Post Game IU vs. Northwestern

Recommended Posts

I was at the game last night as well, wanted to wait to post until I calmed down a bit.  Let me just say this, watching Crean coach a game in person is so much worse than watching it on TV.  This is the first game I have seen since the Zeller/Oladipo squad, so man was I in for a treat.

This was like Tom Crean's Opus to me.  If I had to show a game to one person to describe everything I love/hate about him as a coach, I would just pop in the film from this game.  Everyone in the building knew that the teams couldn't keep up the shooting from the 1st half, so the adjustments needed to be made for that.  Let's just say that's where we were lacking.

Most things have been covered here, but I did want to say this.  I had to just laugh at the start of the 2nd half when Crean put in Robinson as the first sub off the bench.  I mean Zeislofts hair was basically on fire, and the first sub we bring in is a 2 guard that can not shoot the ball, only to have him guard the biggest guy on the floor.

There were also times in that 2nd half that I'm not sure any of our guys knew what defense we were playing.  I think on a few possessions when they started to make their run, we were just playing 1 guy in the lane and leaving the others to scramble around the perimeter to guard the shooters, this obviously didn't work and they got 3 or 4 wide open looks in a row.

I know this has been kind of a rambling post, but at least we saved all those timeouts so we could draw up that 7 point play at the end.

I, too, went to the game and waited until this morning to post. I haven't bothered to read the rest of this thread but the two things that baffled me the most was the amount of time Stan was getting on the court and why we stayed in our pitiful excuse for a zone defense when all it took was 2-3 passes to get a wide open look or layup. We made Olah look like a freaking all star when in reality EH and HMP should've been dominating him all night.

I was enjoying a nice three day business trip in sunny San Diego and came back to this crap.  At least I was in the Temecula wine country. It was bad enough that I got re-routed through Dallas.  I was able to watch the first half of the game in the airport only to find out that they laid an egg in the second half when I landed in Fort Wayne.  Thanks for ruining the week guys.

perfect example of game management and flow and notecard substitutions last night.  Zman should have started the 2nd half over Blackmon/Rob, or at least be first sub.  It would have REWARDED good play.  The team would have recognized it as good coaching and it would have raised the morale.  You can't have predetermined subs. Period.  And what the hell was with Burton out there at that time???  so random.  Stan was the worst he'd ever been and he was grabbing minutes.  I realize we missed a ton of shots but the coaching was disgusting and not just in the 2nd half.  I have my issues with the first half too.

Swat - we stayed in that zone defense, because this team has zero concept of what good help side defense is and they can't guard the ball to save their lives. Oh and their zone is too slow to react and it gives up wide open shots.

They should not shoot another shot in practice, until they can learn basic defensive fundamentals. Playing good defense is simple - know where you're supposed to be and out work the other team. It's awful and it has not gotten much better from the start of the season.

The decision to have Stan Robinson guard Olah was...

Horrendous.

Number one thing I complained about today. Can anyone try and justify Robinson doing a better job defensively than even April? His whole game is on the defensive side. He brings very little offensively. April can't bring size to make Olah work harder and set picks?

Honestly is it even worth dissecting where things went wrong? There were questionable coaching decisions made throughout the game. 8 points through 14 minutes is a worse drought than a lot of middle school teams go through. Defense is awful. Subs make no sense. Its really just more of the same.

I think you're being generous,I'm not sure the defense has gotten any better.

I think the players deserve just as much blame for this one. I saw James Blackmon Jr play a few times his senior year in high school and was so exited to see him play this year for the Hoosiers. He had some great games at the beginning of the year but come Big Ten time he seems to turn into Casper the friendly ghost after halftime. He is out on the court but does nothing and lacks a lot of passion and aggression. Sadly this years team has started to remind me of last years. Its more of Yogi vs the other team and last night Yogi looked like he didn't even care. I supported Crean at the beginning of the year and for most of the season. I think he is a good guy and a good coach but I just don't see it getting any better so we might as well find someone who can do a better job. I think a coaching change will also weed out some of the players who don't really need to be here anymore. IU is right back to where it was the last few years Davis was here.
