They played very tough while beating Virginia Tech and gave Maryland a good scare at Maryland. Part of the problem with this team is there's still plenty of the old Crean softness. We will have trouble with teams like Penn State that try to punch you in the mouth. It's the same reason I'm not looking forward to the upcoming Louisville game. Penn State has actually played some decent (not great) teams. Beat a very good Virginia Tech team at home and played Maryland tough on the road. Lost to two borderline NCAA teams as well (DePaul and Bradley). If Juwan plays I favor IU. If not it will be a dog fight. Quote

We will know a lot about this team by Saturday evening. Will be VERY pleased with two wins. If that's the case this team can win the B1G. Now they look like a middle of the road Big Ten Team. Joe Lunardi has IU as a 6 seed as of now...I'd LOVE to be a 6 seed but this team hasn't shown me that at all except for the Marquette game. Str8Hoosiers and thebigweave 2 Quote

I'm an Archie fan and think IU finally has the right guy, etc., but with that said if there's something I'm a little surprised by or maybe disappointed in to this point it's that the team/program hasn't really adopted his identity yet. I think we'd have a little more "dog" in us because of the type of player Archie was and the type of coach he seems to be, but I haven't really seen that happen yet. In his defense, the roster does have a lot of just naturally laid back guys, so maybe it's just the hand we're dealt right now. It's not easy to change someone's mentality as far as that goes, sometimes you are who you are. But, I was hoping to see a little more of Archie's identity by this point. WayneFleekHoosier Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 I don’t understand the softness of this team either. Smith is 6-7 230. Romeo is 6-6 215. Neither should ever get pushed around or moved off their spots. Smith has just struggled this year period. What would help him is doing the dirty work. I figured Archie would have instilled some fight and scrappiness into these guys. If Smith would just crash the boards, pick and roll for lobs, bang down low we’d be better. We have a bunch of soft, finesse playing cool Joes and dogs to go out and fight. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile appAgree. Where the dogs at? Juwan plays that way. Although because of foul troubles even he is limited on how much he can compete. Rob plays that way a little. McBob. Is that all? Combine that with guys that don’t shoot the 3 particularly well like soft teams should it’s a recipe for what we’ve seen. The season is early and each game adds to the story so I’m hoping we start to see some changes take course over the next few weeks. And he didn't come into his own until Archie got here. Maybe some of his canine qualities are held back by the constant foul trouble caused by being a dog. Zach is a "dog." He worked his way into Archie's starting lineup. We have so much dogness at practices that we've been shorthanded the entire year from practice injuries like concussions and contusions. Curtis Jones got pushed out for not being doglike to Archie's dogliking. Moore is an anti-dog, and doesn't see the floor. Romeo isn't soft. One of the stupidest things I've read. He absorbs a ton of contact, he just happens to anticipate it well to still get a shot and make it look good. Doesn't mean he's not getting hit. Justin... yeah he needs to go up stronger. Last year Juwan said that the team calls him "practice dunker" because he can dunk on everyone in practice, and then in games he lays it in (or tries to). In my estimation, we've got the dog factor dialed in. If we turn it up any more, we'll just get more injuries and fouls, which is about the last thing we can take. We're a missed tip-in from being 7-1 with a seriously compromised roster, and the fans are blaming everything from jerseys, to lack of a mascot, to McRobbie, to adidas as a sponsor. And now calling our motley crew of bandaged survivors "soft." We still compete on boards, even though the coaching philosophy is to send guys sprinting to the other end. Our defense is much improved. Our eFG% is excellent, in large part due to bodying in for high percentage shots. In fact, it's the non-dog parts of the game that are hurting us, like passing the ball to the opposing team, missing free throws, and 3pt shots. Edit: WayneFleek beat me to a few of the points. Maybe my typing is soft. hoosierdogg, thebigweave, Class of '66 Old Fart and 7 others 6 1 3 Quote

schoosier Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 Jake is a high energy player that should get some minutes. With the amount of bigs in this league, we need more than Davis to help us out underneath. I also don't think Juwan playing the 5 is gonna be good enough to beat the upper teams in the league this year. Unless you want to outrun everyone like we have seen from the previous regime.
