In Crean's defense (not that I want to be defending him), he learned from Izzo. Izzo hasn't been the toughest in terms of handling these situations either. He's had his fair share of player indiscretions with minimal punishment.

I would buy this if he hasn't been a head coach at a division 1 level for 15 years and an assistant for 10 before then. I do agree it has backfired but establishing a discipline program in year 9 is 8 years too many. Let's be honest Hanner would still be on the team if Crean really had it his way.

I don't think it's excessive punishment because after May 15 these guys had to know they were basically on zero tolerance. 

 

The other thing though that I believe is that if Crean was thinking about 10 games as you suggested and as I actually thought was going to be about right, I'm guessing that President McRobbie's words changed everything. After that, this outcome was almost scripted.

I don't think President McRobbie went far enough.   Crean should have lost his job.   When does it stop??   Enough, already.

Hutch, I didn't hear the particulars of McRobbie's comments, but with all things considered, I just don't feel that the punishment fits the crime here.

 

It's absolutely overkill for this single, isolated instance. But we are dealing with an ongoing, seemingly unending stream of this stuff. At some point you have to take strong action. Holt was in the wrong place at the wrong time twice - the Davis incident last Halloween night, and in the parking lot with the vodka last week.

 

At some point somebody had to send a message. Holt just happened to be the example for the entire team.

This seems to be true... but after all that's happened over the past several years, every one of these kids should know what's expected and should find the intestinal fortitude to do it. Good choices = good outcomes. Poor choices =  poor outcomes.

I've been awfully quiet this offseason, but I guess I will come out of hiding for this.
I completely agree with dismissing Holt, hopefully ( but not likely) this will get the other players to realize they better get their shit together. Also disappointed this happened with a couple of big recruits on campus.
