Tom Crean to Alabama Rumor Thread

Recommended Posts

If we were to land Thomas Bryant and the core of our team returns, on talent alone we will be pushing 25 wins next season and likely be top 3-4 in the big ten and then Sweet 16/Elite 8. Would Glass fire Crean after that? I don't see it happening unfortunately

Elite 8? Crean could not get past the Sweet 16 with Cody, Vic, CWat, et al. No way he gets to the Elite 8 in the forseeable future at IU. We may get to the point where we have the talent (again), but with him at the helm, he'll find a way to hose it up.

Let's say he does do that though. Mike Davis got to the championship game so it is possible. IF he got to the elite 8, even if the cupboard is bare the next year, do you think he would be fired?

I have heard that coaches don't want it to look like they drove someone out. Well if we fire a guy that got to the E8, heck even if to the sweet sixteen given out last 2 years, I think we would struggle to make Creans firing not look like it was done to get Stevens.

If the end result is that we landed Stevens who cares what it looks like? I sure as heck don't at this point. That said......Stevens to IU really seems like nothing more than a pipe dream.

Stevens would. The IU administration would. IU doesn't want to look like an institution that doesn't stand by its coaches and Stevens doesn't want to be "that guy" for lack of a better term in coaching circles

Doesn't stand by its coaches? They have stood by far too long. Plus doesn't IU already have that reputation after what happened with Knight?

Bama, Tenn, ASU and Washington all have openings. In order to land their target, I think Bama will overpay for their next coach. ASU might have to overpay as well if they ever want to keep Zona in their sights. Tenn is in terrible shape, deleting of emails, who does that guy think he is Hillary?

Crean is at his best when he can come in and clean up a CBB mess. I think he'd do great at Tennessee

I don't think Tenn is getting hit by anything. They fired their coach bc of what he did at southern miss and was only at Tenn for a year. I think a school like that would be great for Crean. Football school, and for basketball they want to play an up and down style. Plus they can pay well.

Again not anyone in the athletic department saying he will be back.

Their argument though is that he is under contract for a few more years so why would they have to announce that he is coming back. I keep hearing the only way they will make any sort of announcement is if he is leaving. I think people just better get used to the idea of him staying for next year cause no matter what any of us want, all signs are pointing to him staying.

He isn't leaving. We will be stuck with Coach Crean for at least one more season. We will land some stud post player and play better defense and have a good team next year. Then when said team underachieves in the tourney and we watch Coach get outcoached again the administration will point to "progress" from the year prior to this one to justify keeping him further. It will be a never ending cycle...........yes I have officially become a pessimist lol

Then it'd better mean a homerun hire is waiting in the wings instead of the administration either not giving a crap or thinking Crean is anything more than mediocre at best.

Sadly, I don't think t he administration really cares. They have been terrible the past two years, but the schools is still making a lot of revenue off the basketball program and everything. A lot of these administrators have only heard about IU's days of glory and really have no real life connection to it so as long as the money is flowing, they probably don't care

Just reading about Rick Barnes at Texas and his base pay is 2.55 million through 2019, but his buyout is only 1.75 million.  What??? How in the heck did Fred Glass paint us into such a corner with Creans contract?  The disparity in the buyouts seems crazy.

I never understood Crean's buyout. I feel like Indiana held all of the power in those negotiations. You'd think there would have been better contingency clauses for us to get out of the contract with.
