You can't control what the other coach or team is doing with time outs and bench warmers. You can control your team and how you react. If you want to speak your mind while walking through the handshake line then do so. None of that gives you the right to lay your hands on anyone. Those that did (Gard, Howard, UM and Wiscy players should all receive suspensions) We learn this **** in kindergarten.

That's what you remember from kindergarten?   I remember teaching Becky Pisker how to tie her shoes.  Then she kissed me on the cheek.  I guess I was a lover, not a fighter (back then anyway lol)

I always pushed the girls down at recess I liked. Probably should have gone your route, I never got kissed. But I do remember keeping my hands to myself being a big one.

I already made comments via twitter regarding the UM-Wisconsin post game situation.

My other comment is the following: I don't buy doing away with post game handshakes. I think that's putting a band-aid on the real issue the big ten has here. The big ten has allowed certain type of play on the court. In fact they/we pride them/ourselves on it. So much so that when you talk to anyone at your local pub in big ten country you typically complain about how 'soft' (For 21 years straight the big ten hasn't brought home a championship.) the rest of the county's NCAA basketball is. It was just a matter of time with the way the games are being officiated and how Wisconsin plays basketball that an altercation like this was going happen. We all know it. Maybe it's time to re-evaluate what kind of image the big ten wants regarding the black and blue, ground and pound, rough and tough, banging body conference it is?

Final comment: I don't know about your work environment but assault will get me pink slipped at my place of employment.

I think kindergarten lessons were very individualized.  While you and Aloha had to be taught not to fight, Ms Collins had to teach me not to trade favors for kisses.  You see, Becky wasn't the only one.  Donna and Laura were in the stable too.  That's probably where I went wrong.

Anyway, suspend them all!

Because if roles were reversed no one would be saying anything about Gard. It's always about race. Black people have been treated differently in this country for the last 200 years.

Actual basketball history paints a different story. The roles weren't reversed when John Chaney threatened to kill Calipari and tried to strangle him during a press conference. Very few if anyone called for Chaney to be fired, despite it reportedly being at least the 3rd time Chaney had attacked an opposing coach, in fact he was only suspended one game for that incident. IMO, anyone calling for Howard to be fired is more a product of the current time, of a society prone to regular overreaction and constant handwringing over anything or nothing, than anything racial.

In most cases, the person that reacts gets the worst of the punishment, with the one provoking the attack often experiencing little or no consequence. That pretty much seems to be the philosophy of Badgerball and they've made a living on that for years. Based on what I saw, I think Gard should get a couple games while I expect Howard will get 2-3 times that. Personally, I'd like to see Wisconsin get hammered as much as Michigan but I don't think that is likely.

I would also say our very own Bob Knight did crazy stuff for many years when people just turned a blind eye or said that is just Coach Knight disciplined kids. Or laugh off when he physically assaulted a police officer or many other cases.

If the postseason ban includes the BTT, I'm all for it. You see, I just bought tix to the BTT this weekend. I don't even know why. That was a really expensive way for me to watch us lose one game. But, if both Michigan and Wisconsin aren't eligible, it significantly increases our chances of avoiding the early #8/#9 game on Thursday morning, which tips at (I think) 10:30am my time. I really need to avoid having to get up and start driving at 4am on Thursday morning. You guys are focusing on the wrong issues here. #helpNashvilleHoosiernothavetodriveat4am #banMichiganandWisconsin

Watched and read throughout the day yesterday...this whole thing is just sad. These are men, on both sides, being paid millions of dollars to be leaders, mentors and role models to these young men. How can you preach rising above in difficult situations when you cant even do it your darn self.

I am in agreement with you that Gard should not have touched Howard, even if he was trying to explain himself after the comment Howard made. Gard should have let it go, kept it moving and also "remembered that" the next time they met. I'm sure there will also be discipline for Gard for the contact, and there should be.

