Tom Crean Update from Fred Glass

Recommended Posts

"Coach Crean has five years on his contract," Glass said. "I don't expect him to go anywhere, and I don't want him to go anywhere."

I never heard he'd be fired...so this statement is a bit of a glimmer of hope for those wanting Crean out.

But I've been honest with everyone who has PM'd me lately in that I haven't heard anything for awhile. That could mean a number of different things but I'm beginning to believe Crean will be back. 41 may very well be more informed here, though.

Agree. I can see it both ways, but my gut says he's gone. Too many signs in my opinion. Next week will be interesting.

I believe this is horrible news but I will hold onto the glimmer of hope some of you still have he will be gone. To see this program continue down this same path in year 8 feels just like a gut punch. As I have said numerous times, I would take any B1G coach and would consider all in D1 over Crean. I have never seen him outcoach one opponent, and then I keep hearing more of the same from Glass. I hope they both leave as a package deal. Hurts even worse watching all the great teams and coaches; we should always be in the equation.

Those of you that think that this release by Glass was an endorsement are, in my opinion, being extremely naive. "Tom Crean will be the coach next season" would have been an endorsement. Anything else? I'm with 41.

Agreed. If it were a guarantee Crean was coming back, Glass would've just said he'll be our coach next year.

That line right there scares me.

Just curious, what's Glass' contract situation?

"Cool Dad" doesn't care so long as he has the best seats in the Hall.

So is the story basically that Crean is looking at other openings and if he finds the right one he is gone? Any hints on which programs he might be looking at?

Honestly, all the anti-Crean people should be encouraged by that statement.

That was a non-update if there ever was one.  He put something out at 5:00 on a Friday night that did nothing but reiterate what he said a month ago.  IMO this looks like it was meant to appease certain coaches out there who would have an interest an IU if there was an opening.

An opening not created by a firing.  Just let it all play out.

Yep, just what I was thinking. If Crean leaves for another job it doesn't look like he was forced out, because the AD supported him...and that will encourage potential coaches that IU may want to replace Crean.

This comment is a very non descript acceptance by Freddy on Creans future. He is biding his time and seeing what Thon and Thomas do IMO. If we lose both, i see a possible buyout after July 1st. I, as much as I want to, will not speculate on the future of Crean. Other teams are already using the Crean wont be there "montra" to lure away recruits. You have to sever the head to kill the snake... If Crean goes, so should Glass IMO. If I had my druthers they would both hit the bricks and I.U. rebuild, with a coach and AD that want to make INDIANA relevant again. Love Creans 100% grad rate! I want to have that and eat my cake too... I won't pick that poison cause thats all we got from a recruiting standpoint nowadays.

Every PR firm in the country would tell you if you need to put out a press release that people won't like, don't send it until 5:00pm on a Friday. A lot of people won't see it, many others won't be as focused because it's Friday night.

Right. And no one will be in the office to take angry phone calls until Monday. The hope is that a two day cooling off period decreases the number of those calls, ands lessens the emotions.

I think Fred's press release merely confirms that mediocrity is the new norm for IU basketball.  I think it also sends a signal that there is little pressure from the Trustees for a termination.  I'm not happy about it but I think we have to accept that CTC is the head coach for another year.  I'm desperately trying to find a ray of sunshine in the whole situation and damn it's hard.  But, in 2013-2014 we were a turnover machine and we dramatically improved in that area this past season.  Maybe the same magic will work on our defense and rebounding, either one of which could mean a couple of more victories next season.

My gut tells me Crean will be back and that Glass has deluded himself into thinking Crean is actually a good coach.  Probably have to get rid of Glass to get a new coach IMO.

And holy crap, START achieving those results?  START?  What the hell has this been, a 3 million a year trial period?  If that's the case there should be a monument built to remind people of the stupidity of that contract.

Agreed
