Potential fallout from coaching change

Recommended Posts

just making the tournament wouldn't be my indiana standard. From 1994-present look how many times we were bounced in the 1st or second round ( not pretty)

agree. Just pointing out the historical significance of missing 2 dances in a row at Indiana even in the non elite days. Mike Davis performed this feat, and Crean is trying to do it twice. First one is excused (partly) second one absolutely not. Couldn't of possibly had more momentum.

That stretch of losing in the first round multiple years in a row played a huge factor on Knight being let go.

lol. Good point. Maybe that's the problem.

Late 80's thru early 90's. 2002 was my favorite season as a student. I thought 2011-13 were great. Looked to be pointing towards elite.

I just want to be like Wisonsin, Michigan State, Ohio State has been over the past 15 years. Is that too much to ask for Indiana basketball?

No, but it continues to baffle me that some think it is. Crean was the right guy to clean up the mess, but those times are over and we cannot afford to plateau here. The program is headed in the right direction thanks to Crean, but he hasn't shown enough consistency to return this program to its status among the best in the country or even the best in the big 10. Years turn into decades quickly. We've already floundered for 20 years. I hope the administration gets this right. If it takes another year, fine. Just get it right.

also, here's a fun fact for ya.

1980-2003. IU missed NCAA tourney 1 time............. This is looking like back to back misses with elite talent in fold. Think about it!

and in the 1 miss we played for the nit title, barely losing to UCLA with Reggie Miller

no question I agree with everything you are saying. Looking at the big picture of our tourney results from the last 20 years it should show us we have a program problem not just a coaching problem and I would like it fixed soon so my 3 year old can enjoy iu basketball like I did when I was younger ( that's not too much to ask.lol)

No way it should take another year. The ball is in IUs court on this and any delay just creates a more toxic environment between the fans and the program. They want Stevens but he won't talk about it unless their is an opening available. So I'd expect movement to happen after we complete our season. Make a change and see what Stevens has to say. If he says no, then move on to the other guys you have already sent feelers out to and replied they would have interest. There is absolutely no reason Tom Crean is back next year. I couldn't care less if Bryant or Maker came or not, players aren't a valid reason to keep a coach who isn't good enough.....see Mike Davis.

Sampson had a talented roster and we were poised to have a great year in 07-08 and to return a ton in 08-09 rather than a 6-win roster. We all know what happened. And TC was poised for the same thing, but we had the unfortunate loss of 4 graduating seniors, and Cody and Vic going pro the same off season, that really put the kabash on the resurgence. We're a player away (Bryant?) from really being back in the conversation and headed the right way. I don't want a new coach for the sake of a new coach, I want a grand slam hire, if we're going to make a change.

I want something done this year too. But I also want the coaching search to be done properly. If suffering through one season with a lame duck coach is what it takes to get the best guy in here possible, I would be willing to suffer through that with the rest of you. I want a long term solution. I can't imagine why it couldn't be done this year, but I'm not the one with the information and possibilities laid out in front of me. Just get the right guy.

A bit off topic but how many players in Sampson's second year would've been academically ineligible? I thought there were several who weren't going to qualify

Mistakes were made with roster composition for sure. And maybe we could look past that if there wasn't such rigidity in the coaching style. What did Einstein say? "Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." He was pretty smart.

I've talked so much smack about Tom Crean, and I really feel bad for doing it. The bottom line is that Crean and IU is not a good marriage. I watch our offense and defense and nothing screams "good" to me. Hes a good guy though, I have met him several times.

Well said. A change would benefit everyone, IMO.

Crean will be a genius for taking a program that almost a decade ago had sanctions and by some divine intervention got them in the top 25, a truly super human coaching effort. Glass will give him an extension and I will run out of fuel for this battle and will be beaten into a submission of mediocrity.

Where have been the last 20 years beside the run in 2002 and a couple of sweet 16 appeances a couple years ago. Your fuel should of ran out a while ago. From the last 20 years of watching Iu, mediocrity is where we r at. If u would like to be depressed look at our tournament results since 1994. If I knew how to provide a link I would, if someone else could provide it. Thank you[/quote]

I absolutely agree with you on this. Some of my all time favorite IU players from the 2002 season but we all know it was a fluke. That for our program set us back even more after the knight fire. At the time yes, that was AWESOME! The last really good/consistent teams I remember is all of Alan Henderson's career at IU. Cried like a baby '92-93 season (I was 11) when we lost to Kansas (hated Rex Walters) in the elite 8. Watching IU basketball then was a "thing of beauty." Calbert, Alan, both Graham's, Nover, Bailey, Leary, Reynolds and B. Evans. That's when we were still elite guys. Year in year out we were EXPECTED to contend for B1G titles, top 10 in country, final four contenders. That's what I want us to be back to. I'm tired of talking about will 2 more wins get us in, if we lose to NU again he's gone, finishing 5-7 in B1G saves his job and would be exceeding expectations. That crap is way beyond old.

If we lose twice to NU in the same season then things will get VERY ugly VERY fast. Even uglier than after the Iowa game. I can't imagine him being back if (when?) it happens.

I know many people won't like this next analysis, but this program reminds me of an alcoholic.

Tom Crean is the family lush, constantly inebriated, constantly staggering about the place, blaming others for his condition and bitter than life hasn't gone the way he thought it should. Every day for him is a challenge, and every response to that challenge is to drink a bit more from the same bottle.

Fred Glass is the partner who's too embarrassed to admit Tom's condition publicly, but privately is beginning to question why he ever married the tool, fool, wonders how expensive divorce proceedings might be, and shops Amazon to find the best deal on really big, very dark sunglasses.

Some fans of course, are classic enablers. Too often, they're willing to endure the ramblings of a drunk because every now and then, things appear to be okay. They tell themselves, "Tom isn't all that drunk" and "Toms' really a nice guy", before adding "And that clappy thing he does is funny".

In the end, Tom is what he is. The program is what it is. Let's hope there are at least a few adults left at IU who're willing to take the keys away from Tom Crean before he drives the program back in a ditch.

So basically an intervention needs to be done!

It's not just Yogi though, our offense in general dribbles too much.

They do this because I haven't seen a hard cut and a screen since Pre-season. Nothing else to do but dribble and try to create.
