Tom Crean to Alabama Rumor Thread

I just was reading Guytons timeline on twitter. Some guy has been telling him that Crean is a done deal for Depaul.

I have no clue.

Over on the 247 Bama site, they are arguing that they don't even want Crean. Some act like they would be happy with him but the majority don't want to "settle" for Crean. Wow, amazing.

I can't believe that.

There are 2 or 3 posters that are adamant about not wanting Crean. The others seem almost giddy about the possibility

idk, I read 4 or 5 Crean threads over there and that wasn't my take. Seemed to be a back and forth at minumum.

Either way I thought Crean would be a consensus homerun for them.

I noticed 2 threads about Crean so I might be missing posts from others. Interesting stuff going on, no less.

EDIT: the fact that there are 3 threads on Alabama's forum about Crean is even more interesting!

Cut them some slack, they're as much of a football school as it gets.  I'm surprised they even know they have a basketball team.

 

Tell them it was invented to keep football players in shape (that's what I've read, not sure how true but whatever), then maybe they'll start to give a crap.  Maybe.

I read an interesting blurb about the coaching vacancy at Alabama today. Of specific interest was this excerpt:

 

"Alabama disagreed and parted ways with Grant on Sunday. Grant arrived at Alabama with high expectations after his tenure at VCU that saw the Rams upset Duke in the NCAA Tournament in 2007, but those results at the mid-major level didn't carry over to the SEC.

 

Grant went 117-85 in six seasons at Alabama, reaching the NCAA Tournament once in 2012. The Crimson Tide brought in highly touted prospects during Grant’s tenure but struggled to translate recruiting successes into wins due to off-court issues, transfers or injuries".

The rumor is, Tom Crean will leave Indiana for the newly vacant Alabama coaching job. Yogi Ferrell will come with him. Ferrell is a junior, has graduated, and if he transfers he can play right away. There is also talk that Troy Williams will make the move south with Coach Crean.

Why would Crean give up $3 million a year? There is a few reasons.

Tom Izzo

We all know Alabama is a football school. Nick Saban is a god, and basketball is #2 or 3. Saban is involved in the hiring of the basketball coach, and Saban has a great relationship with Tom Izzo.

Izzo, the Michigan State basketball coach, was a mentor to Crean, and Crean was an assistant under him.

Crean’s Wife & Family

As Coach Crean said above, his wife isn’t happy. If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. Last week Crean’s son, Riley, was booed at his high school game in Bloomington with chants of “Tom Crean Sucks,” and more.

Classy move Indiana. Boo the son of your coach.

Indiana fans have been upset since the 2013 team was knocked out in the sweet 16 when the fans thought they should have won a title. Syracuse and Jim Boeheim beat those Hoosiers which featured a stacked roster including Cody Zeller and Victor Oladipo.

That same IU team won the Big Ten outright for the first time in 20 years, was ranked #1 in the country, and had a great season.

Once again, classy move Indiana.

Now will Crean leave for the SEC and Alabama? It seems at this point that this is what Hoosier Nation needs. These classless fans need to realize that Indiana isn’t a top destination for recruits. Crean was trying his best to rebuild this program, but these ans want it right now. Look at Kentucky, two years ago they were in the NIT.

There is so many examples I could point at, but I won’t. If Crean leaves it will put the program back even more. If he leaves for a football school like Alabama, it will demoralize the program and state for a long, long time.

If Crean doesn’t leave, it should be at least some sort of a wake up call to Hoosier nation that Indiana just isn’t what it use to be, and a lot of that is due to classless fans…

I hate the Kentucky argument.

They went to the NIT after an Elite Eight, 2 FFs, and a championship. And the following season were runner-ups. They aren't comparable down seasons.

 

I dont' believe for a second that Yogi and Troy would follow Crean. Especially Troy. What would they have to gain? Yogi needs a ton of exposure to make it to the NBA. Troy wants to go sooner than later.
