(2016) PG Devonte Green to INDIANA

Recommended Posts

I don't think he was questioning his talent, probably just curious (as am I) what class he is in.

Yeah no ill intent at all. Some wondered why he was not getting more attention via the rankings and I wondered if his competition played a part. Seems like AAU is where kids find a chance to perform against higher competition and if he did not do as well there as he did in HS then maybe that played a part

Was just asking though out of curiosity.

I think him being only 6'1" and not a true point guard is one of the main reasons he's lower in the rankings

Shooter and Slasher. Athletic and committed to defense. Not sure what else we can ask for. Ratings aren't right here. And I'm usually a big proponent of rankings. Great senior season. Lots of winning for DD and DG. Gotta like that too.

I'm baffled at his ranking. Baffled. He passes the eye test and the paper stats test. Has played well with and against elite talent... Not sure what more they are looking for. DG is the type of PG who wins big in cbb. Glad we got him. I hope he's ready for the bright lights and all of the pressure that can be thrown a young ballers way. If he is, he's going to have the opportunity to prove a lot of people wrong.

Devonte was named the 2016 All-Long Island Boys Basketball Player of the Year.  He's listed at 6'2" and 165 lbs. so he'll need to add some weight and muscle.  The brief bio also has the following:  "At the start of his lengthy high school career, he was known as Danny Green’s little brother. But when it was over, he was simply known as Devonte. Green averaged 20.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.7 steals per game for Long Island’s best team. He finishes his career with 2,683 points, fourth in New York State history."

Now that's an impressive statistic.

Started varsity in the 7th grade.

Question...  Has anyone seen this kid?   I have not....  Curious as to why a kid who can put up numbers like these in new York is a 3* player.  What's he missing?  JBJ was ranked higher and put up great high school numbers; but his defense is "bad."   Not comparing, just making an observation.   Is he a college ready guard?  Saw above someone said he can be our 2 guard next season; but I'm always skeptical of freshmen and leery of high expectations unless they're McD's all Americans or have college ready bodies.  It's a big leap from beating 16 year old high school kids to 22 year old college men.

Long Island isn't really a hot bed for basketball. To give you an idea, Dr. J is undoubtedly the greatest LI'er to play basketball. #2 is a tossup between Tom Gugliotta and Wally Szczerbiak. Besides Devonte's brother, I can't think of another guy that was ranked high or went to a traditional power college program in recent times. From the little I've seen mainly from clips, I think its realistic that he can be what Rojo was his freshman year.

Hopefully, the depth we have at guard with RoJo, JBJ, and Newkirk will give Green and CuJo some time to develop as freshmen. I was critical that JMor and OG wasn't getting enough time early in the season but looking back they were brought along nicely. If this can be done with CuJo and Green that could be key to provide depth late in the season.

I honestly believe Green will be our most impactful freshmen next year. That is unless TB leaves then I think De'Ron will almost have to start. I love De'Ron and think he will be a NBA player when its all said and done. I know that's not a huge stretch, but I think he will exceed his ranking if he does start next year. If TB comes back though I think Green will be an instant offense guy and a good defender from day one. He's our Victor/OG in this class. He won't get 1st round consideration after his freshmen year like OG but impact wise I think he will do the most with his minutes. I think Curtis Jones has all B1G potential as a junior, so I'm not selling him short. Crean is great at developing guards and wings. Crazy thing is he is starting to develop bits just as well. Cody, Noah, TB, and OG is sort of a big, but that is a great resume. He does more with his bigs than Self has lately which says a lot and Self's have been ranked a lot higher.
