Just an eye opening play.  Of course we'll have to see how he does vs. D1 teams.

At the event I got to see him live at his PG threw an alley oop to him as he was coming baseline from the weak corner, al la Troy back in the day, that Wemby couldn’t have reached but he got his hand to the top of the square and that was a serious woah moment. He also likes blocking shots with 2 hands which I have a big weakness for.

You wrote about Prince's improved jump shot in another post. When you saw Karvala back then, was he rising and firing from 23 feet with pretty excellent rotation and release?

It looked damn good to me last night.

He was really good in the first game. Trent is clearly going to play and play a lot this year. The emergence of Karvala and two straight 'meh' outings from Harris changes the rotation equations a bit.

That's my nine in general order of how integral they will be in the game rotation after two exhibitions, though Harris will clearly get more than a 'ninth-best' look.

Mustaf is strong and athletic, and his defensive reactions seem good. I could easily see him being our best 'non-Sherrill' defender.

Yeah, Harris is giving me MM vibes. His lack of high-level athleticism is bad. I have no earthly idea how either one of those guys were so highly ranked in high school.

In all fairness to Harris, he is a 6'5" catch and shoot wing who could be a plus at times even without much athleticism. Mgbako is a 6'9" PF; a floor position that can put you in the league if you're also a catch and shoot threat, but with that comes more athleticism requirements.

Also in Harris' defense?

• He seems like a personable kid; he doesn't have those Mgbako dead eyes.
• Any assessment of Harris needs to be tempered by only having seen him in two games against very low level competition.
• Harris has yet to get into a major law enforcement kerfuffle at Taco Bell.

It’ll look good a lot of nights. 1 of his junior year HS games I watched after they offered kid made everything. But he’s not very consistent because he has stretches when lets it get on his palm and it gets a little knucklebally and a little flat. Doesn’t happen on free throws, just jumpers. The other thing is even when he receives a perfect pass dead in the pocket he drops the ball to almost his knees  as he’s going into the shot. Makes his release slow even when he’s in perfect shooting position. 
Long way of saying he can get better.

He’ll be case study for the Carr era.  We all see the limited athleticism… but did the staff see how he could be productive here and make the right call to bring him in?  We shall see…

Yeah. It's going to be interesting to see if the reason we were interested in Harris becomes obvious or if he left Duke as 9th man and ends up being basically 9th man on this IU team.

I'm not really sure what Carr or DDV could've possibly seen on tape that made them prioritize Harris, since so little tape of him at Duke really exists. That he was likely shown the door by Scheyer, who saw him in practice for 2 years, doesn't inspire confidence when he is paid to be one of our top 7 players. I think he's got a lot of athletic limitations, but hopefully he can make up for that with shooting and being a smart player.

I'm looking forward to the Butler exhibition where we'll get a look against more relevant competition.

Let's hope the entire team stays away from Taco Bell.  We don't need any kerfuffles or any unextend trips to the bathroom during practice or games.

What I have learned from the FISA basketball exhibition games about the Indiana team:

IU should be able to easily beat any NCAA Division II or Division I teams (rated below 325 on KenPom) *if we stay healthy.

Burton and Sherell are going to be fun and productive this season.*

Watch Karvala pull a rabbit out of a hat.  The freshmen are full of potential.

IU needs eligible bigs in uniform.

There are still lots and lots of unknowns...like defensive efficiency and etc.  Until we see IU play some good teams, there will be unknowns.  

Offensively, we have better weapons that last year...they can shoot and move against little competition.

Coach is beginning to talk to the refs!  Whoa!

Getting to see IU basketball mid-summer is a treat. We have moved the unknown team into the ahhh column.

If there are minimal locker-room issues, no early morning visits to Taco Bell, no car chases, or no missing starters...then we will dance.
