(2016) SG Grant Gelon commits to IU

Recommended Posts

So, are you ok with zero graduation rate?

yes. It college sports is now a business. If kids choose to graduate then they graduate. I don't want "Wisconsin" success. I want "Kentucky" or "Duke" or "Kansas" success. I want to win. I want to see kids put in the NBA.

Could not disagree more. These kids play for Indiana University. If you want IU mentioned in the same ilk as UK or UNC, I can't attempt to reasonably debate this.

No kids play for Tom Crean. Kids commit to coaches not schools. Calipari could get Top 50 kids to go to Incarnate Word. It isn't because of Incarnate Word. It's because of Calipari.

The school absolutely helps and there is no argument otherwise. Cal could not recruit at his level at Incarnate Word, there is 0 exposure.

Kentucky is helping Cal recruit no different than Indiana is helping Crean recruit (and it is, he didn't recruit at this level at Marquette).

Well sure it is helping. They have money. But kids would follow him without a care in the world.

Even Cal would have a hell of a time to get top 50 players interested in Incarnate Word. If he recruited at a high level there not even the NCAA could turn a blind eye.

I just don't understand why the order in which kids sign makes any difference at all,

I don't understand why the order wouldn't make a difference.

The kid isn't just committing to the school or even to a coach, he's committing to a team. And next year, people expect just under 50% of that team to be this recruiting class. So, when you're on the trail you have to sell the whole team. You think Bryant would be coming here if we didn't have Yogi and Troy on the court? A strong core helps you sell the class. Then you're telling the next recruit "Picture it, you and Harry Giles coming through that tunnel. I've already got Harry, now I just need you" instead of "Well, so if you come then I definitely have like, 1 5-star guy for next year"

We had a one and done guy in Vonleh and look where that got us. When the going got tough at the end of the year he just sat out because the name on the front of the jersey didn't mean anything to him. We were just a semester and a half pit stop until the NBA. I want guys who are honored to put on the candy stripes. We can have success without following the Kentucky model, we proved that in 2012/2013. We only made it to the Sweet 16 but that wasn't because we lacked the talent. I would find it hard to feel any real connection to our team if we just cycled in a new crop of 5 star recruits every season. Sure Kentucky wins a lot of games every year but how good can it really feel for all the fans? Their players are mercenaries.

Their fans love it. They're winning.

I don't doubt it. I don't have anything against one and dones. If Harry Giles, Rawle Alkins and Thon Maker all called up Crean tomorrow morning and said they want to play for IU next year I'd probably have an aneurysm from the excitement. I just don't want to see that become our primary recruiting strategy.

if we can keep getting that and win then we'd love and Crean would be able to keep his job.

so you would be so excited to land top talent you would have an aneurysm but it would only be that cool if we did it once. Right? If we got top talent every year you would be pissed, right?

No. Calipari's a shady guy and I'd wager that some shady deals have brought top talent to Kentucky. I don't want us to sacrifice our integrity to bring in 5-star players every year. A balance where we have a mix of experienced upperclassman and talented freshmen/sophomores, like this year, is what I want to consistently see from IU.

The problem is, that we landed him and not Kyle Guy. Crean is a lame duck coach and most of the State knows it. We need a big season.

This made me laugh. Cream is not a lame duck coach. He has a season like he should, then he will be fine. If not, then he will be in trouble.

It's just one season though, at this point I don't give a crap about one good season.  He's already shown he can't sustain it or build on it, that's where we should be at now.

This might be an indication that's he's changing his recruiting methods and looking for B-Ball players and not freak athletes as his growth players. It looks like this young man might stay 4 years and contribute years 3/4. Who knows but I like shooters from Indiana, so I'm happy with the pickup. Typically these kids will be a weapon and have the IQ to help/not hurt in other areas. Like a lot of people have stated... Butler type recruit that I hate watching play for the Bulldogs.
