Hoosierfan2017 Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 For me earlier this season it was a combination of the quality of our out of conference schedule and the way they screwed up the student tickets by expanding GA to the balcony. Either walking 20 minutes both ways from my apartment or driving and dealing with the awful traffic to likely sit in the balcony and watch a game against a school I've never heard of just wasn't very appealing. A lot of people that I have talked to feel the same way. I would rather head to the bars with some friends to watch. I'm looking forward to the Big 10 games, but with LSAT studying taking up most of my time these days I just don't have the time to wait in the GA line for a few hours before tipoff to avoid the nosebleeds. I preferred my first two years at IU where we got a couple GA tickets and then guaranteed seats for the rest of our games. College kids nowadays just have too many sources of entertainment IMO. Like has been said above me, this has been a problem for many colleges across the country, not just at IU. It'll probably take a truly special team to get the students to consistently fill Assembly Hall again. Quote
Tom White Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Exactly so if people know their not going to get their early, people won't go because they know they are going to be in the balcony. I was happy with the previous system. Didn't like the expanded GA section because in the balcony you don't feel like your in the "student section"In the balcony, you don't even feel like you're in the same building. I love Assembly Hall, but I absolutely HATE the balcony. I am amazed that no one has ever fallen from up there. Think about the total number of people who have sat there over all the years, and it really surprises me that it has never happened.....and I pray it never does. Disclaimer and Clarification: I am not a student. My years at IU were before the hall was even around. Defenserocks28 1 Quote

Trish Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 If we were #1, this would be different. It's cold here, Kilroys has great game day specials, along with Brothers. It's a long walk in the cold to assembly hall for most students. Quote
coonhounds Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Why is everybody down on the balcony? It's the Hoosiers be happy you get to be there and make noise. Personally I prefer balcony overl upper lower seats because you can't see the scoreboard screen and your still a mile away. JaybobHoosier, mamasa, ThompsonHoosier and 2 others 5 Quote

The balcony at Banker's Life is way higher and steeper. coonhounds, mdn82, mamasa and 1 other 4 Quote

I hope they give more tix to the public. The student section is constantly changing in size year to year. I have no problem with students watching the games from KOK. I just hope they release some tix to people that want to go. coonhounds 1 Quote
VO5 Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 As a senior, really disappointed with the student attendance/enthusiasm during games. No offense to the out of state kids or Chicagoland area, but it feels like most kids I talk to in the student section from those areas barely know who our players are. They come because it's an excuse to drink and socialize and cheer at the highlight plays. Feels like there is no organization with cheering, chants, etc. It makes for a much less exciting experience and completely pales in comparison to freshman year (and yes, I know we were damn good that year. Still no excuse for students to not come/not care) JaybobHoosier, hoosiers25 and mdn82 3 Quote

Different times for sure. I remember IU games as much as anything from college. But, I am probably different. I just enjoyed being part of creating that environment. VO5 and ALASKA HOOSIER 2 Quote
Popular Post Scooter D Posted January 21, 2016 Popular Post Posted January 21, 2016 FFS..."It's cold here"..."it's a long walk in the cold"? Sorry...but those are not valid excuses. I saw the empty balcony last night started yelling at the TV and the Hoosiers were up like 20+. When I was in school, I only got 6 tickets per season and only 4 were Big 10 season...you can bet that not even the threat of ebola would have kept me away from the Assembly Hall on game day. I was jacked just to be in the building. I remember sitting in the last row of the balcony for a non-conference game and loving every single second of it. As a out of state alum (from Indiana), it is sad and very disappointing. You know what to do to combat the cold? Go get some wings and some beers and it will warm you right up. I did it many many times and I didn't freeze and am here to tell you about it. Makes me sick! ThompsonHoosier, Alford Bailey, HoosierAloha and 8 others 11 Quote

Old Friend Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 We used to get 4 games and 4 games only. Place never had an empty seat. When you're mediocre, you have problems like this. Sad to me, because it used to be a rarity to get a main level seat for an IU Basketball game. You got one main level, one endzone, and two balcony seats, and that was it. In the late 1980's and early 1990's. "It was cold" is not an excuse. ALASKA HOOSIER, Hoosier DaDa and Scooter D 3 Quote
JaybobHoosier Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 It is very disappointing. I get that the athletic department may have screwed things up some, but how can people complain about going to IU games? It's too cold? Tell that to the students who were going to camp out for the IU vs UK game who had it a lot colder. I live here in St. Louis, and hate that I am lucky to make one game a year or two. Just don't get all the complaining about attending IU games in the balcony. We've all done it, and it's fine. I do agree about the generation talk, I'm at the older end of it but it is so true. Naturalhoosier Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 It was sad to see those empty seats when the sideline reporter spoke about the angle of the balcony. I was embarrassed to see that. Are those student GA seats? ALASKA HOOSIER and JaybobHoosier 2 Quote

It just shocks me as it would never have been a consideration to not go to a game when we had a chance. I am honestly still stunned by it. JaybobHoosier 1 Quote

8bucks Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 We used to walk over from Wilkie to the games. Plenty of balcony seats in the package but it was packed up there. It was cold back in the 80's too. JaybobHoosier and jmsgws 2 Quote
Alford Bailey Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 I'll never understand this generation. You got to school at IU but don't want to attend games? Cut the student section in half and sell those tickets to the average fan. mdn82, 8bucks and HoosierTrav 3 Quote
