IU Hoosier41

2015 #IUBB Offseason Thread

I would prefer him working on decision making. His handles could use work too. If Troy can average more 3PA while maintaining his percentage from last year we will really be able to spread the floor. Hell we might actually see Troy play on the wing with two "bigs" on the floor at the same time.

I would prefer Troy telling Crean that he won't play the 4 anymore.

Speaking of the four....Does anyone know how Holt is progressing with his mid-range shot as well as how many lbs he has put on due to hitting the weights during the last two months?  Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't mind starting Emmit even if he can't hit a 15 foot jump shot because Bryant can.

Id rather have Troy working on his ball handling than his 3pt shooting. We don't need him to shoot threes, we have plenty of players who can

I was joking, those are two area of strength for our team.

Problem with this is Troy isn't necessarily working on what Indiana needs anymore.  He's working on what he needs in order to be an NBA player, and he needs a jump shot to have any chance at all....which means he'll work on shooting 3's.

True, but doesn't mean it has to be 3's. The smarter move IMO would be to master your form on the15-18 foot jumper and then work your way out.

Troy would be dangerous if he could knock down the midrange.

Troy will need to be able to shoot to pull big guys away from the rim. If not teams like Purdue can sag off him and TB would be useless.

I would say Troy working on what he needs to make it to the NBA is not mutually exclusive from working on what he needs in order for IU to be successful.

I think Troy will be an unstoppable force if he can shoot close to 40% from 3. Doesn't mean that's all he'll do. It's just another weapon in his arsenal.

Also the report from the camp above doesn't say it is 3s he's even shooting

The midrange is a dying part of the game though, so it's going to be 3s.

Troy actually shot 46 percent from 3 this season but I get what you are saying

I agree to an extent, the 3 is certainly a huge focal point in today's game. Guards and wings that can shoot 3's certainly shoot it much more than the mid-range, but guys like Watford and VO took a lot of mid-range jumpers. Bigs shoot the 12-18 footer (depending on their range) a lot. The way IU plays there are a lot of opportunities for a guy like Troy to shoot the midrange.

Bigs in the NBA shoot the mid-range all the time too (Duncan, Aldridge, Griffin, Davis, etc.), and for us Troy plays the 4. A guy like Emmitt Holt would be extremely effective playing the 4 and living on 12-15ft jumpers.

Troy definitely has to work his way out to the 3 pt line, but that's much easier when you perfect your form closer in and work your way out. Helps build confidence as you work your way out.

The midrange is a dying part of the game though, so it's going to be 3s.

I seem to recall an insider saying  the analytic charts that Crean study's  show the mid range shot to be harder than a layup and not worth as much as the three.

That must be why JBJ,a player who showed a nice mid range game early gave up on it and started bull rushing the rim for that famous drive of his.

Those analytic charts go WAY back. I was just watching the Big Ten documentary on the 87 championship team and even Knight was talking about that same stat.

Absolutely agree with you. I get a lot of the concern around Troy focusing too much on his 3 point shooting. Last year he showed a much improved shot, but as JS mentioned, it was a very small sample size. I don't know that he ever became a perimeter threat during last season. His cutting was a highlight of his game last year, in my opinion. If he can establish himself as a threat with and without the ball in the post, and then also establish himself as a perimeter threat, he'll be absolutely incredible. I actually want to see him handle the ball more. We could have 3 ball handlers on the court at once with him.

As mentioned many other times before, I would hope we could then also run some better screens and have some better off the ball movement.

I'm very eager to see each player's progress, but Troy in particular has me excited. I personally see Troy as our utility player. Bryant and Holt are our rebounders and post defenders, Yogi is our primary ball handler and distributor who can score from anywhere on the floor, and we've got Rob and JBJ as our perimeter threats. Troy with his athleticism, improved shooting, improved handles, and intensity can really fill a role similar to Oladipo. He can be the guy who can fill in at almost any position, and just make plays. All of them need to improve defensively, but that's a whole other discussion.

People now days are way too caught up in what it says on a sheet of paper than what is going on in the game.

A wide open 12 footer is an easier shot than a highly contested layup. And if you've proven you can hit the 12 footer, a simple shot-fake might get you that wide open layup.

I think he could be a good point guard in the pros. But right now, he needs to build his core and pack some more muscle. His three is pretty accurate, if not in, usually. He need to get IU some tournament wins and that's when he can showcase his talent and shooting because the scouts are watching.
