2017 IUBB recruiting

Recommended Posts

Was he a 5 star when he committed?

Regardless that team had 2 next years team will have none.

At the end of the day we are both passionate about recruiting and the Hoosiers we just got a different view on certain areas. What I like about this place is discussing a topic and seeing different point of views. Good discussion brass

Crean doesnt do well without plenty of talent. We are coming off a successful season from a talented team. Should have another one this year. People are rightfully concerned about this class because we all know what happens when we lack talent or a balanced roster.

Fwiw.

Yogi was composite 21- 5 star

Troy was composite 53- 4
Star.

CuJo was in the 80's. 4 star.

These numbers get confused.

Sake of reference.

Vonleh was composite 11- 5 star.

Blackmon was composite 20- 5 star

Bryant was composite 20- 5 star.

Composite is a 247 thing that takes the averages from all services. ESPN had cujo rated higher then everyone else at 40

I guess I would disagree that next years team will lack talent. In my opinion I don't call 6 top 120 players a lack of talent and 3 of those players being upper class man. Balanced roster would be the bigger concern in my opinion

Yeah I think our lack of bigs ready beyond Morgan and Davis is troubling. Going small in B1G scares me.

You notice that this is really one of the first seasons where people don't seem to be calling for Crean's firing? His perceived job stability will only aid in recruiting, and he continues to get guys to the NBA. A Final Four at Indiana would really help.

He's been laying the foundation. You want recruiting results like that of Arizona, UK, Duke, Syracuse, and Louisville? Those coaches have been stable in their position for many many years, sending guys to the NBA, and winning. The kind of consistent recruiting you want takes a lot of foundation.

Not trying to start a fight but it didn't take those schools close to the amount of time to build the foundation. Even if we remove the first 3 years. We are better off coming to the realization that Crean will never recruit at that level. There is no precedent and nothing to suggest we are trending in that direction. With that said, I can live with classes like the ones we've had the past 2 seasons. It keeps us relevant as long as we can continue to find diamonds in the rough. Unfortunately that's a very risky approach, like betting nest eggs on penny stocks.

Not trying to start a fight but if u take away the first 3 years like u stated 2 of the 6 remaining classes he recruited were top 10 classes nationally (4 and 8). The other class are pretty ordinary at 21,22,and 29(Bryant, juwan, and og that one has worked out well for us). We might not be recruiting at a high level of late but to say crean will never recruit at a high level when he already has had 2 top 8 classes is not backed by facts. Just my opinion

Two of his better classes were underrated by the recruiting services.

2010 - Sheehey, Oladipo
2015 - Bryant, Morgan, OG

I'll take those classes any day of the week. They'll go down as the glue classes, IMO.

Just viewing individual classes can be misleading sometimes that's why I think roster balancing is more important then individual class rankings unless your program goes full one and done route. Looking back at some other teams ranking that have been ahead of iu's is interesting. I would much rather had iu's 29th ranked class with Bryant, og and juwan than Ohio states top 5 class in 2015 that only has Lyle left to show for it.

Last year's class was not a glue class, it was a superstar class

Yeah this. Bryant was a huge get and he paid off. OG was a huge upside type guy, and we saw flashes of it last year, hopefully Morgan can stay healthy, he could be special in his third year when we call on him more.

I'm just having a hard time understanding the recruiting gripes on Crean. A lot of it seems to be coming from this recruiting season and we aren't even to the early signing period yet.

Others may feel differently but my concern with Crean's recruiting historically has been large classes with lots of transfers, unbalanced rosters, some complete waste of scholarships, and an inability to build off if success.

That's not to say he hasn't had some recruiting success or that it's been terrible but it's still kind of all over the place.

At this point we should be able to focus on a smaller number of recruits, hone in and close a few of our top targets each year.

I have been in the group questioning whether Crean is the guy to take us to another level and to win consistently. That being said I think he can improve his odds by building teams based on his strengths. 3 and 4 stars that can develop into stars and that will generally stay 3 years or so.

When he spends a ton of time on guys and misses it is concerning because 1 bad class is hard to overcome.

It seems when he finds 3* guys early they tend to be workers who will develop. When we find them late (Holt, April, Max) they end up not fitting as well

To be fair if you put Holt in this environment as opposed to the one he was in I would be willing to bet he would be a stud. His issues weren't court related.
