Up here in Portland Ind at a beagle club with no Wi-Fi or cable. I didn’t get to watch the trees play but glad they won. Hopefully I will see our team excel again in my lifetime.

It’s been a heck of a year for the Trees.  I’m sure people got tired of us talking about them last year and at the beginning of the year especially with how IU played   Let’s win this NIT championship.    Hopefully IU can give us joy next year but it was our Sycamores that gave us a ride this year.    Enjoy it I know I am because it might be a while until we see it again 

I know a LOT of people who got to watch this run, who only root for ISU, and who have eaten truckloads of crap while sticking with that program for 40+ years since Bird. Happy for all of them more than anything.

My first half assessment:

Boogie, Bailey, Edgecomb, Harper, and Queen.

Jackson looks like crap but the handle and speed undeniable.

Bought my wife and I Morgan Wallen tickets in October for the show Thursday night in Indy. If I ditched that to go watch the trees, how do we thing that goes over?

 

*also, my aunt and cousin are going and have seats by us. So she wouldn’t be alone. And loves my aunt, so maybe she wouldn’t realize I was gone?

Of course IU has done it many times in basketball and other sports.

Josh Schertz and his Sycamores in 3 years took all that Wabash Valley community enthusiasm to Hinkle Fieldhouse from hardly anything 3 years ago.

sidenote:  Indiana State has an excellent baseball program as well.

They said Thursday was sold out, wonder what a ticket will fetch? Everyone who has a ticket probably wants to go unless Utah or Georgia fans bought both night tickets!

Utah was 17/29 from 3 last night. My friend text me that and I had to look it up to believe it. Can you imagine shooting like that from 3 and still losing by double digits?

Yes, the announcers last night made reference that neither team was very good defensively. ISU was 108th in defensive metrics this year. As much fun as their offensive style is, Schertz is going to have to learn to coach better defense if he wants to move up the coaching ladder.

Their defense doesn’t worry me too much, at least not from a Shertz perspective.  
 

1. Eye test - every time I watched them I thought they at least competed hard and played fairly smart. Also you can only be so good on defense when a guy like Avila is your starting center.  
 

2. The nature of the statistics itself. They tend to rate high paced teams poorly on defense. They also don’t do a great job of comparing small major teams to high major teams, especially on defense where high major teams get a lot of mileage on superior athletes alone. For comparison, ISU was 4th in their conference. That’s not great but also not bad, again factoring in the high pace they push.  
 

I think it’s fair to keep an eye on that as Shertz rises up the coaching ranks, but it doesn’t jump out as a giant red flag, to me at least.

Scott Heady hired as the men's basketball coach at the University of Indianapolis. Heady is a 1986 UIndy grad, spent last seven seasons coaching at Marian University (168-56 record). Previously led Carmel to back-to-back state titles during a seven-year stretch.

UConn with flight issues per Matt Norlander's series of tweets -

UConn does not have a plane to fly to Arizona at the moment, Dan Hurley tells @CBSSports . Was supposed to take off at 6 ET, logistical/mechanical issues with the plane coming in from Kansas City forced significant delays. NCAA handles all travel for NCAAT

The issue for UConn (among many) is crew flying plane from KC would be over their FAA hours and can’t fly UConn immediately to Arizona. UConn’s earliest option is to get a smaller plane via Cincinnati that won’t take off until 12:45 am ET and not land until nearly 5 am ET/2 am PT

The plane from Cincinnati would require a fuel stop because it’s smaller. The Huskies are going to get to Arizona with hours to spare before Thursday media availability. They have tried for an hour working every charter possible, but nothing is available for the next five hours.

UConn remains in limbo and waiting on its earliest flight, but barring a stunner, it’s not getting out until we’ll after midnight and will have to stop somewhere to refuel. If it waits on the plane from Kansas City, per Hurley, that crew can’t fly until 10 am ET on Thursday.

Obviously a travel disaster for the No. 1 overall seed. All other teams are on the ground in Arizona. Alabama and Purdue got in yesterday, NC State just landed in the past hour.

Just in, UConn men's team landed in AZ at 3:12 PT (6:12 AM ET) this morning.  Only a couple of hours after when they were scheduled.  

Adjusted sleep schedule; ample time before media event this afternoon; other teams were already there... stress...

Just saw a comical tweet from the B1G -- bragging about being the only conference to send teams to the men's and women's basketball Final Four and the men's and women's Frozen Four (Final Four for hockey). 

But we're the only conference that actually can do so.

Most schools that play Division I hockey are in different conferences for other sports. For instance, Connecticut and Providence skate in Hockey East, but play most other sports in the Big East. Most Ivy league schools that play hockey do so in the ECAC. And many schools that play Division I hockey play Division II basketball.