I think the issue is that this isn't Howard's first time in a situation like this. Additionally, after the initial altercation, Howard didn't even punch Gard. Gard had backed away, Howard was being held back, and then took an enraged swing at a separate UW Assistant. Some have claimed that the assistant who was hit put his hands on a Michigan player unprovoked. If someone has an angle of that would love to see it, and if this occurred, that assistant also needs to face stiff discipline, and even termination if warranted.

Will also say...UW assistants running in to the skirmish talking crap, the UW assistant doing the "suck it" sign after the dust up to the UM side (WWE Style)...it is all so darn childish. If anyone on this board did even half of what occurred in our own workplaces, we would have our papers and be packing our cardboard boxes.

100%

I’m not defending Howard one bit but Gard deserves a lot of the blame as well.  He had to be dragged away by Wisconsin police before Howard threw his punch and stood at center court as UM was being escorted back to their locker rooms yapping at them.  Such a child.  Both of them.

Of course it can include the BTT. Heck, while we're at it, it can also include vacating all of their wins this entire season. This gives IU 3 less losses and takes us off the bubble

It started well before that as has been pointed out. Him swearing at Gard was an escalation no? So your walking out of class and someone swears at you and keeps walking, do you not ask “wtf was that about’”

words matter

and speaking of words matter, he and his big mouth have now led to 3 altercations with opposing coaches and schools in the last year. There is a pattern there.

I’m not defending Howard at all.  He said 4 words while walking past him not even locking eyes.  Blow by in sports especially basketball is not all that uncommon.  Zero excuse for putting your hands on someone.

I’m a college student and if someone said something to me while passing me (it has happened many times being a female) I don’t grab them by their shirt and escalate the situation.  Howard wasn’t even attacking Gard personally.  The blow by in itself was nothing until Gard wanted to make it into something by putting his hands on him.  Both men (I use the term men loosely here) look like children.  This isn’t Howard’s first time and Gard has just lost all respect.

I don’t know how many minorities are actually on this board. I’m one of them and I only speak about myself. For me personally even with graduate degrees and an MBA from UNC/IU and even being financially well off your aware of it 24/7. It’s not always right at ya like a KKK member out to get you but it’s constantly there. There really is no right or wrong, it’s just always there and something I always have to be aware of. When people here say “watch it be about race” I kind of roll my eyes a bit because I just don’t think people get it. As a minority, I always have to think about my surroundings and how to converse with people. It’s “watch it be about race” because as a minority your taught to always know your surroundings and to think about how to engage with people.  As a minority, I have to ask myself the way Gard grabbed Howard, would have he done that to Izzo or Painter? It’s not fair to maybe ask that question but because we live in that world we constantly have to ask that question. Just my point of view and I’m closed on this particular topic.

By the way I think both men are in the wrong here.

First off it was a bush-league timeout by Gard. Your up 15 who cares if they're pressing, their not going to score 15 in 15 seconds. Teach the walk-ons how to break the press in the next 5 minutes of practice.

Howard was going to blow by Gard, He said I'll remember that next year (so what), but then Gard puts his hands-on Howard. Howard clearly says twice Don't touch me. 1 game suspension for Gard right there.

Howard IMO should get a 3-5 game suspension for doing his part. Wisconsin assistants 1 game for their roles, maybe 2 for the one who his hands-on Michigan players to escalate all of this.

Agree 100%

I will add it looked like UW staff put their hands on a UM player.  Their are a lot of calls for Howard to be fired (I think that is way too extreme) but if a UW staffer did indeed put his hands on a UM player in any way we even if not threatening I think you can make the case that person should be fired.

I’m sorry but I completely disagree with your first point and could very easily make the same point using your exact logic. What do you gain by pressing down 15 with 25 seconds left? You’re not going to win and you’re not going to learn much pressing players at the end of the opposing team’s bench.

If you’re going to do it, don’t get pissed when the other team calls a timeout

Thank you that is what I was trying to say but you said it much better. It's sad that we have to think like this but it's the truth. I was blind to it for about 30 years, then married my wife and had my eyes opened.

I understand. In my year's coaching I just always thought it was BS to call a timeout up a lot.
