I want Tom Crean to stay

Recommended Posts

He did recruit a replacement, a clone even, in Luke Fischer.

I don't think Crean is the right coach, but I also agree that he's been the victim of more than a few strokes of bad luck.

And I have heard stories about why Fischer left that could easily be placed at the feet of Crean. I agree, there's been some bad breaks, but he's a horrid game coach, and has failed miserably in terms of recruiting to meet the needs and weakness of his teams.

There is so much negativity here right now, I just wanted to make it clear not everyone is screaming for a coaching change. Not trying to troll, just wanted to say I am not a fan of pulling the plug and start from scratch again.

Add 4 frontcourt guys to this current team and we will be fine. Devin, OG, Morgan, and likely Bryant.

I trust Crean is not happy with how this season finished. And I'm sure he is working to remedy that.

I couldn't agree more. I think Tom Crean has done a lot for this program and will continue to move this program forward.

In what way?

Fundamentally terrible on defense; don't keep their hands up, "ball-you-man" is a foreign concept, many times getting caught flat footed instead of keeping a good stance.

And he's never had a particularly good team at limiting turnovers, not just from playing fast but just careless bonehead mistakes that a disciplined team would limit.

Are you advocating to leave scholarships unfilled instead of oversigning?

That would be an interesting approach.

On occasion, yes. Or award it to a walk-on for a season - especially if you are working on a recruit that you absolutely must have. I would have no problem with that from time to time. It's more honest than oversigning by 2, 3 or 4 players and then having to force kids out of the program to make room for them. It's called integrity.

My question is How close have you followed this regime for the past 7 years? I have followed very closely and made these predictions and claims far in advance of what is happening. I have talked to inside sources about Crean's demeanor and likeability.

Do I think we can be good next year with Bryant and key returnees? Hell yes!

Do I want an every 3 year program either no??

Recruiting has dropped off a cliff, so that every 3 year trend may not even return.

So much I could go into, but yes we could be really good next year with the right pieces IN SPITE of Crean. Scary thought!!!

Oh probably not as connected as you if you are an insider. But I've attended or watched every game. I read peegs, ITH, btownbanners, hoosier scoop, crimson quarry, hoosier huddle and Osterman at the Star. My little brother is on campus and i listen to dakich a few times a week. I'd like to think I'm well learned.

I'm not in the prediction business, it doesn't pay.

IMO, you're half right. He did a lot to resurrect the program. But at this point, he's the epitome of the Peter Principle.

The Stockholm syndrome some fans have toward Crean is comical.

It's the same story we've all heard. It's still a bad break.

I'm in an odd limbo. I get both sides I really do. We had the #1 team 2 years ago albeit we underachieved. But my lord Coach built a very good team and yes he got Zeller, Vic, CWat, and others. Those were his "gets". But goodness he has no grasp on roster balance. He constantly recruits wing players and never seems to go get solid post players. He has gotten 2 monster post players which was great but none that are 4 year guys. We keep on this path and we will never sustain. But we cut ties and we set back a few years. LIMBO

That team confuses me as well. He clearly knows how to assembly an experienced and balanced roster. What's going wrong now that's preventing him from doing it again?

credit!

If you have followed that closely and are still in favor of Crean being our leader then more power to you.

I'm not sure what would have to happen for him to become an every year contender.

To me Crean is like playing the lotto. He has potential of giving a MAJOR payoff, but generally his results are of the losing variety.

His ability to occasionally land a 5 star and occasionally (very occasionally) find a diamond in the rough are his saving graces. You just can't count on it because it is sporadic and appears to lack a surefire plan.

Thats an odd statement. You feel like assistant coaches and recruits who committed to Crean would stay to a great enough extent we wouldn't be starting over?

Spin it how ever you need to. Bottom line is what happens in this program is currently ON Crean - good, bad or indifferent. Unfortunately, there has been very little good beyond resurrection from the abyss that Sampson created.

I liken this situation to Bill Lynch and the FB program. Bill was a nice guy, who got stuck with a pretty raw deal (Hoeppner's untimely passing). But Bill was not and never would be "The Guy" for the program. Neither is Crean.

So Luke should have been cool with being locked out of his room while his teammates and their homies were smoking weed and stealing his stuff? Especially after going to Crean and nothing being done about it?

Crean botched that situatiin, sorry that's not bad luck.

On a different IU board some were talking with a UK fan about what they'll do when Cal does eventually leave.  Their answer was basically keep trying until we get the right guy.

Completely different mindset from "well, we could do worse" stuff we see about Crean.

Yes. The world didn't end when Mike Davis wasn't our coach anymore.
