Pipe dream, of course. He may be fine starting in the G-league, but you’d think he’d at least consider trying to get $2mil for another year in college.

If Cuban or somebody was going to cough up the money in such a scenario, I would give the feelings of Darren Harris almost zero consideration. Yigi likely didn’t come here to fight for minutes with Alexis but that’s exactly what will happen if joins. They had near identical per 40 numbers last year, but Alexis was much more efficient, did it in a tougher conference, and didn’t get the benefit of consistent starters minutes until half way through the season.

Agreed- now that players are getting paid I could could not care less about their feelings. Take the money and shut-up.

I have no clue how realistic Wilkerson's returning is, but you HAVE to do that if possible, no matter what promises you made to other guys.

I see Alexis as a solid starting B1G center. He would be an amazing "back-up" though, basically splitting the playing time in the post with Samet and occassionally Sherrell. Either of those moves raises IU's ceiling & floor. Both? Top 10ish team.

Rabby with an ominous Keyshawn Hall update tonight

A Thursday Indiana basketball recruiting tidbit …

I get the vibe Auburn transfer Keyshawn Hall, a 6-foot-7 forward with four years of college experience, is aiming to have Indiana in his main group.

if IU is included, that should be viewed with caution as things stand at the moment.

Per reports, Hall has won at least one court battle for a fifth year, but he turned 23 in April, so there is still some conversation about his eligibility.

he hasn’t elaborated any further

Interesting.  It sounds like the staff is pushing to fill the last spot for sure.  I hope we can get Sam eligible.

Really good player but I don’t like that fit even a little bit. But it ain’t my team. If DDV wants to go there and thinks he has a plan to make those pieces fit, ok. Weird as this sounds, Hall reminds me of Kelsey Mitchell for the Fever in that they’re both so offensively minded that if they go 4-5 possessions without getting fed the next touch is going up whether it’s a good look or not. That doesn’t feel like the need here.

Would make zero sense to me to add Hall and not Alexis. Therefore I choose to believe it's not happening. Weird to me that Bailey is part of a lawsuit for another year but Sam is not yet, to my knowledge

Hall is an immense talent despite some of his baggage and fits a huge position of need. Sisley is really the only 4 on the roster with any kind of game experience and it's limited at that. Alexis is a take if Hall is a no go, but if the goal is to stack your roster with the most talent possible, Hall is the guy you want.

I disagree thoroughly with this That's like me expressing concerns to my boss and him telling me to shut up because I'm getting paid. Just because they're getting paid doesn't mean they're not human

Part of a successful team is challenging the players and having extremely high standards, but not making them feel like they're getting sh!t on.

Totally agree with this.

At the same time, D1 college basketball players need to be okay with competing for minutes, especially when they are new to a program.

If you have an opportunity to upgrade the roster, how the potential 7th man feels about that shouldn't stop you from doing so IMO. That said, it's basically a moot point since Wilkerson certainly won't be back.

Except I don't have any authority or control over them. I'm not their boss and not responsible for their job satisfaction. I am an on-looker that wants them to perform for my entertainment. They are professionals now, working on a 1 year contract. Do I care about them as human beings? Eh, I guess, at least I care about them more than I do the employees at my local DMV. But if the team can be improved (more wins) at the cost of one othem personally? I am all for crushing the individuals hopes and dreams and casting them into the gutter like garbage with-out a second thought, for the fleeting intangible benefit it gives me.

Is that how DeVries will treat his players? Probably not, but these aren't innocent college kids playing for the glory of old IU. They are mercenaries that will come & go and mostly be forgotten. I hate it, but that is the reality now, in the current system it's transactional. With annual roster churn and players getting paid come much higher expectations and much less fan patience (tolerance, loyalty?) At least in my increasingly cynical opinon.

That's some quality message-boarding right there, is what that is.

I try and remind myself that it is kind of a fluke that IU rebuilt in Woodys yr 4, then completely rebuilt for DDV 1, and then again for DDV 2.

Hopefully we’ll build and give some continuity going forward. IU basketball as a brand doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence, though.

Can anyone explain what would potentially make Sam Alexis eligible for another season? The rumors have floated around lately but I haven't seen an explanation of what circumstances need to fall in place.

The 5 for 5 rule was recently passed by the NCAA. The gist of it is that there will be no more redshirts (medical included) and all players can now play for 5 continuous years. The 5 year clock starts when they enroll or at the start of the academic year after they turn 19, whichever comes first.

The HS class of 2022, which Sam Alexis was part of, was not included in the 5 for 5 rule. So, all the classes prior to them that had redshirts/covid years got 5 years (sometimes more) and the classes after them would all get 5 years. Now we're seeing players from that class filing suits to get another year of eligibility.

I think Sam would need to join a suit to get another year of eligibility. Wilkerson would not be eligible because he played 1 year of JUCO, 3 at SHSU, and 1 at IU, so he already has played 5 years.

Excellent explanation. Thank you. Sounds unlikely this will work out but one can dream.

Happy to shed some light. It may be more likely than it seems, some players (like Keyshawn Hall) have apparently been granted another year of eligibility already. I am not a lawyer, not sure if there's a chance of that getting reversed.

Does seem odd that Alexis isn't part of any lawsuits yet (to my knowledge) but the fact they took him to Peru for the FISU games makes me think IU believes they have a good chance to add him. We shall see!

Just to piggy back off this good explanation…

The rule used to be 4 years of eligibility in 5 years, allowing for a redshirt year. Or maybe a medical redshirt. Or maybe 2 medical redshirts depending on timing, etc… So the new rule is good in that it takes the ambiguity out of it. It kind of chains it to the student-athlete concept because it seems half of regular students take 5 years now anyways. It was just a sloppy roll out because they excluded this one particular class.

To get a temp. injunction like these kids are getting you basically have to show two things in a preliminary hearing: 1) that there will be irreparable harm, and 2) a likelihood to succeed on the merits of the claim.  The first is a no-brainer for the athlete plaintiffs, because there’s no way to get a year of eligibility back if you don’t get the injunction. That latter element is basically being ignored or pro-forma stamped by courts for various reasons that likely include: the ncaa isn’t politically popular, the ncaa is a perpetual loser, the ncaa never sees these cases through and tries to win the case on the merits once the injunction is given, the players have friendly jurisdictions (e.g. an IU grad judge in Monroe county), etc…

So the real question is: if IU has this grand plan to bring Alexis back, where the heck is his case??
