Tom Crean Update from Fred Glass

Recommended Posts

Half the team would jump ship. Even brad Stevens (who seems to be the new Jesus on this site) couldn't coach a team of walk ons to a championship.

You don't let the chance of players leaving force your hand. We've done that before, it ended with Mike Davis coaching here despite no experience.

How dare we expect to compete for the conference and make the NCAAs every year. The audacity of us to expect this program to compete on a national scale. Yep, totally our fault that Crean has only proven himself to be a mediocre coach.

If only this program offered a coach everything needed to win at a high level. Oh, wait a minute, it does.

Maybe there's a reason we have the same criticisms of Crean that Marquette fans did when he left there.

Preach!

We are nowhere near Glass own expectations. One B1G title, Glass wants multiple, and no deep tourney runs or National Championships. We missed the tourney last year and lost 10 of the final 15 this year. Whats it gonna take? Looks like IF we get TB the whole weight of the program is gonna be on his shoulders to get us to a final four. Glass and Crean are counting on it.

This couldn't be more wrong. We don't lose the core this year with a coaching change. We lose the core next year no matter what. I'd rather get a new coach in this season to have a good roster and a year to recruit to replace the core.

Next year we lose Yogi, Perea, NZ, and most likely Troy is gone. JBJR and Bryant/Maker could go one and done if they have good years. That could be 6 players to replace next season. You want to bring in a new coach and have to replace half the roster?

This year is the year.

Crean not only has to make a run but he needs to hit a homerun in recruiting for next years class. He can't be a perineal contender unless he pulls a UK type class. He was put on a one year notice and if he is smart he will bail for the first decent job he can get.

So true. Crean and Glass are hoping to land Bryant and or Maker and go all in on a run next year. Then, when we crash and burn at the end of the year again Crean leaves and leaves the cupboard bare.

Sure we may lose players if Crean leaves, but we'd be gaining a more knowledgeable coach, so the short term may not be pretty, but the long term far outweighs all that.

We *MIGHT* be gaining a more knowledgeable coach.

I want him gone like the rest of you, but there are worse options out there, and Indiana very well could end up with one given the decisions made recently. I'm not sure how much faith I have in the right next decision.

Who is your worst fear hire?

Anyone not named BS, BD, Archie. Those three will all be national champions. Love if IU hitched a ride on their journey.

I agree.  I am inclined to throw Marshall in there as well.  If we can't get one of those guys, then wait to move until we can.  The next move has to be the right move. and when it is there make it.  I'm probably in the minority in my thinking on this, but I'd rather make no move than the wrong move.

I'm okay with no move as long as it means we get someone like Stevens, preferably Stevens himself.  Otherwise Glass is just trying to feed us garbage about what his expectations are (BTW, why the hell is he just now setting those expectations?), because we have enough of a sample size to confidently say that Crean will never reach them.

I like Miller, but I'd like to see more from him before I'd be willing to call him for a job of this caliber because right now he really just has that one year and even Crean had that.

I understand your point on Miller, and honestly I need to do some more research on him.  I am to the point though of wanting to make sure we do our due diligence and not pass over the next big thing just because we don't want to risk it with an up and comer.

Do you think we'd be okay as a fan base with a coach whose lifetime record was 102-50 and two games under .500 last season?

I wish someone would just say he's the frickin coach next year. This does nothing besides keep speculation up. Glass supports him, but is he the coach next year?

Edit: AND, WHAT?! "Coach Crean's status should be based on his ability to achieve those goals going forward, not what he has or hasn't done in the past."

Sounds like another year of promise ultimately leading to disappointment.

Some coaches know how to prepare backups and rework the game plan going forward in order to succeed. Louisville is not as good of a team without Jones but you have to credit Pitino for adapting and giving his team the best opportunity to win. Crean/Glass use these type of incidents as back pocket excuses as to why the team has not met expectations. There are other coaches who lose good players during the season and still succeed, and there are coaches out there who will look to use the unfortunate situation as an excuse.

agree. It helps when you recruit good enough to have Quentin Snider riding the pine. Kid has been terrific. Crean has never recruited the bench to the level of the elite recruiters. And I bet Quentin Snider wouldn't have transferred if he finished the year on the bench either.
