(2016) SG Grant Gelon commits to IU

Recommended Posts

How are his opponents? I mean, Max had great range until he played in college.

He played his freshman year.   People have to stop judging recruits by what they do as freshmen.   Galen won't do much as a freshman.   He may not do much as a sophomore.   But he'll be a hell of a team mate as a senior, and I'd bet you 10 to 1 he has plenty of range and plenty of points from behind the line by then.

The Wisconsin comment is coming next...

They spent less than 10% what Indiana did on recruiting last season, and less than $65,000 overall.  They win every year with smart players who understand and play within Ryan's system, regardless of where they're ranked; and they know what they're getting when they walk on campus.  As a freshman, Kaminsky was not a very strong Big Ten player.  Same with Dekker.  He could shoot, but that was about all.   Wisconsin's formula is proven and consistent.  Anyone is free to mock it or predict the comparison.   Doesn't make it wrong.

Do we have Bo Ryan as a coach? No. We can't do what they do. Plain and simple.

I'm really happy for this kid! A Hoosier that can stroke it and really wants to be here. I get so frustrated sometimes when it feels like we have to beg 5 star kids to commit, I understand they don't have the same love for #iubb as me but I just want to tell them It's Indiana!!! When kids come down to like NC State or UNLV and IU, I'm like really? Lol. Welcome GG! #GoHoosiers

Sam Dekker was a 99 rated recruit and and No. 12 overall nationally. Keep feeding that narrative and maybe it will come true though.

Weird how as they've gotten better players over the last handful of years they've gone further in the tourney. That's not taking anything away from Bo Ryan.

Lot of head scratching and concern because our first commit isn't one of the elite we've been recruiting.   First of all, there's a lot of roster openings for 2016 and there will be again in 2017.  Secondly, this young man isn't blind to who else we're recruiting and has to know that playing time could be sparse and is therefore more than likely a 4-year player something many of the 4 and most of the 5 star players won't be and I'd much rather have someone like 2G taking a roster spot than some of the other less notables CTC has recruited tying up schollys.  Thirdly, I don't think a 4 or 5 star recruit will be scared off because we've gotten a commitment from 2G.  The bigger concern to me is the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, commitments for 2016.  We do need some triples and home runs and not a bunch of singles.  Sorry for throwing in a baseball analogy but speaking of baseball everybody keeping tabs on Schwarber I hope.

Not to be pedantic, but hitting a single in baseball has minimal statistic affect on the next batter's likelihood to hit a double. Building a team is pretty dependent on kids knowing who they'll be playing with.

Again....why does it matter where he was ranked?   This is a paper battle you're trying to win.  Dekker did nothing more on the floor his freshman season than Grant will do for Indiana.  He was mostly a shooter.  I think he played more than Grant will (much because of Ryan's need for speed on the perimeter defensively), but he took about 7 shots per game, more than half of them from distance.   And, we have no idea yet where Grant will end up in the rankings.   I'm doing something far different than feeding a narrative; but I'll make you a deal.  I'll keep "feeding it" if you keep telling yourself that rankings after a kid's junior season are relevant to outcome when he's in college or to whether or not Indiana will be able to recruit other kids.

On this we agree.   But you watched Roth and Hulls play pretty significant roles in Crean's offense, and this kid's bigger than both.   We shall see.

If Matt Roth was cloned and available for a six man IU class, I'd take him in a heartbeat. I hope that GG is a Matt Roth clone.

Are you being serious? Dekker was one of the best freshmen in the Big Ten as a freshman. It will be a big shock of Gelon gets to that level. But hey he is from Indiana
