. Honestly, we're trying to be a program that chases national championships, but we can't even beat our shitty rivals who are a complete nothing-burger on the national stage. What a gut check.

  42. Bingo. And I don't think our fan base gets that. So to get those top names, you have to throw more than money at them.....you have to throw MONEY at them, because they can already earn big cash in more attractive places. Let's face it, most of us are living in a fantasy world where IU was what it was in 1980s. Fact is that we have players on this team that weren't alive the last time IU was in the final four and they couldn't even tell you who coached that team. So you are going to have to bring in a great hire that isn't a Brad Stevens or Billy Donavan type....they aren't coming here. Let's face it, in football we got lucky with Tom Allen -- on the surface, that was not a good hire and we did not do the coaching search we should have. So we can either count on getting lucky or invest in getting it right.

  46. So, most of the best coaches in college and pro basketball? Yeah, I'd be looking at them too. I've been an Archie defender for a long time. I'm not defending him anymore, but I'm not advocating for him to be fired either. I'm way beyond solution-oriented thinking and am fully giving into nihilism. I don't think anything can save this program. All through the Crean years I thought "all the parts are in place, if we could just get a good coach, someone who could coach defense, we'd be unstoppable." We hired exactly the kind of coach I wanted and these are the results. I don't care if we fire Archie, but I don't think anyone we hire will be any better, either. The idea that we'll have our pick of the top tier coaches at all levels of the sport is laughable. In reality, our talent pool will be either a bunch of mid-major guys, or Alford. And if we hire Alford, I'm out. So at this point, it's status quo, or nothing. Hence the nihilism.
